Hearing his question, Evangeline nodded confidently.
"Of course, it was done ages ago. You are the one who is late, Adi."
Saying that, she rushed off without any explanation.
As Adrian waited in silence, Evangeline returned after a short while, carrying a sword in her hand. It was the same sword he had given her to turn into a magitool weapon.
The sword itself wasn’t anything special, just the same one that was given to all the knights of House Rvenshade. Adrian had borrowed this one from Sir Joran a while ago, but he forgot to return it before leaving for the imperial capital.
Evangeline handed him the sword with a smile.
"Here. I created it as you requested. Test it out and tell me how it is."
He held the sword in his hand and ran his finger along its blade.
’Hmm...’
Channeling his mana, he covered the sword’s blade with it. And the moment he did, that layer of mana turned into a layer of blue lightning. The metal blade was covered in sparks.
Adrian did a few tests, and it turned out that the amount of lightning was directly proportional to the mana he used. In simple terms, instead of creating lightning by using his mana, the sword was simply converting his mana into lightning.
It sounded like the same thing, but in the latter case, Adrian simply wouldn’t be able to perform the third level of his infusion art since his mana would be turned into lightning before he could infuse it with his space element.
He sighed.
’Looks like I will need another sword to use as a spare.’
"It’s good." He turned to Evangeline. "You seemed to have added a touch of your creativity instead of just creating what I asked for. But the result seems to have turned out great, so I am thankful."
But Evangeline shook her head.
"You haven’t discovered its full potential yet. Try using the first level of your infusion art, the one where you shoot an energy blade by swinging your sword."
Adrian furrowed his brow.
’There is more? Let’s see...’
Raising his sword, he swung it down and released a burst of mana in the middle of the swing. It should’ve shot a mana blade, but instead, it shot an energy blade made of lightning.
Adrian paused as he saw that. Moments later, he turned to Evangeline.
"Is this the reason you made the sword this way?"
She nodded while smiling.
"Of course. I had noticed that you don’t use the first level much after reaching Phase Three. I guessed that it was probably because the first level wasn’t all that strong for your current strength."
Indeed. The energy blade didn’t have much destructive power unless a lot of mana was used. Most opponents could either just dodge or block it, and they wouldn’t suffer much damage even if they got hit by it. In the end, the first level had just become a waste of mana at his current strength.
"So that is why I made your sword this way. Since the energy blade that you shoot is now made of lightning, it’s more swift, more destructive, and also has a brief stun effect. What do you think? Aren’t I the best?"
Adrian observed the sword in his hand.
’Looks like she put a lot of thought into this. That’s unexpected.’
"Yes, that does make it more useful than I initially thought." He nodded. "Thank you for your efforts."
Hearing his praise, Evangeline giggled.
"Hehe."
Adrian’s mind was already thinking of the possible ways he could use the sword. But his chain of thought was broken as Evangeline tapped on his shoulder.
"Adi, are you done with what you were doing in the library?"
He nodded, causing her lips to curl up into a smile as she said in an excited tone.
"Then it’s time to go on the sea adventure—I mean the mission!"
Adrian sighed.
"Yeah, sure. Gather the other two. We should discuss it with them since we are now a team."
And so, Evangeline told him to wait and rushed off once again, likely to bring the other two. And she returned with them after some time.
All four of them sat on the ground, forming a circle.
Adrian was the first to speak.
"I am done with what I was doing. So, since I am no longer busy, I believe it is finally time that we go select a mission."
The commoner boy, Xion, smiled amicably.
"Ah, you don’t need to worry about that. We have already selected a mission; all that’s left is to leave to complete it."
Adrian furrowed his brow.
’So they didn’t even feel the need to discuss it with me before they selected a mission?’
"Could you share the details of the mission with me?"
Xion nodded.
"Of course. Miss Evangeline was interested in something like uncovering traces of unknown old civilizations, so we picked an unexplored island that has a high chance of having once been a place inhabited by people. It is somewhat far from the continent, so the journey might take a bit long. The mission itself is simple. We have to write a report of what we find on that island after we return."
Adrian nodded along.
"I see."
’Well, that sounds simple enough. But considering that being Phase Five is recommended for this mission, there is no way it is simple.’
Since the islands were completely unexplored and untouched, nobody knew what existed there. Being a Phase Five was not recommended so that they could deal with some unknown beast should they encounter one. It was recommended so that they would be able to escape with their lives if they accidentally came across some ancient abomination.
Moreover, the seas themselves were a huge challenge, since countless powerful beasts and monsters dwelled in their depths.
Adrian turned to Evangeline.
"What about the transportation? How are we going to get to the island? The academy is going to take care of that, right?"
After all, this mission category was open to everyone. So how would cadets from commoner backgrounds afford such a journey? They would likely have to book an entire ship since they would need to reach a specific destination.
But Evangeline shook her head.
"No, the academy isn’t going to take care of our trip. Instead, they will pay us all for all the expenses during the trip after we return and submit our report. Oh, but you don’t have to worry about that either. We have already rented a ship privately and arranged all the supplies that we might need."
Adrian frowned.
"Where did you get the money for all that?"
Supplies aside, anything that had to do with ships was extremely expensive since most of the international trade happened by sea. Evangeline was only a count’s daughter and didn’t have all that much money. Xion, meanwhile, was a commoner, so he wouldn’t have had anything either.
Evangeline pointed at the last member of the team, who was listening to them while sitting quietly with a scowl on her face.
’Right, she is also from a ducal family, so she must’ve provided the funds.’
They discussed a few more things after that, but all the preparations were complete.
It was time to leave for the mission.
