Reincarnated As The Heroes Guide

Chapter 216: Mass Room Assignments

Kalli settled in to finish assigning apartments to the level 0 residents based on the jobs that they had registered with the Arks, and where things were located in the city.

That got people moving, and the cameras showed that while there was a lot of envy for those who got to move off the Arks, it was with a sense of celebration that they were leaving, and the extra room was a motivating factor for the others to keep trying hard.

They all understood, thanks to the Kalkan Propaganda, that the heroes were essential to their survival.

So, with the people reaching level 0, they were considered something like trainee Heroes.

Worthy of benefits.

They had all been conditioned to see them as deserving of the perks that they were being given, like more living space in the apartments above ground. Because they all understood that it came with great danger and greater responsibility.

Not as great as the people on the Arks suspected, as most of the level 0 residents would end up working very mundane jobs to keep the city running.

But the thought was there.

Besides, when they did finally make it to level 1, they would be going into the dungeon to forage for food and build their power. Then, they would be joining in the trials along with all the other heroes.

Nobody knew how long the Trials would be ongoing, but it was assumed that it would be a perpetual sort of thing.

Every group that Kalli assigned brought more people to the surface, and every group that moved in brought a few more requests through the city’s app, formerly the Academy App, for some sort of small change.

Well, mostly small changes.

There were a few of the runners who were less interested in quickly getting their skill for a chance to reach level 1 than they were in the possibility of fully renovating their apartments to the most modern of standards.

Kalli simply turned those requests down, stating that there was a cooldown timer on the buildings, as she had just created them all.

Who could tell her that she was wrong?

"What will everyone do this afternoon? Some sort of training drills?" one of the new arrivals asked Kalli.

"No, we will sleep. You see, the waves start promptly at midnight.

You may not have noticed if you weren’t finished with the others before then, but new monsters appear at exactly midnight, along with a System message. So, we sleep early, and prepare to defend the city every night at midnight, unless the System has specified otherwise.

It’s been working so far, and it gives us time to prepare our defences before the enemy gets close.

The heroes who were patrolling the area, like the ones who found your group and brought them in, will start coming back soon so that they are not out too late to get a good afternoon’s worth of sleep.

Every hero is going to be working hard tonight, and the System said that it would be adjusting the difficulty based on our performance.

So, this is likely to be the worst trial that we’ve seen so far."

The hero simply sighed as he slowly ate.

"Well, at least we got one decent meal in before the end. If we had to go out some way, it’s better that we were at least able to see a bit of luxury and proper food."

Kalli smiled. "It’s not that serious. We’ve seriously upgraded the city in the last day. If anything comes for us, we’ll give it hell. There are heavy artillery emplacements on dozens of rooftops, the ones that are irregular heights, so they can fire past each other.

Then, we have a full perimeter of heroes around the city with automated defence turrets, assault speeders, and mobile heavy weapons platforms.

Even if the monsters give it their all, I think that we should be alright.

The System said that there is only one force on the planet that’s doing better than we are, and that’s the Frost Giants. I don’t know what territory they’re taking over, but I suspect that it’s far from here, given that we’ve seen volcanic eruptions, heavy rains and heat waves.

That means any other force that gets thrown at us is already at a disadvantage because the city of Marimgar is doing so well.

Even if it puts two of them together, it might not be enough to seriously threaten our defences."

Her confidence was contagious, and the heroes were slowly beginning to believe that they had come to a city that had an actual plan and a chance, not just a bit of decent food for them before the end.

But what Kalli told them next had them all concerned.

"Now, once you’ve eaten your fill, I’ve arranged rooms for you all. Go and sleep, come see me here when you get up. I wasn’t joking about you still needing time to recover, and I’m not going to send you out to the front at midnight.

However, that doesn’t mean that there won’t be work for you overnight.

Heroes are strong and smart, I will have you all analyzing combat reports for me, and if necessary, you may have to help run ammunition as well."

One of the warriors nodded. "Where is the ammunition bunker? How much supply do you have?"

"Don’t worry about that, it will all make sense in the morning. Go and sleep, don’t rush back, we’ve got this handled."

As if they could actually sleep.

Just knowing that there was a wave starting at midnight, even if it didn’t start right next to the city, was enough to put them on edge, and they were all setting alarms for eleven at night so that they would be up and ready to go.

"Where do we go for food? It was brought here, so there should be a communal kitchen, right?"

Kalli nodded. "There are shops all through the city, but the Heroes have a kitchen in the Academy, main floor dining room. Most of the heroes gather there, and the chef is one of our mages, he’s quite skilled."

"Thank you. We will be sure to be fed and ready, if we have rations arranged."

Kalli chuckled. "It’s a buffet. And the heroes’ kitchen allows you to pack a lunch. Trust me, you’ll be fine. Just ask any of the heroes where it is. Your rooms are in the third dorm building, just to your left when you exit the front door. Fourth floor."
