Regnum Aetern: Dual Rebirth

Chapter 193: Evangeline’s team recruitment mission (2)

Fragment relics were of three categories.

First were Grade One fragment relics. Their function was not too powerful. They didn’t possess a mana pool of their own either. The only way to activate their function was by channeling your own mana into them.

After that came the Grade Two fragment relics. After fifty to a hundred years, a Grade One fragment relic would evolve and become a Grade Two fragment relic. Their function would either strengthen or change entirely, and the fragment relic would come to possess its own mana pool. This meant that even a person with no mana could use them without any problems.

Even among Grade Two fragment relics, the gap in their strength was extremely vast depending on the relic’s age.

And then came the Grade Three fragment relics. After hundreds of years, a Grade Two fragment relic might eventually develop a spirit. This causes their mana pool to grow absurdly large. Large enough that the mana pool of an individual standing on the pinnacle of the mana ladder would be nothing in comparison.

Grade Three fragment relics had reality-altering powers, being capable of reshaping the world itself. More than that, Grade Three fragment relics had a will of their own because they had a spirit inhabiting them. In a way, they could no longer be classified as objects but as living beings.

Xion glanced at the dull grey coin in his hand.

This was the Coin of Time.

Turning back time was impossible, even if one possessed the Time element. That was because the act of turning back time was something that affected the entire world. And no matter how strong one became, they would never possess enough mana to cast a spell that could affect the entire world.

But it was possible with a fragment relic like the Coin of Time.

Its function allowed one to save a particular point in time as a checkpoint. The user could consume the coin’s mana to turn back time and regress to the saved point. And since the coin returned to the time before its mana was consumed, this time reversal could be used infinitely.

The only limitation was that the regression wouldn’t happen if the saved point in time was more than one day ago.

This was the might of a Grade Three fragment relic.

’And you’re telling me that there are two more of these in the academy city? And I have come across them too?’

Rolling the coin between his fingers, Xion let out a frustrated sigh.

’Kiryuzor, is there really no way for you to spot those two fragment relics?’

[As I said, only another fragment relic would be able to sense their accurate location.]

He stared at the dull grey coin.

’If only the spirit of this coin wasn’t dormant...’

The spirit of the Coin of Time had been dormant for as long as Xion could remember. It was a blessing for him, since this allowed him to abuse the coin’s power without anything limiting him. But for the first time, he was wishing for the spirit to wake up.

’It seems I’ll need to be a bit more careful from now on. I can’t use the coin carelessly. Well, so much for having fun...’

But just as he thought that, a girl’s voice came from behind him. A voice that sounded faintly familiar.

"I finally found you!"

Xion slowly turned around, only to find a familiar face standing behind him, panting.

It was Evangeline Florivelle, one of the targets he was supposed to gather information on.

He tilted his head.

’She was looking for me? But why, though?’

But soon, he stretched his lips into an amicable smile and spoke in a friendly tone.

"Oh, hello there. If I am not mistaken, you are Evangeline Florivelle, correct?"

She blinked.

"You remember me? That’s... unexpected..."

"No, not at all." Xion shook his head. "Having witnessed your performance in the practical exam as well as the ranking duels, I would say you have left a lasting impression on most of the people who ‌watched you."

The girl scratched the back of her head as she tried her best to hold back her smile.

"Is that so...? Thank you."

Xion narrowed his eyes.

’So she is weak to praise, huh? What an easy girl. I wonder if I can extract more information from her.’

But the moment he thought that, a deep voice rang in his mind.

[You better not push it too far.]

’You don’t have to tell me,’ Xion grumbled. ’I’m not stupid.’

Then he asked the girl.

"You said that you were looking for me. Could you tell me why?"

The girl paused and mulled over her words for a while before eventually speaking.

"I’m here to invite you to my team, um, Xion. I plan to form a team that includes all four of us Phase Three cadets so that we can take on a mission from the island exploration category. Please join my team, Xion."

He furrowed his brow.

"Island exploration mission? But why do you want to take on that mission? I believe that the academy gives the same score regardless of the category of mission you complete."

Setting other things aside, there was no reason for selecting the island exploration category over the other two. If there were a merit, it was that they would be able to keep whatever they found during their mission.

But finding something valuable on an unexplored island was no different from treasure hunting without a map. It was extremely improbable.

’I don’t think that’s her reason, though.’

The girl fidgeted with a troubled look on her face. It was clear that she was uncomfortable answering his question.

’Hmm...’

She was unwilling to share her reason with him yet expected him to join her team anyway. There was no way anyone would agree to join her team.

Xion smiled internally.

’Anyone but me, of course.’

Since the team would include all four Phase Three cadets, it would mean that both she and Adrian Caelis Ravenshade would be present. Both of them were her targets, and it was an incredible opportunity to gather more information about them.

There was no way he would let go of such an opportunity.

’Besides, I was getting really bored here, and this sounds like a lot of fun.’

Looking at the girl, Xion widened his smile.

"Fine, I agree to join your team."

***

Evangeline blinked.

’...Did I hear it wrong?’

"Um, could you repeat that? I think I misheard you."

The boy, Xion, nodded.

"Of course. I said that I agree to join your team. Island exploration sounds rather fun, so count me in."

’Really? But wasn’t that... too easy?’

It felt as though they had skipped a few steps. Evangeline furrowed her brow as she contemplated. But her eyes suddenly widened as a thought came to her mind.

’Don’t tell me... does he also want to go on a sea adventure like me?’

That was possible...

But whatever the reason, she had somehow convinced one of the three people to join her team.

Now, only two were left. Adrian and the daughter of House Mythrien. And since she couldn’t yet think of a way to convince Adrian, her next target was the duke’s daughter.
