The following week, the family business continued smoothly. By now, the other fruit sellers had come to realize that they could no longer reach Evelyn’s level anymore.

Many had tried copying their market tactics, but very few succeeded. As for those who failed, they received a backlash as their sales plummeted.

Evelyn and Ethan paid no heed to this, though. They simply minded their business, attending to their customers dutifully.

Having sold half of the bulk fruits in the other shop, Ethan came to Evelyn’s side to assist her.

The white-haired lady smiled at him. "We’re really doing great because of you, honey."

He smiled back and pinched her cheek. "Really? I’d say more customers come because of your charisma. Customers don’t like sellers with terrible personality."

Evelyn pursed her lips but didn’t deny it.

From behind them, Nora approached and tugged at his trousers.

"Dad... I want to eat something."

Ethan turned to her, a little surprised. "Oh, and what’s that?"

Puffing her cheeks cutely, she answered, "I don’t know yet. Let’s look around."

Ethan obediently nodded and turned to Evelyn.

"Welps, looks like you’ll be by yourself for a while. Daddy’s girl needs him."

Evelyn laughed and punched his arm. "Just go already. Don’t take too long."

He nodded and left the shop with Nora.

Half an hour later, the father-daughter duo returned to the shop with the little girl looking satisfied.

"Here, we got this for you," Nora said as she handed a packet of grilled steak to her mother.

Evelyn smiled warmly and accepted it. "Thank you, sweetie."

While Ethan sent Nora back into the shop to play with her toys, he took out his phone and answered a call.

"Hello? Oh... I see."

After a few minutes of talking, he dropped the call and turned to Evelyn. "Hm, Cole’s boss wants to see me for some advice. Do you think I should go?"

Evelyn looked at him, puzzled. "Why shouldn’t you? That’s Cole’s boss! The CEO of a company, Ethan."

He shrugged and pointed at the other shop that still needed his attention.

"I still have fruits that I haven’t sold. Perhaps I should just postpone the meeting."

Evelyn’s eyes widened and she hurriedly stopped. "Wait! Wait! Wait! You can’t do that. You should just go. I’ll manage the two shops."

Ethan hesitated, then slowly nodded. "Alright. I’ll try to finish quickly and come back early."

Evelyn smiled, satisfied. "Start going already, will you?"

He didn’t leave immediately. He went into the shop and gave Nora a hug. Then, he came back and pulled Evelyn into a hug.

"Ugh. Just go, Ethan."

She said grumpily despite the smile on her face as she hugged him back.

"Alright, alright."

He rolled his sleeves and headed to the junction to board a taxi. Buying a car wasn’t really important for him at the moment. After all, he used to have the most luxurious cars in his era—far better than the current ones in this era.

For some reason, he found peace in something as mundane as boarding a taxi.

While he headed to the meeting point, Evelyn quickly finished eating the grilled steak and returned to selling. The other shop managed by Ethan was temporarily closed, and if a customer appeared to buy in bulk, she could attend to them by herself.

As she watched a customer depart, Evelyn caught sight of her good friend approaching.

"Cassie!" She smiled warmly.

The black-haired lady smiled back and gave her a hug. "How’re you doing? Your business has really bloomed, hasn’t it?"

Evelyn laughed lightly. "Of course, it has. Ethan is really... I don’t know how I can thank him."

Cassie’s eyes flashed with coldness, but Evelyn didn’t notice. She glanced behind Cassie and saw a familiar schoolgirl approaching.

"Give me a moment to attend to her."

Cassie nodded and entered the shop. "I’ll go play with Nora, then. I brought snacks for her."

Evelyn didn’t think much of it and nodded. "Alright, alright. Stop trying to make me jealous."

The two women laughed and turned away from each other.

While Evelyn attended to the girl who had tried hitting on Ethan several days ago, Cassie approached Nora and gave her the snacks.

Nora eyed her suspiciously but still opened the packet and ate.

"Hey, why do you love mermaids that much?" Cassie asked curiously as she sat beside her and ate from her own snacks.

Nora thought about the question seriously and answered, "That... it’s because mermaids can explore the sea and are always free. Swimming from sea to sea looks nice."

Cassie smiled. "That’s a beautiful thought. But don’t you think it’s sad that they can’t climb onto land?"

"They can’t?" Nora blinked in surprise. "I thought mermaids could grow legs and climb onto land."

Cassie shook her head and explained. "Not really... it’s just in some stories that they do. Actual mermaids only have fish-like tails for swimming."

Nora nodded slowly. It was indeed true, as there were several myths about mermaids. The most common trait was their fish-like tail.

’I guess mermaids can’t climb onto land, then,’ She thought, then sighed with a frown.

Her chest felt tight, and she found it a little difficult to breathe. She ignored the feeling and drank some water.

However, the feeling persisted, and she could feel it worsening.

"Ah... ah..."

Her eyes widened when she realized what was happening. Her asthma had been triggered! It had been many years since it had last happened, so she didn’t even realize it immediately.

The moment she did, she began to panic.

Cassie noticed and immediately turned to her. "Nora, are you okay?"

The girl shook her head, unable to speak.

The black-haired lady’s expression immediately changed to one of concern, and she immediately carried her to Evelyn.

"Eve, your daughter isn’t breathing properly!"

Evelyn’s head whipped around, and seeing the struggling expression on Nora’s face, her heart tightened in worry.

"Asthma...?" She gasped. "Quick! Help me close the shop. I’m taking her to the hospital right away. You call Ethan for me and tell him about this."

Cassie nodded hurriedly, her expression filled with genuine concern. She genuinely wished nothing bad happened to the child.

While Evelyn rushed to the street to board a taxi, Cassie stayed behind and hastily closed the shop. She also wanted to follow them to the hospital.

Once she was done, she headed out of the market quickly while taking out her phone to call someone. Instead of calling Ethan, she chose to call Chris instead.

Her plan needed him to be present. Otherwise, everything would be meaningless.
