Sapphyra
I found makeup and put it on. I never wore makeup. Then again, I’d made it a point not to look in a mirror lately. Something about being in a coma for 100 years really fucks with your body and self-esteem.
“You’re beautiful.” Guy murmured against my neck, arms around my waist as we stood outside the holding cells.
“You’re saying that because you’re my mate.” I liked hearing it nonetheless.
“Maybe but it’s also true. You’re the sexiest, prettiest and most beautiful being I’ve ever laid eyes on—and I thought that back when I only saw you in pictures.”
A faint smile graced my lips and I leaned back to kiss him. “If you’re looking to get on my good side, you’re already there.”
“I aim to please.” His grin melted my heart. I’m so lucky to have Guy as a soulmate. “Ready to go in?”
No. I’m worried that I’ll accidentally shove my fist through Voss’s face.
“About as ready as I’ll ever be. Let’s get this over with.”
Guy gave me a half smile, he felt my pain. To ease my worries, he held my hand and we walked into the grand grey building. Several guards stood straighter when Guy walked by, still showing him respect despite him no longer being their boss.
“They really love you eh? Should I be even more jealous?” I smirked but it was a valid question.
To my credit, this is nothing new for me. I’ve always been a little green when it comes to men or things I love. I don’t like sharing—ironic given the polyship I’m in but here we are.
“Never. These guys are far too much of an ass-kisser to ever get my attention.”
“So that’s how Voss got you~” Guy blushed at my tease.
“No-no I didn’t mean it like that!” He quickly whispered, brows furrowed.
“I know, love. Calm down.” This hallway seemed to stretch on forever. Eventually we made it to the end. One thick grey counter separated us from the door that held my son, directly behind it. At first I was hopeful that it was unattended but then his scent hit my nose.
Jasmine tea. Who the hell smells like jasmine tea out of nowhere?!
And why is it smelling so familiar?
Voss stood up from behind the desk. An immediate musky scent hit our noses as another male soldier—face redder than a tomato—stood up and zipped up his pants. The soldier shuffled off but Voss squared his shoulders and clenched his jaw when he locked eyes with Guy, conveniently ignoring me.
“Guy.” Voss all but spit that name out. The strong scent of male musk hit my nose when he opened his mouth. Yep, I knew he was a bottom.
“That’s my name.” he paused, a slow smile gracing his full lips. “It’s about time you moved on.”
“Did you come here for something important or just to torture me again?” His eyes nervously darted over towards me and back to Guy.
Yeah buddy, I’m still in the room. Try not to sweat too much, I don’t think my nose can take it.
“I did come here for a reason…but it’s nice to know you’re doing okay—” Voss held up a hand, cutting Guy off. That ruffled my scales and I had to bite the inside of my cheek to stay civil.
“Save it.” Voss sighed and pinched the bridge of his perfectly placed nose. “Look, if you’re here to see Rupert, that’s a no go. He’s under strict orders from—”
“From who?” Guy crossed his arms, narrowing his eyes at Voss. “There’s not really anyone in charge anymore, is there?”
“Oh, now you care about our society? Done playing house with your pretty pink-scaled mate?” His sneer was the last straw for me. How dare he act like such an ass when Guy clearly still cared about him?! And that pissed me off even more!
Guy quickly had an arm around my waist, right below my breasts, holding me back from killing Voss. Voss stood back, the sneer replaced with a smug smile.
“Easy love. He’s not worth it.” Guy murmured in my ear.
“He does not get to talk to you like that. All you’re doing is being nice and his bitter-flat-ass can’t stand to see you happy!”
Voss scoffed but Guy and I could smell the stress sweat oozing out of him. He was beyond afraid but comfortable as long as Guy was here to help handle me. Too comfortable.
I stopped moving, sitting dangerously still in Guy’s arms.
“Sapph, it’s alright.” Guys voice was soft and he kissed my forehead.
“If you must know, the people have started a democracy until we can find someone else to take over.” Voss propped his head up on his fist, bored.
“Not a bad idea, the only problem I see with that is that they still want to be led. Look what happened because of following behind Rupert? You really wanna go back to that?” I looked towards my mate, nuzzling into his shoulder. He rubbed my belly in acknowledgment but this moment was pretty serious.
“That’s not something for me to worry about. I’m just a soldier without a commander right now.” Voss’s eyes flickered to Guy's hand over my belly, he clamped down his jaw.
I could see it in his eyes, Voss wanted to say something about it but I’d be damned if I let him have any say over my second child.
“What if I came back?” Guy quietly offered. My eyes widened.
“What?” Voss whispered, placing a hand on the counter to steady himself. “You’d really come back? Just like that?”
“I’d consider it, as long as you let my mate see her son.” At least he added the word consider. Still, my stomach flipped at just the idea of him being near Voss again.
Voss eyed us both, letting the idea linger in the air like a shopper in a store five minutes before closing. He knew we needed this but I knew we couldn’t trust him as far as we could throw him.
And I could throw him to the moon if I was angry enough.
“No.” He finally said. My hands clenched into fists and I huffed and puffed like the big bad dragon, ready to stomp in his house.
“No?” Guy questioned with a raised brow.
“I don’t want you back as the commander. It would just…it would be a bad idea, I think we can all agree on that.” Voss’s eyes met mine, steady and honest for once. I nodded.
“Bad idea wouldn’t be a strong enough term.” I added, keeping my anger in check.
“Yeah, I don’t wanna die anytime soon. I’d still like to find my mate first…” he sighed and splayed his fingers out over the countertop. They drummed like it would speed up his decision—-I wish they did.
“I’ll let you in.” My breath caught in my throat and I had to fight the smile coming to my face. Voss pointed at me, “I’m only letting you in because I know you could just bust in there and beat my ass if you wanted to. So yeah, you can go see him.”
At least he had some common sense.
Voss took his keys off his belt and opened the cell door for us. The coppery scent of blood hit my nose and my heart dropped to the floor.
“Don’t blame me for what you find though.”
