By evening, the number of monsters outside the city had dropped to nearly nothing, but Kalli could see grass growing all over the region, where the energy weapons had blasted away the layer of gravel and ash.

Perhaps the level of violence that they had employed to stop the waves of the third trial were just what the region needed to recover from the volcanic eruptions.

They didn’t have a lot of spare manpower to do much about it right now, but in the morning, Kalli planned to at least send a few teams out to double-check the area. It might help convince the system that this was all their territory, and that would give them more time before the next waves of monsters arrived.

The further out that they could force the monsters to arrive, the longer that they got to shoot at them before they became a threat to the city.

Now that they had a whole ring of heavy weapons, plus the turrets on the outer walls, and the lasers on the rooftops of the buildings, they should be able to vastly reduce the amount of work that the heroes had to risk their lives doing personally.

The trials certainly wouldn’t let anyone slack. But they might be convinced to give the heroes at least a little breathing room.

Having the trials be anything but a desperate attempt to survive was a dream for everyone within the city at this point, Kalli included. But with the improvements, there was a real chance that they might actually manage the task.

Not trusting the System to refrain from messing with them, and exhausted from the day’s battle, the heroes all turned in early, and set their alarms for ten minutes to midnight.

If something happened, that was when it was going to do it, and they all wanted to be ready.

The positive confirmation came to them exactly at midnight.

{As other survivor groups have not yet completed their trials, no additional waves will be spawned within range of Marimgar today.}

That was an immense relief to the heroes of Marimgar, and everyone prepared to get at least a little bit more sleep.

But the relief was not just that they had the day off. It was knowing that they were not alone. There were still other groups of survivors out there who had done well enough that they were still holding on.

They might even have someone like Kalli, who could give them advantages and keep them supplied after the end of the world.

And if that was the case, then all might not be lost.

The simple knowledge that there were other groups of survivors somewhere on the planet, still fighting it out and doing their best to reclaim territory helped settle the dreams of the heroes for one evening. It was a welcome reprieve from the dreams of monsters in never-ending waves that had plagued their early evening sleep.

With that news, the mood in Marimgar was much lighter by the time that the sun came up.

They had a lot of work left to do, getting everyone settled, finishing the cleanup, some not so minor gear repairs, and a few requests for gear from the Coordinator.

After the last battle, a few new strategies had formed, and one of them was to get a pair of Pulse Rifles and alternate them, since the weapons had such a long charge cycle. Instead of swapping to a regular rife, or a laser rifle, they could use two Pulse Rifles, keep their mana expenditure low, and still keep up their rate of fire.

But that wasn’t the only thing that Kalli had planned for the day.

"Everyone gather around. I’ve got an announcement to make. I would like teams to go out and patrol the area that is within range of our city guns.

Make the ten kilometre loop, but stay well clear of the black temple.

The monsters that came too close to that thing simply died, and I don’t want that happening to any of you. Losing a hero on patrol while we establish our boundaries would be incredibly wasteful.

However, I don’t trust that there will be no danger, so I would like for you to go in a different sort of team than you might be used to.

One armoured personnel carrier, with a full ten hero team in it.

However, the driver will be from a five-person team. The other four members of that team will take these small flying vehicles and provide air support for the patrol."

Kalli showed them the image, and the heroes immediately began to discuss what the common use name for them should be.

"Hoverbikes," Sergeant Sanchez insisted.

"But they’re clearly quads, or flying utility vehicles with a heavy gun." Cliff countered.

"Doesn’t have that nice ring to it," Sanchez replied with a slight smile.

"What does the system call them?"

"Assault speeders."

The heroes considered that for a moment. It wasn’t a bad name for them.

"Save hoverbikes for when we find a single person version. These can be the assault speeders, since they’re mounted with heavy weapons. How much can they lift?" Temple asked.

Kalli shrugged. "It’s not in their sales sheet, so I have no idea. You’re thinking you might need to use them to get the APC out of a jam?"

The Paladin nodded. "Yeah. If we get that armoured beast stuck, we’re in big trouble. But if the assault speeders have enough pull to get it out of a hole, we should be alright. I know that the APC comes with winches, for the worst-case scenario."

Kalli laughed. "The worst-case scenario is to just have a warrior in power armour get out and move the vehicle themselves. Seriously, the thing only weighs like six tonnes, I’m sure that you can push it, maybe even lighten the front enough to let it dig its way out of a hole."

That made the heroes chuckle.

A couple of warriors in power armour could likely flip an overturned APC back on its wheels. They could definitely do better than the average winch.
