Guy

How many times can I fuck up before she leaves me for good? I’m so stupid!

As soon as I get out of Beacon, my fist hits a nearby wall of a barely standing building. It crumbles beneath my fist. Good, I needed to break something after that. A quiet cough from behind me made me stop and breathe in the damp air.

“What do you want, Wyatt?” I turned out, crossing my arms. I don’t know how I knew it was him and not Noa. Maybe the mate bond…some bond though.

“Look, Guy, she’s not mad at you.” His amber eyes held a softness that I normally didn’t get to see. I wanted to hold on to that…but I also wanted to slap him. Goddess help me, I do not like domestic abuse.

I don’t want to be like Rupert.

“I know that.” I shrugged. “Everything happening in that room has nothing to do with me or with you. It is all about Sapph and how she feels.”

“Well, it has a little to do with me.” His tiny smirk made my hands itch to choke him. But who am I really angry at here? Him, or me?

“Regardless.” Wyatt cleared his throat.”I want you to know that I’ll be stepping back for a while.”

I raised a brow and waited for the rest of the bullshit train to pull into the station.

“What I mean is that I won’t be within proximity. I’ll be around but not close enough for old habits to form.” His hand reached up to adjust glasses that were no longer there. Wyatt’s hand dropped as he frowned in disappointment.

“And did you discuss this with her or is this you making yet another decision on her behalf?” I could feel my blood pressure rising.

“I’m waiting for her to come out and then we’ll discuss it—”

“But your mind is already made up, isn’t it.” My lips curled and twisted to the side. He never learns. If it’s not Sanctuary, he's removing himself from the situation—a plan that already failed horribly.

“Guy, I’m not seeing that many solutions where she has a safe, stress-free pregnancy. Not with me around. I need to go on and give her space.” He eyed the ground, running his hands through his curly black hair. “I can’t make up for what I’ve done to her but I need to show her that I can change.”

That melted me a little. He was giving it his one hundred percent effort, yet even this feels like he’s just taking the easy way out again.

“And what about Noa? He agree to you two leaving yet?” I motioned to his shared body—a body that currently looked only like Noa.

His jaw tightened, I could see the muscles tense beneath his skin.

“We’re still discussing it.”

“That means no, doesn't it.” I chuckled as he sighed.

“It means that we’ll wait until we can talk to Sapph. Worst case scenario, we stay and Noa just takes the forefront. He’ll need help for what I have planned though.” I eyed him warily. “A plan that I am sharing this time.”

“I don’t believe you…but I’m willing to let you try.” What else could I do?

I turned away from him then as I looked for more buildings to knock down. Sapph had torn down so much of the city—I’m honestly surprised she didn’t kill anyone during her rampage. Cyran City used to always run evacuation drills so it’s not that insane. I’m guessing everyone just moved their asses fast enough.

At least that’s what I’m hoping for.

“Are you going out?” Wyatt softly asked. He’d closed the distance and stood behind me now. His scent hit me hard. Tweed and whiskey and home—fuck, he smelled like home. I did my best to deny my needs but I could only hold out for so long.

“Yep. I need to hit stuff. Gotta work out some of this frustration or I’m gonna pop like a grape.” Even now, my muscles tensed with an ache to be used.

“I could help with that.” Oh goddess, why was his voice lower than before? Was that Noa or Wyatt that leaned into my neck and inhaled my scent?

Don’t turn around. For fuck’s sake, do not give in. My shoulders went rigid and I slowed my breathing down to a crawl.

“Wyatt. No.” I closed my eyes, half waiting for him to touch me just so I could punch him and half waiting so I could kiss him. This must be what Sapph feels like on a daily basis.

“Hm. Fine.” That was him. He wanted to touch me.And Phereda help me, I wanted to let him. Was I that touch starved? Once he left my presence, and I learned how to breathe again, I spread my wings and took off into the sky.

I had to get out of there. I needed to clear my head.

The wall. Sapph tore it down but the people that lived and worked there were homeless now. People that I used to call family. I was exiled when I chose my mates but I still wanted to make sure they were safe.

I softly landed on the remaining top edge of the wall. Only a few soldiers were out but they weren’t guarding their side of the wall—they picked up debris and items, and tried piecing their life back together.

“I can help with that.” I put some bass in my voice and didn’t leave room for an argument. The two recognized me off the bat. And to my surprise? They stood at attention and saluted me.

Color me shocked. I didn’t know what to say.

“At ease…idiots.” Grinning like a Cheshire cat, I waved them off. “I’m not your commander anymore.”

“No but—”

“We missed you man. Our new commander is a hardass.” They admitted quietly, like they were gossiping about the new girl in school.

“Oh yeah? Who’s the new guy then? Maybe I’ll set him straight for you.” It was so friggin awesome to be missed—to be wanted.

I didn’t hear him land behind me. The bastard was always too quiet for his own good. He didn’t speak at first but I knew who it was simply by how the air shifted around us—like it was pushing us together.

I steeled myself and turned around, eyeing the one man I knew I hurt by choosing my mate.

“Voss.” I mumbled, swallowing the lump in my throat. God he looked good. Long dark hair pulled back into a low-hanging ponytail, wiry tan body and almond eyes that made my breath catch in my throat.

Memories forced themselves out. Long hot nights under the moon, him underneath me begging for me. What we had was never the mate bond but it felt close enough. And before Sapph became more than just my fantasies, it was close enough.

“Domingo.” His eyes raked over me, mouth set in a hard line that slowly morphed into a grin. “It’s about time you came back. We have some things to catch up on.”
