The Power Armour suits were being damaged to failure, a first for Marimgar. So, Kalli added them to the next round of supply trucks that left.
If the tanks could hold the rest of the line could hold behind them.
She could see that the heroes had retreated ten metres from the wall in most of the city, giving the heavy weapons trucks a better angle on the horde. However, that had already cost them many of the turrets, which were placed closer to the wall.
Not a huge loss, Kalli decided.
When they were first placed, they were the greatest damage dealers on the line. But as the heroes advanced, the lasers were falling behind, simply due to the lack of damage adding skills that went with hero status at the higher levels.
Plus, the heroes were getting better at rapid fire attacks.
Every hour that the battle dragged on built the power level of the heroes, but it also built exhaustion. Humans weren’t meant to operate at full capacity for half a day at a time. They could fight steadily, but that constant flow of monsters coming to the walls was quickly wearing them down, no matter how much heavy firepower Marimgar had.
There had to be something that they could do.
Perhaps they could send up an Ark and wipe out the battlefield? That would burn through precious fuel driving the auxiliary power to drive the weapon. But it would save a lot of lives if they timed it right.
Kalli frantically scrolled through her store weapons listings, looking for something that would work, and finally found just the right thing.
The rocket pods for the attack helicopters.
She had purchased the rockets before, and now she found that the pods could be purchased as well. If she mounted those to an assault speeder, they could carpet bomb the zone around the walls with high output fragmentation rockets.
The Speeders were quick enough that they could likely dodge the incoming fire, but the pods were too large to mount on a flight suit. Kalli purchased a dozen of them, leaving them in their cubes. Then, she sent ammunition with them in the back of a runner’s truck.
"Just get them to equip the rocket pods and strafe the walls. It should clear a portion of the line, then they can continue fighting, or come back for a reload," she instructed.
"Got it. They’ll be happy to see anything that clears the walls."
The truck raced off to the lines, and Kalli watched her monitors as the first of the speeders was equipped.
Getting over the wall, where the ranged attackers could fire at them, was a highly risky proposition, even five hundred metres in the air and moving at hundreds of kilometres an hour.
The Pulse Cannon on the back drew the attention of the Insectoids, and when the rockets began to stream out of the pods on the sides of the speeder, the attackers visibly panicked.
They lost their formation and began running away from the targeted locations.
But that only put them in the line of fire for more rockets.
They didn’t explode by proximity like the air defence weapons did. They exploded on contact, and the driver was not going easy on the ammunition.
He simply unloaded fifty rockets in the course of five seconds, wiping out a hundred-metre swathe of the front lines, then retreated toward the Hall of Heroes to get more rockets.
The process was repeated a half dozen times around the city, as each of the speeders took two rocket pods.
They were horrifically hard on ammunition, but the damage done by a full rocket barrage was so much higher than even the Pulse Cannon that their only request was more rockets.
Unfortunately for them, the speeder wouldn’t equip more than two.
With the rocket pods mounted on small pontoons, the speeders looked much different than they had, almost like odd little aircraft with wings at the back. But the pods were hard mounted, not adjustable, so the driver had to aim the speeder to aim the rockets.
It was not a high precision attack method.
Fully loaded, the pods held two hundred rockets, a hundred a side, which took a total of four purchases of rockets to fulfil. Four System Points per reload, and they would burn through them in seconds while they cleared the walls.
But it was working.
The pilot who used to fly the attack helicopters for the main Arks of the Kalkan Fleet came running into the Hall of Heroes.
"Coordinator, can you spare me one of those speeders? I know that I’m still level 1, but I’m a hell of a pilot, and I know my way around a rocket attack."
Kalli nodded, "I will make you one, grab someone, anyone, to man the rear gun and go."
Even if being shot down was essentially a death sentence for them, in an irrevocable way, Kalli would send them out at this point. Anything that broke the offensive.
"How many points do you have?" one of the runners asked, panting for breath as he ran inside.
"Enough. What did you have in mind?"
"A thousand pulse rifles. They’re easier on mana than the laser rifles, and we can all start pushing to the lines to help the heroes.
If we set up on the buildings closest to the fight, on the balconies and rooftops, we won’t be in the way, and the rifles have more than enough range."
Kalli laughed and nodded. "I will come out and load a truck. You pass them out to anyone who will take one."
At level 0, they wouldn’t get the bonuses to damage on the weapons. But they would get experience for killing the enemy, and that seemed to count for the System when it decided who got to become a hero, just as much as the physical minimums.
Once the truck was loaded, Kalli equipped the flight suit and went on a quick tour of the rooftop guns.
She needed to restock on System Points from the kill quests.
