Chapter 937: Chapter 937: Broken Star
Today, the empty void of the mortalverse was broken in a fitting burst of light and energy.
The energy was not bright, nor was it a sense of peace or assurance.
Because this light was not natural, it was the signal of something terribly bad having happened.
Stars all over the universe shook, shuddering as if they had sensed the fall of a beloved one.
Out of these lights that had suddenly appeared in different corners of the mortalverse, one particular light was distinct.
In a world of monsters who could move faster than the speed of light, this particular light was moving incredibly slowly.
Or rather, the being that was moving within the light that was moving too slowly.
As the light cleared a little, the figure that was within revealed herself. The Primordial Moth.
She was flapping her wings, leaving behind a trail of stardust as she was chased by her stars.
Soon, her trail of light curved as she drifted into a galaxy.
The scale was zoomed to a smaller scale in her perspective as she softly landed on a barren planet.
Her small moth body began to transform before she even touched the ground. Taking on her humanoid form, she collapsed to her knees, her palms padding over the dirty ground as she coughed up a puddle of blood.
She stayed there, eyes closed as she healed herself while stationed under the soothing light of a thousand broken stars.
The temperature of the planet had risen drastically. Any little lifeform that could have formed at the subterranean levels of this planet would probably be dead by now.
The sudden proximity to thousands of stars was a death sentence for any creature that did not have an affinity to this intense kind of heat.
These stars, broken and on the verge of exploding after being exposed to those intense battles, were the only thing the Primordial Moth had left from that war.
As she took those deep breaths, she stopped herself from vomiting blood and finally opened her eyes.
Within those shining eyes was something she had not felt in a long time, something that she had last felt when she was still a weak little moth so many eons ago.
She felt fear.
Not just any kind of fear or the fear that could only be induced with a Law.
No, she felt the true fear that all creatures felt when they encountered a predator that was too much to handle.
Yes, the Primordial Moth could finally identify that feeling properly. She felt like a prey.
That was it.
She was a prey.
She had thought she was hunting the All-King, she thought she was the undisputed predator with the cosmic command over a sea of stars and eons of memories under her belt.
She had never expected things to become so dire so quickly. If not that she had turned her back on the Supreme Dragon in that final moment, the one they called Jordan would have been able to catch up to her.
*Sigh!*
The Primordial Moth sighed. Still on her knees, she took her hands off the ground and straightened her spine so that she could kneel upright.
Only now was the gash on her abdomen revealed. Three deep and blood claw marks were etched on her belly, exposing her gutty internal organs.
It wasn’t healing, the gap was not closing. At the edges of the three claw gashes were patches of demonic energy that stuck to her flesh like a heartless virus hell-bent on eating her up.
Of course, she would be able to get rid of it soon enough as she was no longer close to the cause of her injuries.
But the reality of what had happened was grim. She had lost and was forced to escape.
She looked up at the stars that hurdled around the planet she was on, creating an intensely hot atmosphere.
These stars were not ordinary stars, they were semi-sentient and a direct manifestation of her own power over the Law of Stars and a Singularity.
By all rights, she was an extremely terrifying being that could kill almost all Supreme Level Immortals if she encountered them.
When going into Draconic Heaven, she had gone in with the mind of someone on a mission, and accompanying her was a sea of these special stars.
A literal sea, meaning at least more than a billion of these stars had followed her to Draconic Heaven.
But not only had she lost terribly without even seeing the All-King, but she had also only managed to escape with just a few thousand of the stars.
Just a few thousand.
Out of a couple billion.
The more she thought about it, the more she felt cold all over.
Never had she met a race that was so annoyingly efficient at dismantling power.
It did not make any sense at first.
After all, who could fight against an army of stars?
Well, the lions not only proved that they could fight the stars, they actively went ahead to either snuff them out, or capture them.
Yes, through her enhanced vision, the Primordial Moth had seen lion kings roaring with glee as they flew into the heart of those stars, accompanied by their vassals or other lions.
It didn’t matter if they were too weak. The weaker lions were not stupid and steered clear of the killer stars.
It was those lions that were tier 7 and above that seemed to have gone mad at the sight of these stars which should have been unkillable.
It turned out stars could very much be killed like normal creatures, even though they were not alive in the first place.
It was true because the lion race made it a fact with their action. Their desire to actualize their conquest over the stars had led them to actually conquer the stars in the most literal sense to them.
The Primordial Moth had thought she was doing something meaningful, and perhaps, she was. But at the end of the day, she was just acting as a sharpening stone for all the lions.
What was worse for her was that she didn’t even get to kill many lions before she encountered Jordan who despite being outnumbered, had been able to call on some mysterious power to overpower her.
The Primordial Moth felt scared. She felt defeated. This wasn’t even her fight, she was just here for the chance of salvation, for the chance of being able to get to the Divine Tier.
Kneeling there, tears started to flow from her eyes. She wept. Not because of Kael or Jordan or the defeat, but because she had a chance to do something about her situation.
The chance to give her life more meaning had come. For hundreds of millions of years, she had been waiting with too much potential wasted on the Immortal Tier.
This was supposed to be her chance to ascend with the Highest Will sparing her the effects of the rules.
But no, even this, she had failed.
And so she wept in grief, mourning what she could become. Or perhaps, this was her destiny, to die as the universe was wiped out by a cold unfeeling god.
"Highest Will!" The Primordial Moth cried out, gripping some dirt in her hand as she looked up to the sky.
Her voice rippled into the vast underweb of collective telepathic channels, something that the Highest Will should constantly be listening to.
At least, she should be waiting outside for her to know if she had succeeded or failed.
At least, he should be here to talk to her.
But he wasn’t.
"Highest Will!" She called again, this time with a fiercer expression filled with anger and an abandonment of reason.
"You fucking elephant god! Come out and hear me!" She shouted again. The dust and dirt were pushed away slightly by the sound waves she emitted.
Ultimately, no one answered her.
The only response was the cold silence of a universe that was being stripped bare by the greedy players.
Had she fallen from grace?
Was she no longer a player?
Was she ever a player in the first place?
Or was she just a pawn? A pawn that was made useful since she refused to die.
She asked herself those questions and her shoulders slumped. The moth wings behind her swept on the floor and curved upon her feet.
Suddenly, her eyes brimmed again with power. Her brows furrowed and her hands were instantly balled into fists.
*BAM!*
Her fist slammed into the ground, the force melting the rock faster than it could be blasted away.
With a few more pounds, the Primordial Moth was standing kneeling inside a pool of hot lava.
The tears that dropped from her cheeks did not cool the lava, but it survived in its liquid form long enough to fall into it.
"Do not cry too much, Star," A deep soothing voice echoed softly into the ears of the Primordial Moth, instantly causing her to sit right up.
"Who’s there?!" She asked, looking around. Her psychic senses spread out, catching the surrounding star system in her sensory nodes.
The stars floating in the void shivered, they were broken within but they still had the same killer drive that they were made with.
After some seconds, her frown became stronger because she was not able to detect anyone or anything around. Not even a sign of telepathy.
"Oh, Star. Are you so grieved by your own failure that you can no longer recognize my voice?
Or have you just forgotten me?"
The voice came again, this time lingering longer for a few more moments.
And then, it clicked, she recognized the voice as though she had heard it yesterday.
"Mortality," She said, her voice becoming stoic and indifferent all of a sudden as unpleasant memories flashed through her mind.
