Sapphyra
I woke up in pitch black darkness, screaming bloody murder. I’d had a nightmare but I couldn’t remember anything specific about it other than one scary fact: I was alone.
Strong arms encircled me, and soft cooing calmed me back down. They weren’t Wyatt’s arms though and I think that’s what hurts the most.
He might not be here but he doesn’t have to be either. I might miss him—miss Noa too but I know they’ll pop again…probably at the most inconvenient time. Inconvenient to me, not to them.
“Guy?!” My chest was heaving and my lungs were fighting for their lives.
“Yeah it’s me! I’m here. You’re okay.” He shushed me as incoherent groans escaped me.
“I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I had this nightmare…but I can’t…Guy, I was all alone and in the dark—” I have never been this fragile before. Not the first time I was pregnant, not when my father abandoned me.
The only other time that came close was in Drakkir. Suddenly having a nightmare about being alone was much more comforting than dreaming of that place again.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Guy gently rubbed my shoulders, making me melt into his touch.
“No. I’d rather not dwell on anything negative today. In fact—” I hopped out of bed and threw the covers off of me. “I feel like tackling some problems on the surface.”
“I’m not sure how I feel about you tackling anything other than a sandwich right now.” Guy mumbled. He blushed when I glared at him.
“I’m just saying! There's no need to stress yourself out, Sapph.”
“Not stressing myself out. But Guy, there’s something you gotta know about me: I can’t sit still too long.” I hated being idle. A trait that used to drive my family crazy, Wyatt too. Even when I’m sick, I have to be doing something.
“Fine but what exactly do you plan on doing and can it wait until you’ve had a shower and breakfast?” He asked that calmly but from the way his hands rested on his hips, it was not a suggestion.
Rubbing the bottom of my nose, I pulled back the hotel curtains and gazed out at the jaw-dropping city. Cappville, a place built by capps and for capps yet they accommodate my mom and my family so easily. Why can’t it be like that on the surface?
Come to think of it, they probably made this city to get away from the humans. I’m not much of a negotiator but I couldn’t exactly rebuild the city on my own. Sure, I could make the buildings and roads all shiny and new but with Hyperion gone, we needed a way to make and maintain electricity. I also hadn’t heard from Tethys and Oceanus lately so new water maintenance is on the list too. An architect would be nice, maybe the same craftsman who made those chairs and lamps outside. They only used natural resources but everything still came out looking like IKEA touched it.
Ugh. This is giving me a headache. I miss being just a Battlefield Janitor.
“Earth to angel? Hello? You’ve gotten lost in your head again, haven’t you?” Guy sighed and kissed my forehead, bringing me out of my troubles.
“Sorry.” I scratched my head and wandered into the shower. “I was busy thinking about how much needed to be done for Cyran City to get back to normal. There's more than just rebuilding everything, ya know? My number one problem is getting the capps and descendants to stop hating each other.”
Once the warm water sprayed on my back, I shivered as Guy carefully washed my back.
“That’s easier said than done. Descendants have long since branded capps as nothing but monsters.” He paused, “you and I know that’s a lie because we’re friends with capps. The rest of the city is still living in Rupert’s lies.”
I gripped my wrist, thinking about my son. Why the hell did it have to be him all this time?
“Do you know when his trial is gonna be?” I turned, letting him wash my front. I inhaled sharply as his soapy fingers reached in places untouched.
“No.” His voice was strained. If his front was anything to go by, I had to give him credit for self control.
“Fine. Then we’ll just go see the people who’re holding him for his trial date and ask.”
I climbed out of the shower and started drying off. Guy did not. He wouldn’t meet my gaze.
“Something you want to tell me?” I asked, wrapping the towel around myself.
“Huh? Oh uh…no but I probably should, right?” He nervously laughed, drying himself off next. He took his time but eventually stepped out of the bathroom behind me, eyes still trained on the floor. Guy took a deep breath and held his head high, looking like he wanted to confess his sins.
“The person in charge of detainment is Voss.” My claws shredded the towel I was gripping.
Voss, the pretty boy, the ex of my soulmate. I shouldn’t be jealous, Guy was with him before he knew I was still alive.
So why am I grinding my teeth like I’m ready to bite his stupid head off?
“It’s fine.” I lied. Hey, if I said it long enough, maybe I’d believe it! “We’ll just go talk to him.”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea. If he sees you he’ll be on the defensive and less likely to give us answers.” Guy was right, in theory. But I wanted to prove him wrong…okay maybe I just wanted a reason to fight that fucker.
Two things can be right at the same time!
“Guy, it’ll be fine.”
His face said it would most definitely not be fine.
“Ugh. Okay, you can talk to him first and then if that goes nowhere, I’ll come in. Can we agree on that much?”
He crossed his arms and I had to fight my eyes not to linger on his pecs.
“We’ll go in together, we can even hold hands. Just…” he ran his fingers through his hair, “just let me do all the talking, okay?”
I gave him a double thumbs up.
“What’s the worst that could happen?”
