It’s Friday morning.

Two whole days since Adrian fled the Blackwood mansion. Nyra almost went to the condo to drag him back home herself. Almost.

But Julian refused to drive her there when she explained to him exactly what happened.

"Give him time." Julian had said. "He’s still learning to fully control the Enigma. I think you should let him cool off."

"But it’s been two days!"

"And the wolf almost hurt you!" He countered immediately, making her snap her mouth shut.

Nyra didn’t realize she had grown so used to Adrian’s presence until he left. And now she realizes how badly she misses his late-night chatter, his scent, the way he would cuddle her all night even when she chases him off.

He has checked up on her a few times through calls, but it’s not enough. She wants him to come back home...

"What are you doing here?" A familiar voice questions, making her look up.

Nyra is stunned to realize she’s now standing in the senior’s building. She didn’t even realize she had walked in here.

"Are you deaf?" The voice asks again, making her turn to the girl standing there with her hands crossed across her chest.

Angel. She is shifting from leg to leg, the corner of her lips curved downward.

Nyra frowns at the sight of her. What is her problem now?

Nyra decides to ignore her and just swerve past her, but the girl blocks her way again. "You’re a junior, what are you doing here?"

"What’s your business?" Nyra snaps back. "You’re just a first-year senior, who are you to tell me what to do!?"

Angel stomps in anger like a child. "Just because you’re Adrian’s mate doesn’t mean you can talk to me like that!"

"Then get out of my way." Nyra retorts, already frustrated. "I don’t have time for this." She mutters, turning to the other side, but the girl blocks her for the third time.

"Why are you acting so special now!? Don’t forget that before you became Adrian’s mate, you were nothing."

Someone’s been clearly feeding this witch information.

"And you even stole him from your sister, so why are you suddenly trying to keep him away from me!?"

Who the fuck is this delusional bitch, Nyra mutters under her breath, fuming. She hasn’t heard anyone side with Anna for months now, and hearing it from this girl makes her blood boil.

"Don’t you dare talk about her around me!" Nyra warns sternly. "And if Adrian is staying away from you, that’s because he doesn’t want you. You should learn to read the room and stop being so desperate!"

Before she can finish the last word, the girl slaps her hard across the face.

Oh no. No, she did not. Nyra is completely done being the girl everyone in this pack bullied.

Especially not this newcomer.

The girl smiles smugly to herself at the hand marks on Nyra’s face, but it quickly fades when Nyra grabs her hair and yanks it hard.

Her wolf’s quiet voice is rumbling with anger inside her. "How dare this ordinary Omega raise her hand on us!" Her wolf rumbles in anger.

The girl is shocked at Nyra’s strength as she’s thrown against the wall with so much force that she falls into the dustbin placed against the wall.

The sound attracts onlookers who are shocked to see the future Luna pushing the new girl.

Once she sees people standing there, she immediately starts crying. "Everyone look at what she’s doing to me? Just because she’s future Luna, does that give her the right to bully a new student!?"

Nyra rolls her eyes at them, not bothering to explain herself. If they want to believe that witch, they can do that. She doesn’t care.

She dusts her hand, shoots the girl one last warning glare, before storming off toward the lounge Adrian usually eats during lunch.

When she gets there, the news has already reached the guys. John gives her a high five, and the other guys cheer her on.

They tell her Anna has been coming constantly to their lounge to look for Adrian, and when she didn’t see him, she accused Nyra of badmouthing her to him.

Nyra chuckles at the irony. If only the girl knew she has also not been able to see Adrian for two days now.

And even now, he’s not there.

Nyra sighs, feeling exhausted. She thought he would at least come to the academy today and take shifting lessons with her.

But apparently, not.

---

The academy is packed before the sun even fully breaks.

Every third-year junior has been summoned for the senior examinations, and the usually noisy hallways are filled with nervous students.

Some wolves are whispering last-minute answers to their friends, while others sit quietly, struggling to calm their nerves.

Nyra is sitting between Lena and Naya, her fingers nervously brushing over the examination tag pinned to her uniform.

001.

Mr Philip gave her the number on purpose, saying the future Alpha and Luna always got the first numbers.

