[Army deployment will begin in seventy-two hours.]

The mechanical announcement repeated once before the captured weapon went silent.

No one celebrated their victory.

Three days were not enough to prepare for an army, especially one made up of zombies, aliens, and human traitors.

Still, they could not rush towards Tayi City immediately.

The villagers were injured. Hundreds of rescued captives were still inside Leng Pan’s space, and the surviving alien soldiers had to be restrained.

They also had two aircraft hovering above the village.

Lu Tao stared at them with excitement shining in his eyes.

"Can we bring them down now?"

Lu Zhen turned towards his younger brother.

"There is a zombie army preparing to move in three days."

"I know."

"Many people here could still die from parasites."

"I know that too."

"Then why are you looking so happy?"

Lu Tao pointed at the aircraft.

"Because we have two alien aircraft."

His answer was so reasonable that Lu Zhen could not argue with it.

Leng Pan chuckled.

"Let him be happy. We could use some good news."

"This is good news," Lu Tao insisted. "If we can control those things, we won’t have to drive through ruined roads anymore."

"We don’t know whether we can control them," Lu Hao said.

"We could learn."

"You cannot even read the symbols."

"We have captured aliens. One of them could teach us."

Lu Hao looked towards the fallen alien soldiers.

Most were unconscious, but a few were awake and pretending otherwise.

"I don’t think they will be eager to help."

"That is where persuasion comes in."

Everyone looked at Lu Tao.

"What?" he asked. "I wasn’t talking about torture."

"No one mentioned torture," Janna said.

"I know. I was making that clear."

"You only made yourself more suspicious."

Lu Tao decided to stop explaining.

The more he spoke, the worse it sounded.

Lu Zhen looked towards Assistant Yao.

"Can you check the aircraft?"

Assistant Yao nodded.

He had stayed near the vehicles during the fight to ensure the aliens did not steal or destroy them. With his speed, he had also moved several injured villagers away from danger without attracting much attention.

"I can examine them, but someone will need to cover me. We do not know whether the aircraft have automatic defence systems."

"Lu Hao will go with you," Lu Zhen said. "His lightning ability might interfere with the machines if something goes wrong."

Lu Hao stepped forward.

Lu Tao also raised his hand.

"I should go too."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because your arm is still bleeding."

Lu Tao looked down.

The wound had stopped bleeding some time ago, but the blood on his sleeve made it difficult to argue.

"I could change my shirt."

"That will not heal the injury."

"It might make it less obvious."

"Go and help Silk restrain the aliens."

Lu Tao sighed.

"Fine."

Assistant Yao and Lu Hao approached the smaller aircraft.

It hovered several metres above the ground, but there was no visible door or ladder.

Assistant Yao circled it once.

"How are we supposed to enter?"

"Maybe it can recognize the soldiers," Lu Hao said.

They looked towards one of the unconscious aliens.

A few minutes later, Assistant Yao returned with the soldier thrown over his shoulder.

He held the alien beneath the aircraft.

Nothing happened.

Lu Tao watched from a distance.

"Try lifting its hand!"

Assistant Yao lifted the alien’s hand.

A blue light swept across its palm.

The bottom of the aircraft opened.

A ramp extended towards the ground.

Lu Tao turned to his brother proudly.

"See? You should have let me go."

Lu Zhen ignored him.

Assistant Yao placed the alien on the ground and entered the aircraft with Lu Hao.

The ramp remained open.

"At least we know how to enter," Ouyang Jin said.

"Getting it to land might be harder," Leng Pan replied.

"We can worry about that later."

Ouyang Jin turned towards the alien prisoners.

The surviving soldiers had been stripped of their weapons and armour.

Without the silver suits, they looked surprisingly fragile. Their bodies were thin, and their almost transparent skin revealed dark veins beneath the surface.

Silk had tied their hands and feet.

She had also wrapped threads around their mouths after one of them tried to bite Blaze.

"They might have poison in their teeth," she said. "No one should put their hands near their mouths."

Blaze looked offended.

"I wasn’t planning to."

"You nearly punched one in the mouth."

"That is different."

"How?"

"My fist would have been near its mouth, not inside it."

Silk stared at him.

Blaze looked away.

There was no point in arguing over such small details.

The alien commander had escaped, but nine soldiers remained alive.

Six others had died during the battle.

Leng Pan did not feel guilty about their deaths. These aliens had come to capture her, steal the blue crystal, and take the villagers as experimental subjects.

They would have killed everyone if given the chance.

Still, the survivors could provide valuable information.

They might know where the other experiment sites were located and what the enemy had built beneath Tayi City.

"Place them in separate houses," Lu Zhen instructed. "No two prisoners should be kept together."

"If they can communicate mentally, separating them might not help," Sonny said.

"It will still make it harder for them to act together."

Ouyang Jin nodded.

"We should also search their bodies for tracking devices."

"Do that after we treat the villagers," Leng Pan said. "The parasites could become active again."

The villagers had gathered in front of the houses.

Many were conscious but confused.

They remembered attacking Leng Pan’s group, but some could not understand why they had done it.

Others remembered everything.

Mei Lin sat against a wall with a blanket around her shoulders.

Her face was pale, and she looked exhausted.

When she saw Leng Pan approaching, she tried to stand.

"Don’t get up," Leng Pan said.

Mei Lin remained seated.

"Are they gone?"

"Most of the parasites have been weakened, but some could still be inside your body."

Fear appeared in Mei Lin’s eyes.

"Could they control me again?"

"Not while I am here."

Leng Pan’s answer seemed to calm her.

"How many people drank the well water?" she asked.

"Everyone."

"What about Old Chen and Xiaoyu?"

"They stopped drinking it several months ago."

"Was there anyone else who refused?"

Mei Lin thought for a moment.

"A few people tried, but Chief Gao punished them. He locked them inside the house near his own."

"The guest house?"

Mei Lin nodded.

"They disappeared."

Leng Pan glanced at Chief Gao.

He sat on the ground inside the mist barrier. His head was lowered, but she knew he was listening.

Old Chen stood a short distance away.

Every time he looked at Chief Gao, anger filled his eyes.

If Leng Pan released the village chief, Old Chen might beat him to death with the wooden stool.

She could not say that he did not deserve it.

However, Chief Gao still had information they needed.

"Gather everyone in groups of ten," Leng Pan instructed. "Those who are unconscious should be placed separately. If anyone starts behaving strangely, call me immediately."

Mei Lin nodded.

She asked several villagers to help.

Some were too weak to stand, but those in better condition carried the injured into the open space near the houses.

Leng Pan took out the medicinal chocolates they had brought from the base.

Uncle Li and the researchers had created them to restore energy and promote healing.

They had not expected to use them on people infected with alien parasites, but the chocolates might help keep the villagers stable during purification.

Lu Zhen handed one to Mei Lin.

"Eat half."

Mei Lin stared at it.
