With the rewards given out to the heavy guns, and a fresh influx of points in her system, Kalli had no shortage of resources to arm the not quite heroes of Marimgar.
They had already sent out a truckload of rifles, and Kalli could see the gunfire starting from upper balconies and rooftops all over the city. The damage might be limited without skills to help them, but the pure weight of fire from another thousand rifles had to count for something, and they couldn’t miss if they just shot into the crowds outside the walls.
That was the general strategy, as trying to shoot at anything near the heroes was simply too risky.
They weren’t snipers, and most of them barely knew how to work a pulse rifle. But if they aimed well outside the walls, there was no way to fail. Every shot would hit something, and even a weakened monster was better than nothing.
Kalli took a moment as she flew over the city to record the firefight, the valiant stand of the Marimgar Heroes against the insect tide.
It was utterly insane, even in the dark. But that only emphasized the number of energy weapon shots that were active at any given instant. The afterimages on recordings were especially dramatic, even more than what the naked eye would see, and it would make for an excellent war story proof of heroism to make propaganda videos later.
Kalli briefly felt bad for having that thought, but deep down she knew that there would be a day that it was necessary.
The Arks were watching the battle live from various cameras around the city, but the residents on it were not directly involved in the battle, and they would forget soon enough that the dangers on the surface were very real.
And when that happened, they would start pushing for more and better.
After that was when civil unrest started, and Kalli really didn’t want the city devolving into dystopia before they even had a chance to fully build it.
Despite Kalli’s concerns, the extra rifles looked like they were enough to hold everything stable for the moment, and there were no Heroes waiting for her when she got back to the Hall.
"How are the runners doing with the power armour?" She asked the first person to enter after she returned.
"We’re out again, but it looks like everyone in power armour is holding out now. There is a lot of damage to the suits that we brought back, and the Tinkers are super busy, as well as the other new arrivals with repair skills.
They think that they’ll start having them ready to ship back out in an hour, and we’ve got them labelled for their owners.
It’s not like they’ll fit anyone else now that they’re out of the box."
Kalli chuckled at the young man’s annoyance.
"Got it. Do we need another truckload of guns for the residents?"
"More guns are always good. We’ve got about a thousand more that can fight, and aren’t needed as runners or to operate shops. The rest are on repair, food or supply duties."
"Got it, a thousand more rifles. How is the ammunition stockpile for the regular rifles doing?"
"Steady. We’ve learned the trick to getting them quickly from the robotic assistant. As long as we give it a quadrant, it doesn’t argue."
The battle grew even more fierce as dawn approached, and finally, everyone could see the true extent of the horror.
Camera feeds to the Arks and to Kalli’s Hall of Heroes showed insectoids stretching to the horizon, with holes blasted in their formation where the guns of Marimgar were constantly blasting away.
It was insane, completely unreasonable.
Yet, they were holding.
The supply runs were a bit different this time, mostly because Kalli had to stack rockets outside for the Assault speeders to come reload, but for the most part, the only thing that the residents of Marimgar could do was to keep shooting and hope that it was enough.
The centipede transporters were gone from the battlefield now, and the back lines appeared to be nothing but warriors and larger warriors.
By Kalli’s estimates, that was the equivalent of the insect army’s reserves, the last of their force left, intended to bolster the main force during a siege that had never fully developed. If the walls were higher, and their damage levels lower, they might have had to fight off the insects for longer.
But the attackers could make it over the walls, and they were dying in waves the moment that they reached the city.
That would be Kalli’s next project.
Better walls.
There were nearly no laser turrets left anyhow, they had all been overrun, but the heroes were pushing forward again, and were nearly back to the walls.
Using the cameras mounted on the speeders, buildings, and surviving laser turrets, Kalli began to compile footage to produce some heroic film scenes from the battle. If nothing else, there should be some surviving evidence of their battles here during the third trial.
{Congratulations! 80 Percent of the wave has been eliminated.}
Kalli smiled as the System Message went out to every hero in Marimgar.
It was a bit of a strange situation, being under attack, with enemies as far as the eye could see, but the System telling them that it was already eighty percent defeated. But as terrifying as the numbers were, they also told the heroes how much longer they had to hold on.
Eighty percent done, twenty percent to go.
They could do this, and they would have the wave nearly cleared out before the noon timer ran out. Not that the timer mattered, as they had met a victory condition long before the survival timer mattered.
But getting to rest early would be a huge win for them.
All that was left now was for Kalli to find something that would get them through tomorrow’s wave just as smoothly. They had lost a few levels today, and there was a chance they had lost a number of workers in the upper city as well, people who had defended against the internal invasion.
But they would have to count the dead later, the insect swarm was only getting more violent.