Well, curse that tradition then.

She takes a deep breath. Today determines if she’s going to be shamed in front of everyone. Or if, by some miracle, she scales through.

Her phone beeps, another message from Adrian cheering her on. She ignores it as she has been doing since morning.

She doesn’t want over-the-phone support. She wants him here. With her. Assuring her that everything is going to turn out okay.

"Everyone has their examination tags?" Mr Philip asks from the front of the classroom, cutting off the loud chatter in the hallway.

A loud chorus of yeses fills the room.

He calls out his list, making sure everyone is in their appointed seat, before he starts.

"Make sure those tags remain visible throughout the examination. They will be scanned before every section. If your tag is missing, you will not be allowed to continue."

Nyra looks down at hers again. 001. She’s not even going to be seated close to her friends; they are in the back while she sits in the front.

Frustration is an understatement right now.

"Alright," Mr Philip says, picking up the stack of papers on his desk. "We’ll begin with the theory examination."

The papers are passed around until everyone has one. "Do not turn them over until I tell you. Anyone caught cheating will repeat the junior year."

Many students start gossiping amongst themselves, but you can hear the nervousness in their voices.

"Okay, that’s enough." He shouts, cutting the noise. "Now you can start."

Nyra flips her paper and looks down at the first question. Her eyebrows immediately pull together.

What the hell? These questions are much different than the usual academy questions.

It is mostly pack history questions, the kind that only people with deep werewolf knowledge can answer.

Okay. Calm down. Calm down.

She tries to remember what Adrian taught her. He said some deep things about pack history, if only she can just try to remember them.

But after ten minutes, she remembers nothing. It’s like her brain is completely blocked.

"Fuck," she whispers under her breath. "I’m completely fucked!"

Now she’s fully panicking. Her legs are shaking under the table, and her eyes are stinging with unshed tears now.

She read, but she...just can’t remember anything. It’s been twenty minutes now, and if she doesn’t write anything, she’ll fail.

She needs to remember what she revised. Please.

Nyra forces herself to breathe and starts writing whatever she can remember.

Across the room, Mr Philip catches two boys whispering and exchanging a small sheet of paper.

He frowns and points at the two of them from the front. "You two, stand up!"

Everyone turns to face them. Nyra recognizes one of them, Thomas, one of the guys Ronan had paid to drug her months ago.

Thomas is frowning and continues to deny doing anything. "I don’t know what you’re talking about." He argues.

Mr Philip, frustrated, just grabs both their papers. "Leave the class now!"

Thomas scowls, but stops arguing. Instead, he glares at someone sitting behind him. Nyra follows his gaze to Leah, who is also staring back at him defiantly.

"This is all your fault." He mouths to her, flashing his middle finger. "I’ll deal with you after this." He threatens her.

Leah? What did she do?

"I said out!" Mr Philip yells in an authoritative voice, making all the other students flinch.

Thomas kisses his teeth, grabs his things and storms out, slamming the door behind him.

The other boy also storms out after him.

She watches them leave, wondering what Leah did that made Thomas threaten to deal with her.

"Twenty minutes left." Mr Philip’s voice pulls her back into reality.

Okay, shit. Shit.

Nyra draws in a deep breath, looking back down at her paper. She has managed to answer ten questions, with ten questions remaining.

She closes her eyes and slowly calls forth for her wolf.

"I know you’re listening," Nyra says to herself. "Please, I need your help. I can’t remember anything."

Her wolf is silent for a few seconds, and it almost feels like she’s all alone in the hall.

But then finally her wolf sighs, like it’s frustrated with its owner.

"I tried to tell you not to collect the water from that student, but you refused to listen. Now look." It responds angrily.

Wait-- two unfamiliar students had approached her before the examination, wishing her luck. They had handed her a bottle of water and some snacks.

She drank the water, but gave the snacks to the girls to share.

Is that why she can’t remember!? But what about the snacks they ate? What if it’s affecting them too?!

"It’s just you." The wolf answers even without her asking. "But don’t worry, I’ll help you."

Nyra glances at the clock. Twelve minutes left...

"Follow my lead." It says again, and Nyra nods, grabbing her pencil.
