Reincarnated As The Heroes Guide

Chapter 226: Marimgar Behind The Wall

{Construction total with furnished units, laser turrets and improved armour plating calculated.}

{Cost} 384,000 Points.

Kalli winced at the cost. It was brutal, but that was all the things that they needed right now, in one spot. The only other items that she needed were for the heroes. Those could wait until they found out what the next trial was going to be.

If the fourth was environmental and not combat related, the heroes priorities would change fast.

They still had six days of the Third Trial to live through, though. And that meant that they were going to need every single bit of defence that they could manage. If they didn’t keep the enemies out of the city, they were doomed, no matter what the next trial was.

Kalli finalized the purchase, and the walls began to sprout from the ground, rising into the sky around the city as everyone stopped what they were doing to stare at the phenomenon.

"No matter how many times I see the System produce something, it never gets any less strange to see it doing mass scale construction. But seriously, how many points did it take to buy something like that?" Sanchez asked.

"Everything that everyone made yesterday, plus most of what I had left over from the last battle.

I’ve got enough for the early supplies tomorrow, and then I’ll start collecting quests so that I get the points to keep adding ammunition stockpiles to the supply trucks. Getting it up to the top of that wall is going to become an issue, but I think I’ve got enough points to build a proper cargo lift."

Sanchez shrugged. "We can just use an Assault Speeder most of the time. But how the hell is anyone supposed to get up there?"

"There are stairs and ramps. Just not a ramp you can drive a truck up."

"Oh, so we can likely use a power dolly or something, if we even have one in the city. Or we can just have muscular men with carts push them up the ramps," one of the runners joked.

She wasn’t wrong. There was no shortage of muscular men, and women, in the city. With the warrior class being gender-neutral, overwhelming strength was everywhere in the city.

"Well, we will figure it out. There are plenty of ways to get supplies up to the top of the wall. Even if we just drag a bin full of gear up with a rope. The defensive fortifications are amazing, and from what I can see, all those little apartments attached to the wall are going to have a great view of the city.

I mean, as long as the wall is standing.

But seeing the hologram, it looks like you really went overkill on the design. What are you expecting them to throw at us next? Frost Giants?"

Kalli shrugged. "If I could guess what was next, the System wouldn’t really be trying, now would it?"

The heroes chuckled grimly. That was an unfortunate truth of their existence these days. Nobody knew what they were going to get from the System. Not even the tone that it was going to be using to send messages.

It could be bubbly and sadistic, simplistic and clearly automated, or it could be cold and mechanical.

You never knew.

All over the city, people were snapping photos, but what Kalli was watching most closely was the response from the internal messaging function of the Arks.

The residents could use it to talk to each other, and she quickly opened a window, then coded a short algorithm to pick up the most commonly used buzzwords, so she could see the general sentiment, as well as what was happening in the main public chat channel.

There were so many people in the channel that the chat usually just blurred by before you could really read most of it. But today was worse than usual.

So, Kalli changed to the conversation threads.

Those at least had a theme, and you could guess by the up or down votes what everyone thought about the idea. And what she found was that the Ark residents were less concerned about the fact that the whole city was now surrounded by a fortress wall than by the fact that there were thousands of tiny pod apartments on the walls.

They had balconies, and would be perfect if they were set up with terraced gardens.

It wouldn’t be much, but it would be fresh real food of your own.

They had wanted grapes, but Kalli had forgotten about them in the rush to paste together a functional wall. Though, there were still plenty of open areas where you could grow grapes if you wanted.

Sometimes it was better to let the city develop the way that the residents wanted it.

She put up the buildings, and then they could build the actual culture of Marimgar around them. It would be something different than what it was before, but the city was quickly developing its own habits, inside jokes, and everything else that made up a local culture.

They even had people talking about running the dungeons after a nap.

It was clearly a joke, saying that they could get a little fighting in so they didn’t get bored, but that too was part of how Marimgar coped with the Trials.

This latest one was absolutely insane, as far as Kalli could tell. Those creatures were apex predators in insect form. If they were actually living anywhere near any of the other monsters that the heroes had faced so far, it wouldn’t even be a fight.

They would simply annihilate everything and take over.

And they would do it without using magic.

There were some creatures, like the gargoyles and the Ogre Lords, who did use some level of magic already. But not those insects. At first, some had thought that the ranged attacks were magic. But once they started to examine the bodies, it became clear to everyone that they were actually a highly evolved predator species.

And that was even more terrifying.
