Regnum Aetern: Dual Rebirth

Chapter 189: Unexpected problems

Sitting in the library, Adrian let out a tired sigh.

’What a headache.’

Evangeline had thrown a huge tantrum even after he offered her an alternative. According to her, she didn’t want to risk losing her ’magical pet’ after emotionally bonding with it.

In the end, she attempted contract summoning several more times, and none of them bore any fruit.

It was strange that absolutely no Eternarch was answering her call, but it wasn’t like he could do anything about it.

Her tantrum had continued for several hours. In the end, he had to promise her that he would do something, and that was what had calmed her down.

Adrian glanced at his bandaged right arm.

’Not much time left before it’s complete.’

He should’ve been done with recreating the engraving a while ago. But there were other things he had been working on for a while now. He had to create the spells Evangeline had asked for. Moreover, he had gotten another idea after Evangeline gave him the idea of using Alisardarc as a quick long-distance communication tool.

He had never thought much about Alisardarc ever since he had made a contract with the bird. Well, it was likely because Adrian had needed tangible strength at the time, but the bird couldn’t provide it.

But that was not to say that Alisardarc was useless; it was just that Adrian had never thought much about the best way to utilize his Eternarch.

But now that he had come to the realization, Adrian was determined to learn from his mistakes and utilize the black bird in the best possible ways. There was already an idea he was going to be working on starting today.

’If this works, then it will fix one of my biggest weaknesses.’

And then there was the whole ordeal with the academy’s curriculum change.

Frankly, he was too busy to think about it, so he had told Evangeline to figure things out and tell him.

"Ugh, there are just so many problems..."

Just then, Alisardarc suddenly entered through the window and landed on his shoulder.

[Feeble One, your so-called sister is looking for you. Apparently, she has something to report.]

’Hmm? Did some problem arise?’

Adrian quickly stood up from the chair and left the library. Soon, he arrived at his dorm room. Nelliel was standing by the door. Judging by her expression, whatever she had to report to him was most likely not something good.

They both entered his room. Adrian sat on a chair as she locked the door.

"You have something to report?" Adrian looked at her. "I am guessing that it’s not something good."

Nelliel nodded.

"It isn’t good news. Something very big has happened in the empire. The biggest underworld organization, Nebulous Veil, destroyed a viscount family last night, not leaving even a single family member alive. The empire has declared them a terrorist organization. According to the sources, the emperor plans to crack down on all underworld organizations because of this in the name of regulation."

Adrian frowned.

"Why did they suddenly destroy a noble family? They must know that the empire wouldn’t leave them alone after something like that."

"That’s the thing." Nelliel pressed her temples. "Nobody saw this coming. They didn’t have a grudge against that Viscount or his family either. Even the empire can’t find the reason behind this attack."

’Now that’s another problem I’ll have to deal with.’

Why were all sorts of problems popping up at the same time?

Nelliel leaned in and asked with a concerned face.

"Brother, what do we do now? I think the best thing would be to abandon the organization and flee before the empire gets to us."

Indeed, it would really be the best option to choose. After all, as long as the cult was intact, he could create another such organization once again.

’But...’

It would also mean that all the progress he had made in that time would be lost.

Adrian was someone who hated taking risks. To him, nothing was worse than uncertainty. But having reached this point, he had learned that to achieve something, taking risks was sometimes very necessary.

If he hadn’t taken the risk of attacking the Prophet when he had gotten the opportunity, then maybe he would still be living in the cult as a priest.

Taking a deep breath, Adrian calmly asked.

"How much money has the organization made?"

Nelliel looked confused by his question but soon answered.

"I don’t have a fixed number, but I would say it’s a bit more than a million lux after subtracting the funds that you gave at the start."

’Hmm... It’s not as much as it needs to be, but this should still be enough.’

Adrian pulled a sheet of paper from the bundle on the table and began writing on it. After he was done, he handed the paper to Nelliel.

"It is time to move to the next phase of the plan. I have written all the details on that page. Follow them exactly as written."

Nelliel scanned the page and began reading its contents. But the more she read, the more her eyes widened. Her expression made it look as though she couldn’t believe what she was reading.

She turned her eyes to him and asked in a tense voice.

"Brother... is this even possible? No, even if it is possible, it’s too dangerous. One wrong move and we would practically be revealing our existence to the Empire. Brother, I have listened to all your orders and have never doubted you, but please reconsider this. I think you’re being too ambitious."

Adrian narrowed his eyes.

’Did I push things too far?’

It was not good for the cult members to doubt him, since that would erode his power. Still, he couldn’t back down this time.

He looked into Nelliel’s eyes and spoke in a firm tone.

"Nelliel, I have come to learn that taking risks is sometimes very important. And I was able to learn this fact all thanks to Lord Prophet. You are right; this is extremely risky, but if we succeed, then the benefits will be enormous. I will not force my decision on you or the rest of the cult. Whether you want to trust me or not is your choice."

"Brother..." She lowered her head. "I did not doubt you. Sorry if it came off that way. I... will deliver this page to Uncle Rolf."

She slowly turned away and walked towards the door. But just then, Adrian called out to her.

"Nelliel, wait. I have something more to tell you."

As she turned around, he whispered.

"Alisardarc."

As the whisper left his mouth, mana condensed above his shoulder and materialized into a black bird.

Nelliel tilted her head.

"An Eternarch? Brother, I didn’t know you had formed a contract with one."

He turned to the bird and commanded.

"Make one more incarnation."

The black bird divided itself, creating another identical bird.

"There is one around Rolf too." Adrian turned to Nelliel. "Take one of these birds with you. If you want to talk to Rolf, then simply speak to this bird, and it will convey your words to him."

Adrian could now maintain four of Alisardarc’s incarnations indefinitely. One was monitoring Rolf, and three were left. So he decided to give one to Nelliel.
