Rewriting My Fate in the Apocalypse
Chapter 515: Eliminating The Parasites"Chocolate?"
"Yes."
"Is this really the time to eat sweets?"
"It is medicine," Leng Pan explained. "Take half first. Eating too much might overwhelm your body."
Mei Lin carefully bit into it.
Her eyes widened.
"It tastes like normal chocolate."
"Medicine does not have to taste terrible," Leng Pan said.
She had always wondered why some people believed bitterness made medicine more effective.
Mei Lin finished half the piece.
Colour gradually returned to her face.
The energy inside the chocolate spread through her body and repaired some of the damage caused by the parasites.
Leng Pan placed a hand above her head.
"Close your eyes and relax."
Mist surrounded Mei Lin.
It entered her body slowly.
Leng Pan did not force the parasites out as she had done earlier. She weakened them one at a time, then guided them towards the least dangerous exit.
Mei Lin began coughing.
Several threadlike creatures came out of her mouth.
Lu Zhen burned them before they could touch the ground.
More parasites emerged through her nose and ears.
The process was uncomfortable, but Mei Lin remained still.
After several minutes, Leng Pan withdrew the mist.
"There are no active parasites left."
Mei Lin opened her eyes.
"Are they all gone?"
"I removed the ones I could detect. You will need to be examined again later."
"Thank you."
Her voice broke.
She covered her face and began crying.
No one told her to stop.
After what she had endured, crying could be considered a luxury.
Leng Pan moved to the next villager.
The treatment was slow.
Some people had only a few parasites inside their bodies. Others carried hundreds.
The worst cases belonged to those who had consumed the well water every day and absorbed many crystal cores.
The parasites were attracted to energy. Ability users had become their preferred hosts.
"Now we know why there are so few strong ability users in the village," Ouyang Jin said.
He was helping distribute the medicinal chocolate.
"Every time someone became stronger, the parasites probably consumed their energy."
"That would also explain why Chief Gao seemed healthier than everyone else," Silk replied. "The queen allowed him to keep more energy because he was useful."
Chief Gao raised his head.
"I didn’t know."
Old Chen gripped the stool.
"You knew enough."
"I thought the Mother was protecting us."
"You saw people disappear."
"I was trying to save the village."
"You were saving yourself!"
Old Chen moved towards him.
Ouyang Jin stepped between them.
"Not now."
"When, then?" Old Chen demanded. "After he finds another excuse?"
"He will answer for what he did," Ouyang Jin said. "But we need him alive until he tells us everything he knows about the aliens."
Old Chen’s chest rose and fell.
Eventually, he lowered the stool.
"I want to hear his confession."
"You will."
The treatment continued.
After examining more than twenty villagers, Leng Pan’s face began to pale.
Lu Zhen noticed immediately.
"Stop for a while."
"There are still many left."
"They will still be here after you rest."
"Some might not have that much time."
"Then drink some spiritual spring water."
Leng Pan looked at the villagers around them.
She could not take out the spring water openly.
Lu Zhen understood.
He turned towards the team.
"Continue distributing the chocolates. Panpan and I need to check the rescued captives."
No one questioned him.
They believed the captives were stored inside his space.
Lu Zhen led Leng Pan into the empty house they had used earlier.
He hung the black curtains around one corner of the room before she created a soundproof barrier.
They entered her space.
The moment they appeared inside, Leng Pan drank a cup of spiritual spring water.
The exhaustion gradually faded.
Lu Zhen still looked unhappy.
"You could have rested earlier."
"I was not going to collapse."
"That is not the standard we should use."
"What standard would you prefer?"
"You should stop before your face turns pale."
"If I stopped every time I became tired, we would never finish anything."
"You don’t have to do everything alone."
"I know."
Leng Pan reached out and held his hand.
"That is why I brought such a capable husband."
Lu Zhen’s expression softened.
"Flattery will not make me forget that you ignored your limits."
