Evangeline walked through one of the academic buildings where the duke’s daughter was supposed to be attending a lecture. The Phase Three commoner boy, Xion, was walking alongside her.
When she told him about her current predicament, he had readily offered to help her.
Xion turned to her and spoke in a friendly tone.
"Miss Evangeline, I did offer to help, but I don’t think I would be able to do much to help you convince the duke’s daughter. So, how about this? You will convince her, and I will convince your fiancé. Does this sound good?"
"Well, it’s not like I have other options." She sighed. "I should be thankful that you are helping me at all, Xion."
"Oh, no, not at all." Xion shook his head. "We are teammates now, so it is only right that I help you."
After searching a bit more, they finally found Saria sitting in a lecture hall, quietly listening to the lecture. They waited by the door until the lecture came to an end and the cadets inside started leaving.
Just as the duke’s daughter left the lecture hall, Evangeline walked up to her from behind.
"Um, hello. Do you remember me?"
The girl turned around with a frown. She had her eyes closed, but Evangeline felt as though the duke’s daughter was staring at her.
As Evangeline began feeling uncomfortable under the weight of Saria’s nonexistent stare, she suddenly heard her mildly irritated voice.
"What do you want?"
She seemed to be in a bad mood, causing Evangeline to hesitate briefly. But she somehow mustered up the courage and asked.
"I just wanted to ask if you had joined someone’s team for this month’s assignment mission..."
"Are you dumb?" The duke’s daughter furrowed her brow. "I am a Phase Three and can take on the mission alone, so why the hell would I team up with a bunch of weaklings?"
’Well... she is right. Thought the way she put it was kinda trashy.’
Evangeline smiled and asked politely.
"Oh, is that so? I am planning to take on a mission in the island exploration category. But to do that, all four of us Phase Three cadets would have to form a team. So I was hoping that you—"
"No way in hell." Saria cut her off with a blunt answer. "I have no interest in whatever nonsense you are trying to do, so don’t bother me."
Saying that, she turned away and started walking off. But Evangeline hurriedly grabbed her hand.
"Wait! Please don’t say no like that; it’s very important to me!"
But the moment she finished speaking, Evangeline’s vision tilted, and her back was slammed against the floor.
"Guh-!"
It took her a few moments to understand what had actually happened. Saria had suddenly kicked her leg, making her lose balance, and then pushed her down to the ground with her palm. It had all happened so quickly that Evangeline wasn’t able to react.
The sharp voice of the duke’s daughter pierced her moments later.
"How dare you touch me? Know your place."
Xion came forward and helped her to her feet moments later.
Evangeline wore a deep frown as she stared at Saria.
’Isn’t she being too rude?’
It was one thing to reject her request, but her behavior was downright hostile. Evangeline couldn’t understand how a girl from a noble family could have such a foul mouth and rude attitude.
"Hey, aren’t you being too much? Do you know nothing besides fighting? You are a musclehead, aren’t you? No wonder you don’t know basic manners, let alone noble etiquette."
Her tone sounded a bit sharp even to her.
Evangeline suddenly felt a faint pressure pressing down on her shoulders as the girl’s presence grew in size. It was clear that Saria was trying to intimidate her. Evangeline released her own mana, pushing back the girl’s presence.
Saria suddenly pushed her hand forward, aimed at her throat. It was swift, and Evangeline was once again unable to react in time. But Xion grabbed Saria’s hand by the wrist, holding it in place.
He had an amicable smile on his face, but his words felt sharp as he spoke.
"I think that’s quite enough. If you are resorting to violence, then know that you are alone and there are two of us."
The duke’s daughter tried to free her hand, but Xion’s grip seemed to be rather firm, not budging even a bit.
But...
"Xion," Evangeline broke them apart and turned to him. "Let me handle this. This was the arrangement from the start."
The boy blinked a few times but then nodded and stepped back.
Evangeline turned her attention back to Saria and crossed her arms.
"You have no manners, no brains, or anything else besides your strength. That does make you a musclehead. I was just talking, and you attacked me instead of using your mouth. What more proof is even needed?"
She could see a vein pop on the girl’s forehead, but she seemed to be trying her best to restrain herself.
She took a step closer, coming to stand right in front of Evangeline in an intimidating gesture.
"Speak for yourself. You are nothing but a pig who only knows how to stuff your mouth. What do I have besides strength? I have status, I have experience, I have achievements. You question my intelligence as though you are better than me. But aren’t you inferior to me in every way?"
The girl brought her face closer.
"Tell me, what do you have?"
Evangeline opened her mouth but paused just as she was about to speak.
She wanted to say that she had eyes. But...
’That feels like an extremely rude and insensitive thing to say.’
Her mind began searching for a different answer. Suddenly her thoughts settled on a particular six-year-old memory.
Evangeline’s lips unconsciously curled up into a smile.
’What do I have, you ask?’
She pushed her hand forward in an exaggerated gesture, showing off the engagement ring on her finger, and spoke in a strangely theatrical tone.
"I have a black dragon in my right hand!"
She might not be able to compare to Saria, but Saria couldn’t compare to Adrian either. And just as she had expected, the duke’s daughter had no counter.
"..."
’Why so quiet now, rude girl? Got nothing to say?’
She turned to Xion.
’You see this? This is what...—Uh?’
"..."
Xion was looking at her strangely.
’...What? Why is he looking at me like that?’
Just then, she heard the duke’s daughter let out a tired sigh.
"Ugh, why am I wasting my energy with a clown? I could’ve utilized it better."
And so she turned around and started walking away at an unhurried pace.
Evangeline hurriedly reached out towards her hand but paused as the girl’s reaction moments ago flashed through her mind.
In the end, she couldn’t think of a way to convince her to join the team, so she switched her brain off and blabbered without thinking.
"I finally get it now. You don’t wanna join my team because you’re too scared to take on the island exploration mission."
The duke’s daughter stopped in her tracks and turned around.
"The hell are you on about—?"
"Trying to make excuses? I knew it! You really are scared."
"..."
"If you aren’t scared, then I dare you to join my team and take on the island exploration mission with us."
Evangeline could see how desperately Saria was trying to hold herself back. But as tension rose, Saria suddenly let out a sigh.
"Fine then, I will play along. You can count me as part of your team. I will show you the difference between us during the mission."
