Chapter 492 - 464: The Car Broke Down

Chapter 492: Chapter 464: The Car Broke Down

The deeper they went, the higher the temperature rose.

Soon, it surpassed 60 degrees Celsius.

At this temperature, it would be difficult for a person to move around without a protective suit.

But for Fang Chenyi, this was clearly not an issue. Not only that, but even Vajra was still casually whistling at the scenery outside the window.

Forty kilometers. Thirty kilometers.

Fang Chenyi suddenly slammed on the brakes. Not far ahead, he could faintly make out several vehicles parked by the road.

He glanced down at the car’s temperature gauge. It was already close to 70 degrees Celsius.

The very air seemed to twist and distort from the heat.

Fang Chenyi had excellent eyesight, and the car was equipped with binoculars. He easily spotted a dozen or so people next to the convoy ahead, using various instruments to survey something. Every single one of them was wearing a heat-resistant isolation suit.

Clearly, they didn’t possess Fang Chenyi’s kind of power.

Nor did they have a Water Spirit Pearl like the one he held.

Thus, they could only wear isolation suits that made them look as bulky as bears.

Fang Chenyi wasn’t surprised to see people here.

After all, everyone was here for the Meteorite. On the contrary, he would have found it strange if there wasn’t anyone around.

Just as Fang Chenyi saw them, they also noticed his vehicle. Sneaking past them was obviously not an option.

So, Fang Chenyi simply drove over in a frank and open manner.

He had intended to just drive right past them. However, someone from the other group suddenly stepped out and held up a hand to stop him.

When they saw Fang Chenyi and a large gorilla without any protective gear, the men were all stunned, their faces etched with disbelief.

Even while wearing their climate-controlled thermal suits, they had to return to their vehicles to switch shifts every hour or two.

But this guy had come all the way here with no equipment at all. And he didn’t even seem to be affected much!

"Hey, buddy. You can’t go any further. If you keep going, the temperature will be at least 90 degrees. Neither of you has a protective suit on; you’ll definitely be in danger if you go in there. I know you’re probably here for that Meteorite, too. But I’d advise you not to risk your lives for a moment’s gain."

If it weren’t for the fact that Fang Chenyi was also one of the Huaxia People, the leader of the group wouldn’t have bothered with such a kind warning.

But obviously, such a warning was useless to Fang Chenyi. He smiled, nodded at the man, said, "Thanks," and then stomped on the gas. The Mengshi roared to life and sped off into the distance.

Staring at the departing Mengshi, the middle-aged man was clearly taken aback. He couldn’t believe the guy was still heading deeper in, even after his warning.

’Never mind whether the two of them can take it,’ he thought. ’Just his car alone definitely won’t be able to handle it if he drives any further.’

After all, even their specialized vehicles could only go another one or two kilometers deeper at most.

It was only because they couldn’t withstand the temperatures inside that they were forced to take measurements from here.

Back with Fang Chenyi, he kept his foot on the accelerator, the vehicle racing onward without a moment’s pause.

It wasn’t that he was arrogant or unwilling to talk to them; he just didn’t want to reveal too much information about himself.

Twenty-five kilometers to go. Temperature: 76 degrees Celsius.

Twenty kilometers to go. Temperature: 92 degrees Celsius.

As they drew closer to the center, the temperature was no longer rising slowly but seemed to be increasing exponentially. Noticing that Vajra was starting to sweat a little, Fang Chenyi couldn’t help but ask with some concern:

"How are you doing, Vajra? Can you still handle it?"

Hearing this, Vajra seemed to feel that his pride was on the line. He immediately threw his head back and resumed whistling as if nothing was wrong. However, the beads of sweat constantly rolling down his forehead proved that the big guy was, in fact, getting a little hot.

From Vajra’s comical act, Fang Chenyi could tell he could probably hold on for a while longer.

So, he stepped on the gas again and continued driving deeper.

POP!

Suddenly, a faint pop echoed inside the car. He looked down and saw that the interior thermometer had exploded from the high temperature, which gave Fang Chenyi a jolt.

He glanced at the map. There were still about a dozen kilometers left to the center—to be precise, somewhere between sixteen and seventeen. The temperature must have already exceeded 100 degrees Celsius.

The car’s thermometer wouldn’t have exploded if the temperature hadn’t surpassed 100 degrees Celsius.

Without the thermometer, Fang Chenyi could no longer sense the outside temperature.

Thanks to the Water Spirit Pearl, he still didn’t feel any heat at all.

In fact, the temperature around him felt perfectly comfortable.

Seeing Vajra pick up a water bottle and start drinking, Fang Chenyi started to worry about him.

BANG!

Another muffled bang rang out.

This time, however, the sound didn’t come from inside the car. The front passenger-side tire had just exploded.

The entire vehicle lurched violently to one side, and he instantly lost control of the steering.

Fang Chenyi quickly gripped the steering wheel, but at that exact moment, there was another bang. The driver-side tire blew out as well.

BANG! BANG!

Immediately after, two more explosions followed. The two rear tires had given out, too.

"Fuck. Does it have to be this brutal?"

Fang Chenyi was speechless. He slapped the steering wheel and unbuckled his seatbelt.

He called out to Vajra, and the man and the gorilla got out of the car. After checking the vehicle’s condition, it was obvious they couldn’t drive any further without tires.

’Looks like we’ll have to walk the rest of the way.’

Seeing the situation, Vajra anxiously scratched his head. He clearly understood that there would be no more car rides for the rest of the journey.

Fang Chenyi patted Vajra’s shoulder with a sigh of resignation.

"Old pal, we’re on the number 11 bus from here on out. Are you still up for it? If not, I can take you back first. If you are, then grab all the water from the car."

Vajra obviously knew the road ahead would be difficult. ’But I can’t lose face!’

So, he shot Fang Chenyi a look, put on an air of nonchalance, and then pulled open the car door. He slung the large water bottles from inside over his body and turned to be the first one to walk off.

After taking a few steps, he even remembered to turn back and bark a couple of times at Fang Chenyi, as if to say, ’Why aren’t you keeping up? You’re dragging me down!’

Fang Chenyi just smiled helplessly and shook his head, then followed closely behind Vajra.

It had to be said, both Fang Chenyi and Vajra were very fast on their feet. In fact, they weren’t much slower than the Mengshi itself...