"Would a kiss work better?"
"It might."
Leng Pan moved closer and kissed his cheek.
"There."
Lu Zhen looked at her.
"That was too casual."
"We have hundreds of patients waiting."
"I suppose I could collect the rest later."
Leng Pan laughed and pushed him away gently.
"You are becoming shameless."
"I learned from my wife."
"I have never been shameless."
"Of course not."
His agreement was far too quick.
Leng Pan decided not to argue.
They walked towards the warehouse where the rescued captives had been placed.
Mist barriers separated the sacs.
The high concentration of energy inside the space had already helped some of them recover.
However, Leng Pan quickly noticed a problem.
Several captives were shaking.
The roots inside their bodies were dying, but the dead tissue was releasing a dark substance into their blood.
"They are being poisoned," she said.
She rushed towards the scarred man.
His breathing had become weak again.
Leng Pan purified the dark substance and fed him diluted spring water.
His condition improved, but hundreds of others would need the same treatment.
"We cannot take them out yet," Lu Zhen said. "The energy here is keeping them alive."
"We also cannot leave them unattended."
"Could Little Vine help remove the dead roots?"
Leng Pan considered it.
Little Vine had consumed the queen’s parasites without being harmed. It might be able to draw the remains from the captives without tearing their bodies.
She summoned it.
The vine appeared around her wrist.
It was still enjoying the energy gained from the queen’s parasites.
Leng Pan pointed towards the scarred man.
"Can you remove the dead roots inside him without hurting him?"
Little Vine extended a thin tendril.
It touched one of the wounds on the man’s arm.
After a moment, an extremely fine root entered the wound.
Lu Zhen watched closely.
"If it hurts him..."
Little Vine paused.
It turned towards Lu Zhen as if offended by the threat.
"He is only warning you," Leng Pan said. "Be gentle."
The tendril continued moving.
A few seconds later, it pulled back.
Several dead parasites and pieces of pale root came with it.
Little Vine absorbed them.
The scarred man’s breathing steadied.
"It works," Leng Pan said.
Little Vine raised its tendrils proudly.
"Don’t become too happy. There are hundreds of people here."
The vine looked around the warehouse.
Its tendrils slowly lowered.
For the first time, it seemed to understand the burden of being capable.
Leng Pan patted it.
"You don’t have to do everything at once."
Little Vine divided itself into several thinner branches and moved towards the nearest captives.
While it worked, Leng Pan inspected the scarred man again.
Most of the foreign material had been removed.
Only one hard object remained beneath the skin near his collarbone.
It did not resemble a parasite.
Leng Pan made a small cut and removed it.
A black metal chip fell into her palm.
Lu Zhen frowned.
"That looks alien."
"It could be a tracker."
The chip lit up.
A small hologram appeared above it.
The image showed the symbol of an eye.
Then several lines of text appeared.
[Human subject 372.]
[Control compatibility: forty-one percent.]
[Transfer destination: Tayi City.]
The scarred man opened his eyes.
When he saw the hologram, panic filled his face.
"No..."
Leng Pan leaned closer.
"What is it?"
The man grabbed her wrist weakly.
"They were going to take us there."
"To Tayi City?"
He nodded.
"That village was only the first step."
"What is happening in Tayi City?"
The man struggled to breathe.
"They are building an army."
"We know about the zombies."
"Not only zombies."
His grip tightened.
"People too."
Lu Zhen’s expression became serious.
"What people?"
The man looked between them.
"Soldiers."
"Whose soldiers?"
Before he could answer, the chip changed.
A photograph appeared in the hologram.
It showed a man in a military uniform standing beside the alien commander who had escaped.
The insignia on his chest was clearly visible.
Lu Zhen recognized it.
So did Leng Pan.
The scarred man pointed at the image.
"He was the one who delivered us to the aliens."
Leng Pan’s eyes became cold.
The uniform belonged to Commander Qiu’s faction.
