I leapt in front of her, determined not to lose my ex to a misunderstanding.

“Sapph! Stop. This is Voss–”

She narrowed her eyes on him. “I don’t care who he is. He was touching you and he wants to fuck you.” Sapphyra crossed her arms, took a sniff and then covered her nose, grimacing.

I did the same and frowned, turning to a blushing Voss. Busted. He’s close to being in rut and he wasn’t gonna tell me about it?

“Dude.” I furrowed my brows at him.

“What?! I hadn’t seen you in months—how did you think my body was going to react?” He nervously tucks a strand of his raven hair behind his ear. Voss was competent in battle. In fact, he was second only to me. But what do you do when you face someone who just tore up a city on an emotional breakdown?

You don’t.

I watched Sapphyra’s shoulders relax, the vein in her neck no longer protruding. She still had a killer glare on him though.

“Sapph. Come on, angel.” She pouts, finally taking her eyes off of Voss. She wraps her arms around my neck and pulls me into her bosom.

“Mine.” Good goddess, if she kept talking like that I’d need new pants soon.

“I know, I know. Yours. Although I wasn’t always.” I motioned to Voss, trying to ease the conversation out. I wanted to get it done sooner rather than later.

“He’s your ex?” She asked, “he’s hot. But he can’t have you anymore.” I’d be lying if I said I wasn't eating this attention up. It’s probably the mate bond but even still, she wants me. She’s willing to fight for me. Right now, that’s more than enough.

“Well, I guess that answers my earlier question.” Voss quietly added. His baritone voice dropped with each word. He knew how serious mate bonds were yet, he was still here. For me.

“Voss. I’m sorry for—” sorry for what? What could I say? Sorry that I ghosted you? That I could have told you to your face that I was choosing my mate—my idol, over you?

“Stop apologizing, Guy. It’s a bad look.” He sighed. I didn’t turn around to watch him leave but I heard the sound of soft wingbeats nearby.

“I have no idea why I was so ready to rip that man’s head off.” Sapphyra groaned softly. She dropped her arms and put one hand to her temple.

I laughed a little. “That would be the mate bond we share. It makes us extra protective, jealous, even feral if need be. I’d like to say it’s gotten stronger since we’ve been together.”

“I’m not gonna question it. Just…try not to run into him again. I don’t want his scent anywhere near you or it might trigger me again.” She rolled her shoulders and absentmindedly rubbed her belly.

The baby. Right. I was so caught up in the moment that I almost forgot.

“Sapph, can I ask you something?” It didn’t matter now but later on it would.

“Can it wait? Or we can talk about it while we search, I guess.” She sniffed the air, eyes closed as she searched for something or someone.

My hands curled into fists for half a second.

“What is it now? Did Wyatt run away again or is there a cat stuck up a tree that needs you more than me?” My voice and my blood pressure was rising. I know I need to get it under control but enough is enough.

Sapph’s eyes widened. They shined with unshed tears before she clicked her jaw and turned away from me.

“If you must know, it’s Zeke. He’s still missing and Wyatt is looking for him all alone.” She raised her head up to the sky, letting the light hit her face. Her glow was beautiful—it was always beautiful and heartbreaking for me.

“I thought his mates would be there to back him up but clearly something is wrong with you right now.”

“Now?” I clicked my tongue against the roof of my mouth. “I’ve been like this for weeks, Sapph. I love you. I love Wyatt and the little life you made inside you.” Air escaped my nose, I would not lose my shit and stress her out. That’s not what either of us needs right now.

“But I’m aching with need, Sapph. Not just for intimacy but access to your heart.”

She tried to interrupt but I held up my index finger. “Nah, let me finish. I know it’s been awful out here. You’re away from your family, your friends…but you have family here. You have me, Noa, Silla, Corre and so much more if you just let us be there for you.”

Big fat tears rolled down her soft cheeks as her bottom lip trembled. My chest tightened but I continued on.

“I know you and Wyatt have history. Hell, you two are history in motion and it’s beautiful and terrifying to see up close.” The distance had closed between us. Gently, I held her hands in mine and rubbed my thumb across her knuckles. She softly gasped when my lips connected with the warm brown sugar skin

“There is more than just Wyatt out here, obsessed with you. I know you know that, Sapph, but I have to see it and feel it from you. Not just when Voss or someone gets close to me but all the time.”

I laid out all my cards for her. The ball was in her court now. Waiting for her was like waiting for paint to dry. And every drop held my future in it.

“Guy.” She started with an even tone though I could tell she was on the verge of breaking, “I want to give you everything you want but I’ll be honest with you, I don’t know how.”

I raised a brow. “What do you mean?”

“I mean, I don’t know how.” She paused, making sure I was paying attention. “Everytime I’m with him or I see him, I have to fight every memory and ache in my soul. He’s been there for so long…he’s intertwined in my damn DNA, Guy. “ She sighed and continued, rubbing her arms for comfort. “He is my war and my peace.”

“Yeah, no shit.” I smirked at her. “This is tough but it won’t be impossible. So how about this…”

I wrapped my arms around her waist, pulling her towards me. She blushed, lowering her gaze at the ground bashfully. She leaned in, bringing our foreheads together.

“We go look for Zeke, together, and when we’re done? You and I are gonna go do something special together. No Wyatt, no drama, just us. Deal?”

Please say yes.

“Deal.” She quietly agreed with a small smile and kissed me slowly, letting my hands trail up her sturdy back. This hill used to have a special place in my heart, a reminder of Voss and I. But now I know for certain: Sapph, the literal wrecking ball in my life, had started breaking me down and building me back up inch by inch. Her taste was branded on my tongue, her moans were my lullaby.

She might be addicted to Wyatt, but I would always be addicted to her just as badly.

“Hate to interrupt you two,” we pulled apart, gasping for air.

Of course Wyatt chooses to interrupt now.

“Did you find Zeke?” Sapph asked him, not facing him just yet.

“Not yet. But there’s something else I have to show you.” He turned his back on us and motioned for us to follow. “You’ll never guess who else was underground with the capps.”
