Regnum Aetern: Dual Rebirth

Chapter 206: Searching for information

Sitting with their backs against the crystal beast’s corpse, the four of them rested in silence.

It had been about an hour since they defeated the crystal beast, and they had recovered enough that they could now move.

Evangeline turned to Adrian.

"Hey, Adi, we defeated the Phase Four creature that could pose a threat to us, so now what?"

Xion nodded.

"That’s right. As Miss Evangeline said, we have managed to kill the crystal beast, and according to what your eternarch had told us, there is no other being on this island that can pose a threat to us. All that’s left now is to explore the island and leave after we are done. The question is, where do we start?"

Adrian looked ahead thoughtfully.

’Where to start...’

Since the island was actually a kingdom, they would have to spend a lot more time exploring it than they had initially thought.

But of course, that was not what the commoner boy was asking.

Adrian turned to look behind, at the pure white castle that stood not too far away.

The main question was whether they should explore the castle first and then proceed to explore the city or explore the city first to get a better idea of things and then explore the castle by the end.

It wasn’t a question that needed too much thought, but the castle in question was a fragment relic, so there was a need for caution.

Adrian turned to his teammates.

"What are your thoughts? Which one should we explore first, the kingdom or the castle?"

Evangeline was the first to raise her hand and answered excitedly.

"Castle! It’s gotta be the castle! I mean, we have to explore it anyway, so why not do it now?"

Xion raised his hand with a smile.

"I, personally, would not like to take any chances."

Saria thought for a bit before opening her mouth.

"We should remain cautious. Traps were very commonly used in ancient times, so who knows what we might get into. Still, I lean more towards exploring the castle first."

’Hmm...’

After thinking for a bit, Adrian spoke his decision.

"All four of us will scatter through the city and search the houses and other buildings. We need to find anything about the castle or the history of this kingdom. Only when we have found some relevant information will we explore the castle."

His teammates nodded.

After resting for a few more minutes, they stood up and scattered in different directions. Each of them had an incarnation of Alisardarc sitting on their shoulder. Adrian had given them to his teammates so that they could communicate with each other.

And so, Adrian walked through the streets of the ancient kingdom, looking around to find a building that seemed worth searching.

’Hm? That building...’

There was a tall building not too far ahead. It looked distinct from the houses and shops on the street, as though important. Its condition didn’t look too bad either.

Adrian walked closer and pulled on the door to open it, but it wouldn’t budge.

’It’s jammed? Well, whatever.’

He punched the door, and it crumbled.

Walking inside, the inside was quite dark. The walls of the building were covered in roots of the plants growing out from it. The space felt damp, and the floor was extremely dirty.

Walking in a bit further, he entered a large room. There were several small windows here that allowed the light to enter, illuminating the interior. There were tables and chairs organized at intervals. Strange objects that supposedly looked like ornaments hung on the walls.

’It looks like some kind of office or formal space.’

Well, he was here to find clues, so that may have been a good thing.

Sitting on his shoulder, Alisardarc looked around the room curiously, then poked his neck with its beak.

[Feeble One, I don’t understand.]

Adrian asked while continuing to search the room.

"What is it that you don’t understand?"

[That girl named Saria is blind, isn’t she? The only reason she can even fight and move around like a normal person is because of her Origin ability. But her Origin ability only allows her to see things that are covered in mana, so how is she even going to explore? Even right now, she is wandering around the city aimlessly.]

Adrian shook his head.

"No, I would imagine she has her ways. Even during the battle, I see her occasionally releasing mana through her legs and spreading it on the ground. She can cover things in her own mana to make her Origin ability register them and convert them into visual information."

Moreover, she must have other methods too. After all, Adrian was certain that her close combat skills were unmatched by any of the cadets who enrolled this year. Achieving that wouldn’t be possible with those crippling flaws.

After thoroughly searching the building, all he was able to find were strange small wooden blocks with something written on them in the ancient language.

While Adrian knew how to read the ancient language, his proficiency was as good as that of a five-year-old since he hadn’t learned it properly and only learned enough that he wasn’t completely clueless.

Walking out of the building, he stared at the writings on the wooden blocks.

’Thank you... thank... thankfully.... No, maybe that’s thank goodness. Ugh, whatever.’

He threw away the wooden blocks.

He could only read the formally written ancient language used in ancient documents and books. Casual writing often included slurs, which could have different meanings depending on the context.

Just then, Alisardarc’s voice entered his ear.

[There is a message from that commoner boy: I have found something I believe is a rather important clue.]

Adrian paused and thought for a bit before turning to the black bird.

"Share this message with everyone: Regroup near the crystal beast’s corpse so that Xion can share what he has discovered."

Saying that, Adrian turned around and began walking in the direction of the field where they had fought the crystal beast.

After a while, all of them once again gathered in front of the headless body of the crystal beast.

Evangeline covered her nose.

"Yuck, it’s starting to become smelly."

Xion and Saria said nothing, but it was clear that they also agreed with her.

’It really is getting a bit smelly. I guess it’s not good to leave a rotting corpse around.’

Besides, the sun was slowly beginning to set, and the surroundings were growing darker.

He looked at Evangeline.

"Set it on fire. If the upper layer doesn’t burn because of the crystal-like skin, then burn it from the inside."

She looked at the corpse, made a face, and reluctantly materialized fire in her hands. Moments later, the surroundings were illuminated by the burning corpse of the crystal beast.

Adrian turned to Xion.

"So? What did you find?"

Xion handed him a stack of damp papers tied together. The pages were filled with ancient writings.

The commoner boy began speaking.

"This seems to be a book that contains information about the various kinds of wonders in this kingdom. There are a lot of things mentioned, including a strange ship, a talking tree, a six-winged bird, and... the wondrous royal castle."
