Wyatt

Something wasn’t right. It was quiet. Too quiet.

“Noa?” I called out for my wolf—my brother but nothing came back. I wasn’t inside our mind anymore, but I couldn’t move either. I could hear and smell but—-oh fuck, I figured out what it was.

Sleep paralysis.

I’m asleep right now, isn’t that just peachy? I don’t know where I am but I’m not in that alleyway anymore. The faint scent of both dragonsbane and wolfsbane hit me. That’s probably why I’m still asleep. They must be keeping it close by.

But soon I’ll show them it’s not close enough.

“I shouldn’t be in the front. Wake up, asshole!” I tried yelling at him again but only silence met me like a scorned lover leaving me on read. Noa…where is he?

“How do you do it?” That scent, that voice. Red hair, ponytail, dirty as hell. Rhea. She must be standing in front of me for her stank to be that powerful.

“Still asleep? That’s no good, I really need to talk to you about your wife.” My heart raced with fear and feral anger. If only I could move, then we’d have a really close conversation.

I still needed Noa though, I couldn’t shift without him.

Something scraped against the ground. A chair? Was she moving a chair to sit in front of me?

Dammit, Wyatt, open your eyes!

“You really are still asleep, huh? I shouldn’t get too close to that stuff they have on your neck or I might go to sleep too.” Her putrid breath hit my nose, ugh. Yep, definitely in front of me. Now I just needed to know if she was alone in the room with me…whatever room this is, if it is one at all.

There’s something around my neck? That would explain it, the damn scent smacks me everytime I even think about waking up.

“Without that though, we wouldn’t have been able to keep your wolf asleep. So…I gotta ask you something.”

She paused and sucked in some air. Whatever comes out of her mouth next does not sound good.

“Wyatt, how do you deal with the ache?”

Ache?

Her voice trembled, soft scratching below me caught my attention. She must have been scratching at her knees, a habit I used to have before I had Sapphyra as a permanent fixture of my life.

“I’m only telling you this because you’re the only one who understands what it is like to love her.” She softly sighed, I think her knee brushed against mine? Why the hell is she getting closer to me?

“I’ve been using my power to ease the pain but it strains me to hold it for so long. You get it right, with your teleportation power? We have a log of how many times you can use it before you tap out. It’s such an annoying power.” Her pitch rose, yeah she was annoyed with me. Good. I hated her just as much.

Ah, so that’s why they made that trap. I was right, if I’d blinked away then they’d have nothing.

Still, what the hell was Rhea talking about? An ache for what?

“Wyatt, you remember the bar, right? When you put all those memories in my head?”

My stomach dropped. Things suddenly started making too much sense. I should have guessed what Rhea meant when she said she was in love.

I just didn’t want to.

“You put in too much…too fucking much!” Rhea growled in my ear. “I can’t close my eyes without seeing her face. At night? Fuck, I can’t get a good nights sleep unless she’s underneath me, moaning my name.”

Oh hell. The psychic backlash…

“She’s imprinted into my mind thanks to the backlash you caused! I’m addicted to getting just a tiny glimpse of her and it’s all your fault!” she screamed, kicking my chest hard. I felt my eyelids flutter, just a bit. The chair I was sitting in scooted back a bit.

If the goddess favors me even just a little, she’ll let this crazy bitch accidently free me.

Footsteps, she must be pacing back and forth.

“Why couldn’t you just have killed me instead? You’re the supergenius, surely you knew something like this would happen, right?” A soft sigh escapes her lips and a moment later I feel a foreign presence on my shoulder. Soft and large like pillows but scentless.

“Hi daddy.” A familiar soft innocent voice stirred something in my chest.

S-Sapphyra?

My body jerked towards her, at her voice. Those must be her breasts on my shoulder then. I sniffed in her direction but she moved away from me.

“I figured hearing that voice would make you try to get up. But that’s all you get for now. See, cus we need you alive for the end goal. Although…”

Cold like ice, a pair of fingers tilt my chin up, grasping it tightly.

“I’ll let you in on a little secret. My plan isn’t to hand you over in exchange for Rupert—”

There it is! Every supervillain I’ve ever faced was always dumb enough to tell me their plan at some point. It’s like an unwritten rule.

“Nah. I’m gonna keep you around in another cage so you can watch me make love to your wife day in and day out. You need to see what it fucking feels like, watching someone else take what is yours!”

The illusion of Sapphyra moaned next to my ear. Oh god, was she really about to—right next to me?!

“Oh, Rhea! Right there baby!”

My eyelids fluttered and opened briefly but that damn necklace fought me.

It’s not real. It’s not her. Rhea is just trying to get under your skin, Wy.

So why was my soul burning to break free and eat her alive?

Wait…that wasn’t my soul burning. My throat—it felt like I was going to vomit, like the worst case of acid reflux just hit me out of nowhere. And it was cold…how can acid be cold?

“You like that baby?” Those sounds, her moans…right next to my damn ear. They were driving me crazy.

My hands gripped the chair so hard my knuckles drained of color.

I swore an oath not to take a life when Sapphyra asked me all those years ago.

But I swear to the goddess, when I get out of these bindings…

“Hehe, that’s my princess, rain on my tongue, sexy.” Her deranged laugh made my blood boil. Those were my words!

I swear, I will kill Rhea. No matter what!
