"Vivi, I’m back," Maximilian announced as he entered the control room. "Look what I found..."
His words slowly trailed off when he realised Evangeline was too busy to respond.
She sat where the large sphere and core of the control room had once been. All of its silver material had transformed into multiple displays that hovered around the seat where Evangeline sat, scrolling through them and writing something down in her notes with a brush.
Following Maximilian, Wukong entered the control room and complained, "Sister-in-law, Brother Max tricked me and took my foo—"
"Shh, she is busy," Maximilian said, covering his mouth.
The duo settled down in the corner of the room, waiting for Evangeline to sort out whatever she was working on.
An hour later, the multiple screens were absorbed into the seat, turning it back into the shape of the sphere.
"Hah... All the preparations have been completed," Evangeline released a tired sigh, stretching her arms and spreading her wings to loosen them.
"Are you done?" Maximilian’s voice came from behind.
Hearing his voice instantly brought a smile to her face. She rose from the seat and flew towards him at lightning speed, only stopping after reaching his arms.
"When did you come back, My Lord?" she asked, moving behind him and hugging him from the back. Her chin rested on his shoulder, her feet still suspended in the air because of their height difference, supported by her wings.
"While you were busy with AINOS," Maximilian chuckled, patting her head. "You have been working hard lately. Have you finished studying the artifact?"
"Unh." Evangeline nodded, her arms wrapping around his neck and her legs locking around his waist as her chest pressed against his back. "How about you?"
"I defeated the nine-headed lion today," Maximilian boasted, his head rising with pride.
"We defeated the nine-headed lion," Wukong corrected him with a retort, his brows furrowed in anger. "And I was also taken advantage of."
Evangeline moved down from Maximilian’s back and approached Wukong.
"What happened, Wukong?" she asked, leaning closer to him with a warm smile.
Wukong explained how Maximilian had tricked him, his black eyes almost turning teary.
"Here, you can eat this," Evangeline said, taking out a couple of dark cores from her storage pouch and handing them to Wukong.
"O-oh, thank you, Sister-in-law," Wukong said, accepting the cores. His face brightened as he carefully placed them in one of the chambers before going into meditation to digest some of the energy he had devoured during the battle.
She turned to Maximilian and nagged, with one hand resting on her waist, "How could you steal the food from a child, My Lord?"
"Does he look like a child to you?" Maximilian shrugged, crossing his arms defensively.
"He has only recently gained sentience," Evangeline explained. "He only has the mind of a four- or five-year-old. Do you not feel guilty for tricking him?"
Maximilian could not come up with any valid excuse. Nonetheless, he did not feel any shame either. Wukong had already devoured so much of the death beam released by the lion. He was being greedy, asking for the body as well when he had already had his fill for several weeks.
"By the way, where did you get those cores?" Maximilian asked, changing the topic. "They seem to be Rank Six death demons."
"They were formed by the Control Room," Evangeline revealed. "When it drained the death energy from the room, it compressed them into these spears to throw out, but I extracted them. I thought they might come in handy if you fell short. But that doesn’t seem to be the case, so I gave them to him."
Maximilian was surprised by this unique feature of AINOS. If not for Evangeline, he would have never known that the control room was capable of doing something like that. It only made him realise how incredible Evangeline was, who also happened to be his wife.
He moved closer to her and picked her up from under her arms until her face was parallel to his.
"M-my Lord, don’t pick me up like a child," Evangeline hissed, her blue eyes lowering to the floor.
"It has been so long since I embraced you," Maximilian murmured, his eyes fixed on her serene figure.
She extended her arms towards him and said with a slight blush on her face, "I also wish to hold you."
He moved her closer to him, holding her gently in his arms as if she were the most precious and delicate thing in the world. One of his arms held her firmly by the thighs, not letting her feet touch the floor.
"My Lord, let me show you what I found after recharging AINOS," she whispered, rubbing her soft cheek against his. "Take me to the core."
"Oh, so it’s finally time," Maximilian said excitedly as he slowly flew towards the hovering sphere.
As they settled on the seat with Evangeline sitting on his lap, she began, her back pressed against his chest, "We have only one month remaining before the seven clans begin searching for us. Even this place, as hidden as it is, would eventually be found if the Clan Heads personally decide to make a move. We cannot even attempt to break through to the next realm here because if we get disturbed during cultivation, we might get crippled. This is why I decided to halt my cultivation and find some method to make sure we aren’t discovered."
She raised her head, looking into Maximilian’s eyes as he silently listened to her. "My Lord, what do you think is the most suitable method for that?"
"To go deeper into the Riftlands, where not even the Divine Dragons could enter," Maximilian gave the obvious answer.
"Precisely," Evangeline nodded.
With a beckoning gesture, she moved the hovering display closer to her. On the blue screen was a diagram of a star-shaped, octagonal structure. It resembled a plus sign superimposed over a cross, with the four arms of the plus sign extending farther than the diagonal ones. All eight arms were connected by a circular ring.
"What is this?" Maximilian asked, confused.
Evangeline zoomed into the centre of the structure. Now that it was expanded, Maximilian was shocked by how detailed it was. After expanding it several times, the screen zoomed into a room at the centre of the structure.
Maximilian’s eyes widened as he recognised the room. It was awfully similar to the control room where they were sitting. Before he could ask anything, Evangeline revealed,
"This is the spaceship in which the dragons and phoenixes arrived at Vyoman. I have already located its location."
