Rotting Land: Survive

Chapter 977: Chapter 962: Operation Corpse Extraction (10)

"Ah!" An ear-piercing scream shattered the serenity of the morning.

Even though the noise inside the kiln factory was loud enough, it still couldn’t drown out Li Zhong’s howl.

The explosive power of a person under the threat of death is imaginable; Li Zhong’s scream, fueled by terror to his core, was so clear that even Old Xu and others, several kilometers away, could hear it clearly through the static of the radio waves.

Something happened! That was the first reaction of Xu Renjie and others trapped in the school.

Lei Tong glanced at Old Xu, his face heavy: "It’s over! There must be problems outside."

Old Xu didn’t comment on Lei Tong’s assertion. He picked up the hand-held radio, anxiously asking: "Old Lin, Old Lin, what happened with that scream just now? Are you in trouble? Respond quickly! Respond quickly, over!"

But Old Xu didn’t get the expected response; Lin Junfu didn’t have the time to deal with his questions at that moment.

The "Jumper" perhaps didn’t expect there to be "delicious food" inside the vehicle, so its actions weren’t as swift as anticipated.

Like most predators facing prey, the "Jumper," confident of Li Zhong’s inability to escape, was slowly approaching the vehicle.

It wasn’t in a hurry to end Li Zhong, rather, it was thoroughly enjoying the moment.

But in contrast to the "Jumper’s" excitement, Li Zhong was almost scared to death.

His hands constantly fumbled around, his foot slightly raised, adopting a defensive posture.

However, the claustrophobia of the cramped space and his lack of combat experience made Li Zhong lose his momentum before the battle even commenced.

Momentum is crucial in a confrontation; as the saying goes, lose the person but not the stance. Once the momentum weakens, the outcome is apparent.

Therefore, it’s almost certain that Li Zhong is no match for the Jumper right now. Even though he reacted accordingly, it was merely his body’s instinctive response under extreme fear.

He must be saved! That was Lin Junfu’s immediate thought in his helplessness. Yet, the time needed to reach the truck would be enough for the ’Jumper’ to inflict a wound on Li Zhong.

However, if Li Zhong got hit by a blunt object, it wouldn’t matter much; being scratched by zombies... everyone knows, whatever species it is, getting scratched by zombies, even a tiny wound, means death.

No! To be precise, it’s worse than death.

First, you must endure physiological pain like high fever and convulsions during the mutation.

Then, you’ll go through the entire dying process.

Finally, you’ll be resurrected, carrying an unforgivable, lonely soul, wandering forever.

A dozen seconds of stand-off, Li Zhong’s panic kept agitating the "Jumper’s" heartstrings.

Finally, stirred by the bloodthirsty gene, it lost interest in continuing the hunter-prey game with Li Zhong. It turned around and started advancing inside the vehicle.

"Ah!" Yet another ear-piercing scream, the "Jumper’s" sudden advance brought pressure to Li Zhong alike.

He struggled to kick out with his right leg, trying to boot the creature out of the car. However, the cramped vehicle space and his awkward position made proper leverage impossible.

The creature almost took a bite of his legs a few times, causing Li Zhong’s already timid actions to become more hesitant.

It’s over! This time it’s really over! Li Zhong truly fell into despair.

Behind him lay thousands of walking dead, both sides blocked by the vehicle body, and in front was the "Jumper."

Simply put, Li Zhong had only two paths: either cower inside, offering himself exclusively to the Jumper.

Or, he could boldly open the door and present the zombie horde with a grand gift.

Nevertheless, being devoured by the creature was inevitable.

Yet, just when everyone thought Li Zhong was doomed, a large hand descended from the sky. Wang Qiang, like the War God incarnate, mounted the vehicle in just a few steps, yanked open the door, and forcefully pulled the "Jumper" out of the car.

The "Jumper," quite "dedicated," remained in a predator stance while being dragged, two corpse hands flat with sharp claws catching the eye.

Needless to say, being scratched by it would mean certain death or injury.

Unfortunately, the Jumper’s proud performance didn’t last long; after pulling its torso out of the vehicle, Wang Qiang raised a knife and cleanly severed its claws.

With a howl to the sky, perhaps feeling pain or anger from interrupted dining, it certainly acted furious.

Baring its teeth, it snarled at Wang Qiang, seemingly venting its dissatisfaction. As if saying: "Set me free, and let’s duel one-on-one!"

Wang Qiang fulfilled its wish. After chopping off its hands, he exerted force and directly threw the Jumper down from the vehicle.

Seeing the creature land, Wang Qiang lifted his right foot, then heavily stomped on its corpse. Afterward, he grabbed the riot shield by the vehicle side and repeatedly smashed it onto the creature’s head.

Once! Twice! Thrice!

After three blows, the once round head of the Jumper was a mess of flesh, brain matter, and unknown bits strewn across the ground, so horrifying it made one nauseous.

Wang Qiang remained extraordinarily calm, as if these things had nothing to do with him.

Turning around, his gaze fell on Li Zhong inside the car.

Li Zhong was clearly petrified, as even when the creature was pulled outside, he didn’t make a move to escape.

"Qiang, Qiangzi, are you okay!?" With urgency, Tang Xiaoquan jumped from the car after opening the door.

Wang Qiang didn’t answer, still eyeing the car’s interior: "It’s fine now, the zombie’s been dealt with. You should come out quickly."

No past arrogance, no extra words, Wang Qiang spoke indifferently to Li Zhong.

Once Li Zhong was safely at the back of the truck, Wang Qiang turned to Tang Xiaoquan, who was on guard: "Get in the car, we should leave. Otherwise, it’ll be very troublesome when they come out."

Though Wang Qiang’s excessive calmness and poise still put Tang Xiaoquan on edge, he rapidly returned to the vehicle under pressure from the situation.

Old Lin steadied his nerves; the earlier scare still made his heart race.

Without Wang Zhongyu’s masterful driving skills, Old Lin had a hard time turning the vehicle around.

Meanwhile, several more "Jumpers" dashed from the car during his turnaround delay.

Truly persistent souls!!

Watching the pursuing "Jumpers" in the rearview mirror, Lin Junfu’s gaze tightened, his right foot pressing down on the accelerator. The Jianghuai truck sped up, blasting out thick exhaust and shooting towards the highway.

Zombies are still zombies; even after evolving, they only adapt their body shells somewhat.

Though they might slightly outperform humans in physical capabilities, compared to machines, they’re undoubtedly incomparable.

As expected, the Jianghuai truck left the trailing "Jumpers" behind. Determined there was no longer a pursuer, Old Lin grabbed the hand-held radio to connect with Hu Xiaodong. (To be continued.
