Chapter 978: Chapter 963: Operation Lure the Corpses (11)
"Xiao Hu, I’m coming over to pick you up right away."
"Received!!"
With that, Lin Junfu shouted again, "Old Xu, I’ll get to you in 8 minutes."
The sounds from the hand-held radio clearly reached the ears of the trapped team members in the teaching building. Derek excitedly kissed Demmi on the cheek: "Dear, we’re saved."
He felt a heartfelt sense of gratitude for his initial decision; it was worth noting that Derek had once doubted Xu Renjie’s plan. He even considered reporting them in exchange for benefits.
But his moral compass ultimately curbed his sinister thoughts, and in return, fate showed him the real meaning of goodness being rewarded.
Compared to the young people’s excitement, the soldiers of the Sharp Blade Company appeared relatively calm.
Especially Old Xu, who showed not a bit of excitement or joy. Instead, the gravity on his face hadn’t lessened, if anything, it intensified.
It’s understandable. Lin’s call meant the final phase was beginning. On his shoulders rested the life and death of these dozen team members.
Just this was enough to make Old Xu cautious, not to mention the breakout path ahead was anything but smooth.
Let’s not forget, even though the outside team had managed to lure away ninety percent of the zombies, the remaining ten percent were still enough to give Old Xu a headache.
No matter how it turned out, at this point, the heavens had already shown exceptional favor to the survivors.
Old Xu was not the kind of man to back down at the slightest difficulty. Throughout his life, he mostly lived to solve various problems.
"Xiaoxin, Lei Tong, Hua Biao, you three go clear the roadblocks at the door. Demmi, you go bring the girls. Derek, come with me to see Lina."
He quickly gave instructions; the time Lin left for Old Xu was only 8 minutes, so every second counted for him now.
The survivors moved immediately upon receiving orders, while Old Xu followed Derek to the "residence" to meet Zhao Lina.
Since the first day seeing Zhao Lina in a feverish coma, Old Xu had been too busy with major actions to pay attention.
Even Derek and Demmi hadn’t told Lina about her father’s situation due to Old Xu’s instructions.
Once inside the room, Zhao Lina had already dressed as per Demmi’s request.
After two days of recovery, her fever had mostly subsided, but suffering from illness and previous days of hunger had left her looking extremely weak.
Seeing her like this, Old Xu’s dark complexion immediately turned tense, and his two sword-like eyebrows knitted together involuntarily.
"Xiao Na, how are you feeling? Can your body hold up?"
Although she hadn’t seen Old Xu much, Demmi had mentioned him to Zhao Linan several times.
Especially about him coming to rescue them, Zhao Linan was very grateful in her heart for this.
Forcing a faint smile, Zhao Linan shook her head with a smile: "I’m fine, I feel great now, cough cough, but thank you for being willing to come here to rescue us, cough cough."
The two consecutive coughs revealed the girl’s frail condition. Old Xu quickly stopped her actions and brought over the hot water placed on the table: "Come on, stop talking, drink some hot water to soothe your throat first."
After handing over the hot water, Old Xu continued: "Since you already know about the rescue, I won’t say more. Now, the zombies outside have been mostly cleared, and I’ll take you out shortly. We might encounter emergencies during the process. No matter what happens, stay with the team. We’ll ensure your safety, understand?"
"Understood!!" Without extra words, Zhao Lina nodded firmly. Her decisive behavior resembled her father, Zhao Yunhai, a lot.
Watching the girl’s resolute actions, Xu Renjie said, "Very good," and involuntarily glanced outside the window: Old Zhao, rest assured, I’ll bring your daughter back to you safe and sound!
While Old Xu was assuring himself, the closed classroom door was pushed open from outside. Then Demmi’s voice came: "Captain Xu, they’re... I’ve brought them."
Turning around, Old Xu saw two emaciated girls.
The girls were already dressed, but even so, it did not hide their emaciated bodies.
Nodding slightly, Old Xu sighed: "You two, Demmi should have explained what’s next. I won’t say much, just three requests. First, listen to orders and follow the main group when outside. Second, don’t panic if we encounter zombies outside; we’ll handle them. Third, no matter what happens or what you see, stay calm. Don’t shout, don’t run. Any questions?"
The expected response didn’t come. The two girls hung their heads like offenders under trial, showing no reaction. It made Old Xu wonder if he hadn’t been clear enough.
Seeing the two stunned girls, Demmi understood their reaction.
She knew they were mentally traumatized from prolonged inhumane abuse. So...
Smiling gently, Demmi softly repeated Old Xu’s words.
Sure enough, after Demmi spoke, the stunned girls reacted. Although it was just a simple nod, it at least indicated they heard and understood Old Xu’s message.
"OK! Since everyone knows what to do, pack up and get ready to leave."
Outside, Lei Tong, Hua Biao, and Li Xiaoxin were still diligently moving chairs and benches.
Back then, they put lots of effort to block the door.
So now, clearing the barriers naturally took some time too.
After a collective effort lasting 3 minutes, the tightly blocked door finally revealed its original form.
No zombies outside was a good thing, at least for the survivors, as they didn’t have to face zombies before even stepping out the door.
"I’ll briefly explain the setup when we head out later. I’ll go out first, and once it’s safe, everyone follow. Lei Tong at the back, Hua Biao and Xiao Xin on the flanks. Little Demmi will be on emergency duty watching over the girls. Any questions?"
"I do!" Demmi raised her hand.
"Speak up, what’s the question!?"
"Can I have a weapon?"
An unexpected question, Old Xu glanced at Derek.
Derek was also surprised his woman would make such a request: "Demmi, what do you need a weapon for?"
"What else, the team has so many people, one more person means more strength. I’m in good health, how can I just rely on you all for protection."
Though she said that, the truth was Demmi mainly wanted to share Derek’s burden.
After all, nobody knew the situation outside. Even if she got a weapon, she might not be much help. But having something was better than nothing. (To be continued.
