"I wonder how Evangeline will react when I tell her what I found," Maximilian grinned to himself as he entered the pagoda. "She might jump in excitement and give me a big kiss—"
Bam!
The moment he set foot in the front yard of the palace, a shoe landed on his cheek, snapping his head to the side as the impact rippled through his skin.
"You finally remembered that you have a home to return to, My Lord?" A sharp voice came from the palace, sending shivers down Maximilian’s spine.
Maximilian grabbed his jaw and moved it back into place as he took a nervous gulp. Being excited about finding the control room of the spaceship, he had completely forgotten that he had been away for more than a month without sending Evangeline a single update.
’S-she is furious,’ he gasped as he took another nervous step forward. "Vivi, I haven’t seen you for so many days. Won’t you come out and meet me?"
No reply came from inside. However, there was no attack either. Maximilian just needed to court her a little more.
"Wouldn’t you even ask me what I have gone through all this time?" The moment he said those words, the front doors of the palace suddenly opened, a trail of blue lightning bolting outside. In the blink of an eye, Evangeline stood before Maximilian, one foot bare.
Her hands quickly moved around his face and arms, checking for any visible injuries. There were none, except for the reddened cheek from the shoe attack he had just suffered.
"I’m physically fine, Vivi," Maximilian said to ease her worries. He placed her palm against his chest as he continued, "I was talking about my heart that was missing you dearly."
Evangeline’s blue eyes snapped toward Maximilian. "S-stupid Lord," she muttered, her voice breaking as her eyes turned moist. "I was scared to death. You didn’t even send any update about your well-being."
Her breath came in short, heavy gasps as she rubbed her moist eyes. "I-I th-thought something happened to you."
Maximilian’s eyes widened as his gaze fell upon her injured arm. A dark energy was eating away at her wounds.
He instantly grabbed her wrist and absorbed the death energy from her injuries.
"Th-this is..." he asked.
"I tried to venture deeper to find you..."
Maximilian didn’t need any further explanation about what had followed. He moved closer and pulled her into a tight embrace. "You silly girl, why would you do something so dangerous? Don’t you know I have numerous life-saving treasures with me? Even an Eternal Sage cannot hurt me deeply."
Evangeline didn’t say anything anymore. She simply kept sobbing, holding the robe at his chest tightly with both hands.
---
"So you found the part of the artifact that brought us to Vyoman?" Evangeline gasped as Maximilian explained the reason for his sudden absence.
"Y-yes," Maximilian replied, completely flustered. "V-Vivi, why won’t you sit at my side?"
They were inside Maximilian’s bedroom, on his bed. She was sitting between his legs, her back resting against his chest while he leaned against the bedrest.
"I don’t wish to be away from you," Evangeline declared. She looked back at him over her shoulder and asked with puffed cheeks, "Am I bothering you, My Lord?"
"O-of course not," Maximilian shook his head.
"Then why won’t you hold me?" she asked, her brows knitting together as she seemed on the verge of tears again.
He instantly placed both hands on her abdomen from behind, pulling her closer to him. ’What happened to the cold, scary Vivi?’ he gasped inwardly. ’When did she become so adorable and needy?’
Evangeline slowly turned in his embrace, facing Maximilian, her serene face making his heart skip a beat from a single glance. "My Lord, I have a bold request."
"Say the word, Vivi."
Evangeline’s eyes lowered, a faint rosy hue forming on her cheeks. "May I sleep with you tonight?"
Her question left Maximilian with his lips parted. Without him even saying a word, Evangeline already received her answer from how loudly his heart was beating at her request.
"B-but you cannot do vulgar things," she hissed, pointing at him with her index finger.
"I will try," Maximilian said, nodding firmly.
He turned off the lamp at the bedside. The only light inside the room came from the moonlight entering through the window, accompanied by a cold breeze.
"The wind is so cold," Evangeline murmured. "I should close the window."
She was about to rise, but Maximilian pressed her shoulders with both hands, making her sit again. "It’s alright. I can keep you warm."
As they sat face to face, his golden eyes met her blue ones. Maximilian slowly leaned closer, the moon outside the window gradually disappearing from view between them.
"M-my Lord, you agreed not to do anything vulgar," Evangeline whispered, pressing her index and middle fingers against his lips.
"I won’t," he replied, kissing her fingers before moving down onto the bed. "Get some rest. I will take you to the control room tomorrow. There is a gift there waiting for you to claim."
Evangeline silently looked at Maximilian, a hint of disappointment lingering in her eyes. "I understand."
She lay down on the opposite side of the bed, turning her face away from him.
’Th-that was close,’ Maximilian gasped, holding his chest. ’If she hadn’t stopped me, I would have really lost control again. I cannot rush things.’
He had just hardened his resolve when Evangeline called out to him, still lying with her back turned toward him. "My Lord."
"Yes?"
"I am cold."
Maximilian wasn’t an idiot. He knew exactly what she meant. He pulled the blanket from the edge of the bed and covered her up to her shoulders.
’What was I even expecting?’ Evangeline sighed inwardly. ’Am I not appealing in My Lord’s eyes?’
She was thinking those words while having just rejected the advances Maximilian had made toward her. Perhaps what she wanted wasn’t anything explicit, but something more intimate.
’Please embrace me, My Lord,’ she whimpered inwardly. ’I’m still cold—’
Her thoughts came to an abrupt stop as a hand gently pressed against her stomach from behind. A soft gasp escaped her lips from the sudden touch, sending jolts through her entire body.
"Good night, baby," Maximilian whispered into her pointed ear, her contracted wings pressing against his chest.
She turned around and rested her head on one of his arms while his other arm remained wrapped around her back.
She kissed him on the forehead before lowering her face toward his chest. "Good night, My Lord."
