Reincarnated With The Degenerate System

Chapter 279: Taking Everything Back Part 4

(Because I know the minds of this world’s original inhabitants. I have listened to them for years.

Every thought leaves behind a pattern. Every memory. Every instinct.)

"You’re awfully talkative. Just answer my question directly."

(Yours does not belong here. Your wavelength is wrong for this place. Stronger. Whole in a way nothing native to this world is whole.)

"You’re answer is much boring that I thought.:" I let the spear come off my shoulder, lightning already threading down the shaft in lazy arcs.

"Show me your best." The pressure in the chamber climbed a notch as my Qi leaked out past whatever restraint I usually kept on it.

She laughed. Not at me — at the idea.

(I have none to show.)

I blinked. "...What?"

(I am not built for violence. I coordinate. I evolve what’s beneath me. Others exist to end things.)

Cold ran down my spine before the sentence finished landing.

I spun without thinking, spear cutting a crescent of blue-white light through empty air.

Nothing there.

Two hundred meters back, at the mouth of the chamber, something had arrived without announcing itself — no footsteps, no displaced air, nothing my senses had bothered to register until it simply existed.

It looked like a deep-sea horror bred with something that used to have a shell.

Its arms and legs were long, ending in black, hooked claws instead of fingers and toes. A thick, segmented tail swayed lazily behind it, dragging across the floor and leaving a trail of emerald slime that hissed wherever it touched stone.

The head was where the illusion of humanity ended. It resembled a grotesque fusion of a man and an anglerfish. Its elongated face was split by a mouth that stretched unnaturally wide, lined with countless needle-like teeth.

Four compound eyes, arranged in two vertical pairs, glowed with a cold blue light devoid of emotion. From its forehead extended two slender antennae that drifted through the air, twitching ever so slightly.

Folded against its back, wings that caught the light like glass.

The pressure coming off it made every alien I’d fought on the way in feel like ants.

It opened its mouth and asked, "Are you the king of the...?"

I didn’t wait for an answer. The floor came apart under me as I closed the distance in less time than the sound of my own movement.

The spear screamed in.

It caught the blade on a single claw.

Lightning detonated across its arm, the ground beneath it caving from the shockwave — and the creature didn’t move. Not an inch.

"Well," I said. "I didn’t expect this to happen. I’m pretty sure this is the part where some epic music starts playing... but then again, there’s no one around to farm aura from."

Its eyes narrowed. Muscle bunched under chitin. It shoved, and the force that came off it hit like a collapsing building. I let it throw me. The moment my feet found the ground again I was already moving back in.

Spear Art — Moonlight Dragon Fang Flash.

The spear blurred, one thrust folding into the next, ten, then fifty, then more than I was counting, each one aimed somewhere that should have ended things.

It’s arms turned into afterimages, meeting every strike .

Metal screamed against carapace, over and over, sparks pooling into a kind of storm.

"So you can keep up."

It didn’t answer. The tail came around instead, and I ducked under it in time to watch it punch through a stone pillar thick enough to hold up a city block. The debris hadn’t finished falling before I’d already spun back in.

Spear Art — Moonlight Dragon Lightning spiral.

The charge wrapped the spear into a drill of blue current. It crossed both arms to take it, and the impact opened the chamber up like a struck bell — light, then noise, then the wet sound of something tearing.

It slid back. Green blood hissed against the floor like acid finding purchase.

"Finally," I said.

It looked down at the wound. Then the wound closed.

"...Of course it does. Since when do boss aliens not regenerate?"

It vanished again. My instincts screamed a half-second before my eyes caught up — above — and I thrust upward into a claw that was already falling. The collision threw us apart.

Before I’d finished landing I pulled a breath in, and let the Qi behind it turn to heat.

"Flame God’s Breath. Inferno."

Fire rolled outward and swallowed the chamber whole, hot enough that the cells started to weep. It disappeared into it without a sound.

I didn’t give it room to reappear. Wind gathered around the spear — once, twice, three turns — and the air folded inward on itself.

Spear Art — Moonlight Dragon Tempest Overload.

The spear came down.

Fire met wind and stopped being either one. A pillar of rotating destruction tore through what was left of the walls, cells turning liquid at the edges, anything caught inside shredded by blade-thin air while it burned from the inside out.

The cyclone tightened. Its rotation climbed until the flame inside it burned white, until the air itself started to catch.

For a few seconds, nothing should have survived that.

Then a sound came out of it that didn’t belong to anything I’d fought yet — a roar that cracked the storm apart from the inside, and a blur of emerald tore through the flame toward me faster than the noise of its own arrival.

I barely got the spear up in time.

CLANG!

The impact folded the air. Every bone from my wrists to my shoulders complained at once, and I went through three walls before I found the floor again, blood in my mouth.

I wiped it away with my thumb and smiled anyway.

"Now we’re talking."

Lightning climbed back up my arms. Behind me, the hive’s walls groaned under the damage already done.

Ahead, it pulled itself out of the wreckage of its own fire — shell cracked, smoke lifting off it, green blood dripping steady onto stone that hadn’t finished cooling.

Neither of us had gained anything yet.
