As feared, the corpses had vanished right at noon along with the last of the enemies.

Nobody would miss the rest of the insects, but they would miss the points that they could get from turning in the bodies. However, what mattered more now was that the System hadn’t mentioned extra waves, or days off.

So, they were almost certainly going to have to do it again in the morning.

And that meant that Kalli had work to do, improving the city before they faced another influx of monsters.

"Is everyone safely behind the lines? Good. Now, I’m going to start putting up a new set of walls, and then I will take suggestions about how to decorate the inside."

The Heroes in the hall chuckled at her commentary as Kalli pulled up a holographic display of the city’s infrastructure.

Then, she started planning out a new fortress around the base.

Instead of simply creating a wall, Kalli decided to try a couple different designs, to see if something caught her fancy. After all, they were going to be in this city for quite a while, likely the rest of their lives, so she might as well make it cool.

Perhaps a star fort?

Well, the old style, not the orbital station type.

An eight pointed star gave her eight natural spots for heavy weapons, multiple angles that defensive lasers could be mounted in and effectively fire at enemies. If the wall was flat, the lasers would have to protrude to target effectively. But if the wall was angled, you could have opposing fields of fire.

Then, they could build up defensive positions inside the walls, with spare supplies and resting areas for the heroes.

Normally, a star fort would have the protruding areas filled with dirt so that they couldn’t be smashed through with cannon fire. But Kalli planned to use layers of alloy and concrete to do the same job.

The System wasn’t picky about how she built the wall, it charged by the running metre, with three different stages.

Simple walls, defensible walls, and fortress walls.

Obviously, the third choice was the only logical one.

If the outer wall had a whole metre of armour alloy, followed by three metres of concrete and another alloy layer, it didn’t matter as much what was backing it up, as long as the wall had proper structural support.

So, Kalli let her inner IT worker loose on the problem and did what she always did.

She copied and pasted code.

Designs from the buildings in town were added to the wall, fortifying structures that would hold up against anything short of an orbital strike. That also added a whole city worth of terraced housing to the inside of the walls, simply because she didn’t want to cut them out, and the System wouldn’t charge her any extra until she furnished them.

So, she could have a whole network of apartments on the inside of a thirty-metre tall wall, which was five metres wide at the top, and sloped on the inside like a dam, getting wider at the bottom. But that space was entirely reinforced concrete, instead of earthworks.

The alloy layers near the outside would allow them to have a whole section of the wall blasted away in combat without losing combat effectiveness, as long as the emplacements weren’t damaged.

There was a double row of electrified razor wire at the top, beneath the crenellations, and each of the eight points would get an anti-air battery relocated from within the city, as the new wall blocked the downward line of firing anyhow.

Whoever lived at the top of that wall was going to hate life, as there were no escalators, just winding staircases between units attached to the sloping inside of the walls.

In her old world, that would be a slum area, as living attached to the wall was not only low amenity, but extremely high risk. But here, it was better than nothing, and they could count all the extra living pods as more housing for the city when the System calculated their progress.

Every three metres, there was a position with a hard point to set up a Pulse Cannon, to supplement the eight {Air Defence Battery} Plasma Cannons that would be the base’s primary ground defence.

Add to that all the heroes with magic and rifles, and they should be pretty good.

Then, she added another layer of razor wire loops at the bottom of the wall, to keep monsters from easily getting to it, and extending the design deep into the bedrock, so it couldn’t be dug underneath of.

You didn’t have to go far before you were into the water table, where all tunnels would flood nearly instantly.

The city still only had one primary exit, but now they had Assault Speeders, and they could add more flying transports if they wanted them. So, the heroes could still get out if they needed.

If they were feeling especially brave, there were skateboard style hoverboards in the store for a point. They weren’t intended for a thirty-metre drop, but heroes were durable.

On second thought, five points for the rare grade was likely much safer, and still a terrible idea.

The fortress wall was going to be horrifically expensive, especially after replacing the laser turrets and adding more for coverage on the new design. They would have many more turrets now, and a need for more people to keep them charged.

But Kalli had realized that the turrets could actually function off only electricity. It just took them far too long to charge a shot.

The design was a pacification and building defence laser design, it wasn’t intended to deal with entire crowds. The usage scenario for it generally involved having armed soldiers or security nearby.

The points were adding up fast, Kalli realized.

With the extra wall distance of a star fort, and then the additions that she wanted, she was going to have to cut out the secondary row of laser turrets.

She didn’t have enough points.

That was a crazy thought, given that they were nearly finished turning in all the quests for the day, and she was probably over cap again. She had missed the message, but simple math said that she had to be.

Eliminate the second row of lasers along the wall, leave them with just one row. That saved a lot of points, but Kalli knew that the lasers were quickly becoming obsolete as all the heroes got progressively larger bonuses.

Still, she didn’t want to leave the wall completely bare.

Sixteen then. One for each face so every surface of the wall was in range of a laser.
