Nobody moved. Nobody blinked.

The room was so quiet you could hear everyone's heartbeats. And I had absolutely no idea what to do here.

On the one hand, Rupert is bruised and bleeding, he needs me. But Guy just got a bomb dropped on him and I’m his mate. What should I do?

What would Wyatt do? Of course I think of him in times like this.

I moved to hug Guy but the second that I did, he maneuvered around me and grasped Rupert by the throat, pinning him to the wall. I’ve never seen him so mad.

“You absolute bastard! You KNEW! Every goddamn day, you knew I ached for my parents. I thought they’d abandoned me! But no. They were right on the other side of the fucking wall you built! You poisoned me and everyone else in this city when we should have been working together all along!”

Guy yelled in Rupert’s face. He watched Rupert change colors but through it all, he never lost his manic grin.

I’m ashamed to say I took way too long to get in between the two. I almost let him murder my son…because I knew the evils that Rupert had wrought and I understood it.

But I also understood Guy Dynamo.

“Guy. Enough. You’re gonna kill him.” I stepped in front of his face and met his hate-filled eyes with my own kind ones. That made him loosen his grip but he refused to let go…for now.

“I tried to help them.” Rupert wheezed out, turning his gaze towards me. “But all those bodies you saw? They were failed attempts.”

“Failed attempts at what? Making them monsters so the hate keeps running?!” Guy bit back, spittle flying from his mouth.

Rupert didn’t flinch.

“No. I tried to make them human again. I’m afraid that even with my research, I’ve run out of time to find a cure for them.”

Guy blew out some air, hands finally slipping free from my son's neck. I knew that tension would snap between them eventually, I just didn’t think it would be over this.

“Why?”

“I do have a trial coming up—” Guy cut him off.

“No. Why would you bother helping them? What would that gain you?”

Again, Rupert’s eyes snapped towards me. Something small and vulnerable flashed in his eyes. My heart clenched.

“He did it for me.” I chuckled, exhausted but carrying on somehow. “You wanted me to be your monster but you also wanted to save the people Barbie helped ruin, all for my approval?”

“Well yes, that and to one up Wyatt.” He snorted.

I shook my head and sighed. Beside me, Guy was still humming with anger but the more I rubbed my hands on his back, the easier time breathing he had.

“Of course. You’re just like him in the worst way possible.” Guy mumbled, moving away from me and out of the door.

Dammit.

I sighed and helped Rupert up but he weakly pushed me back.

“What part of ‘you shouldn’t visit me’ do you not understand?” He hissed.

I narrowed my eyes on him. “Didn’t you just say that you wouldn’t push me away?”

“This is different.” He groaned, laying down on the cot they’d given him. Rupert motioned towards the door. “That little display, though it was honest, I did that so you would leave me. Leave this place.” He hung his head low and sighed.

“Leave me to my fate, mother.”

“Excuse you?” My mouth twisted and I damn near snarled at this boy. “Do you think you can just push me away because you’re afraid of what comes next?”

His eyes widened and he leaned back.

“Oh yeah, it ain’t that hard to tell babes. I know you’re afraid to die so you’re pushing back the only people left who could care about you.” I leaned over, pressing my forehead against his.

“So let me tell you this; that isn’t how family works.” He laughed and turned away from me, putting up his stony mask once more.

“Family. Fear. You know nothing about where my thoughts go.” He averted his gaze, letting me know I was absolutely right.

“I’ll be sure to talk to your grandmother about that the next time I see her.”

I smirked, thinking mentioning my mom would give him a little more hope to hold on to.

Instead, his color drained and leaned forward like he was going to hurl.

“Whoa. Easy there. What’s wrong?” It’s like hearing about my mom made him physically ill.

“Your mother, how did she seem?” I blinked at his question, not getting it. He sighed and grasped me by the shoulders. “Mom, focus.”

Oh. That one word, no not just the word but how he said it.

“I’m focused. I’m here. She seemed fine I guess?” Honestly, I hadn’t thought too much about what her story was—I was just so happy to have her back in my life.

“Did she say where she came from?”

“Well, no. Why?”

Rupert groaned.

“Mom, listen to me. There’s something that Barbie did…and it involves your family.”

“What?” My throat constricted as the wheels turned in my head. “What are you saying, Rupert, that Barbie hurt my family?”

“No!” He shook his head, this was the most flustered I’d seen him in a while. “At least I don’t think she hurt them. I think—she used to say that they were her insurance policy but she never gave me any details.” He took a deep breath, his next words were measured and slow.

“She said she did to them what Wyatt tried to do to yous…and that is all I know.”

My jaw clenched and I ripped myself free from him. I didn’t miss the hurt look in his eyes but I couldn’t pay that any attention now.

“Guy!” I called out, heading in the same direction he went. I half expected him to be in conversation with Voss but no, he was standing in front of the building, eyes closed.

“Yes ma’am.” he breathed slowly.

“We have a problem—”

“Does that problem involve Wyatt at all?” He gently cut me off, finally opening his eyes.

I took a step back, “what, were you listening in or something?”

“No. But an illusion of you just walked up to me and handed me this.”

His arms came out from behind his back and in his hands there was a familiar pair of orange tinted glasses.

Glasses that were stained with red.
