“Sapph?”
I heard Guy’s voice but I couldn’t move. The blood soaked glasses in my hands held me hostage. Questions flew through my mind and I didn’t want any of the answers.
How long had he been missing? Why hadn’t I known he was taken? What have they done to my husband?
Husband. The word rattled through my body like beans in a tin can. Wyatt—for goddess’ sake, we might have problems but if anything happened to him? If I lost him?
My heart beat so hard that I felt it in my throat. With trembling hands, I put the glasses in my pocket and turned to Guy.
“What are you thinking?” He asked me as if he didn’t know. Guy could feel my emotions through our mate bond but I didn’t bother expressing them outloud. It would just make the pain worse.
“Did she give you a location?” I sniffed and wiped the bottom of my nose, averting my gaze.
“Yeah.” He watched me like I was a bomb about to explode.
“Okay so why aren’t you telling me where the drop is happening?” I know my pitch was raised. I’m stressed out.
“I’ll tell you when you take a moment to breathe.” He crossed his arms, standing firm in his decision. Meanwhile I didn’t have time to breathe.
“Guy, if you love Wyatt at all you’ll tell me where they want to exchange for Rupert and help me handle the situation.” His brows shot up. I pressed the emergency guilt button—I know it but what choice did I have?
“How did you know they wanted Rupert?”
Another sniff. My allergies must be coming back. I was always allergic to bullshit.
“I’ve seen this done a dozen times. The bad guys take someone you love to exchange for a high profile target. And since it was an illusion of me, that means Rhea is involved.”
My fist clenched as the humid air washed over me. I couldn’t even enjoy the nice weather—that’s for people who don’t have kidnapped husbands.
“Right.” Guy clicked his tongue and pulled me into his chest. I was still on edge but hearing his heartbeat grounded me. Nowhere near calm, not yet, but no rocks would be thrown anytime soon.
Unless of course, I run into Rhea, then all bets are off.
“The ruins of Beacon. She said to bring him there in one hour or…” his pause filled me with dread.
“You don’t have to tell me. I know the drill.” They’d kill him without fail. Hell, for all I know they could be planning to do that anyway.
“So how do you want to—”
“I’m taking him out of jail. That’s it. That’s the plan.” It was my turn to cross my arms and stand firm.
Guy sighed and ran a hand through his wavy black hair, eyes hooded with worry.
“Look, I’ll be the last person to tell you not to turn that bastard in, especially after what he’s done to me—to this city. He deserves whatever fate they have in store for him…”
“But?” I pushed him further.
Guy rubbed the back of his neck, “But I don’t think this is right. If we hand him over to them, whatever they have planned? It won’t give the citizens here any peace.”
“Don’t you think I know that?” My voice broke and I bit my knuckle, holding back my tears with duct tape and prayers. “I’m handing over my supervillain son to trade for my supervillain husband. There is no good solution here because if I don’t do something, then there’s a good fucking chance that they’ll both—” the word choked me.
A sob broke free from me. I fell into Guy's embrace as the tears flowed free from me.
I’m so fucking pathetic. I used to be on top of the world but now look at me.
“They won’t die.” He promised.
“You don’t know that!” I wailed like my life was a soap opera. Actually, no, it probably is a soap opera—I just wish I could watch it instead of living it.
“Maybe not,” Guy smoothed down my hair, “but I know you. And I know you’ll find a way to save them both. You could do it on your own but now you have me with you.”
He pressed our foreheads together and kissed my tears away, drop by drop.
“If there's one person in the world I would bet my life on, it’s you, angel.”
I laughed a little. “Fuck you for being so cheesy right now.” My mouth descended upon his and we didn’t pull away until we were both breathless. But this kiss wasn’t passionate, it was a promise.
“Feel better?” His grin reached his eyes as his lips grazed my chin.
“A little.” I paused, giving him a half smile as I looked him over. “Thanks for that.”
“It’s what being mates is all about. That and being friends too.” I loved to see his dimples when he smiled.
“In that case…I have a favor to ask you, because I think I have a plan on how to save everyone.” It was risky but it would be worth it…if it worked.
“Lay it on me.” He nodded and listened in as the words left my mouth. I swear he went through the five stages of grief with this plan. That just confirmed to me it was as crazy as I thought it was.
“I have no idea if I’m even capable of that, Sapph. I mean, we’ve been separated for a while now.”
“I know, Guy but could you at least try, just for me?”
“Why do you even think this is possible?”
“It’s a theory but…” my mind flashed back to an earlier adventure I’d had with a psychic friend of mine. People complain that magic is volatile but dealing with psychics is a far worse thing. There's something they never tell you about them.
They always leave a piece of themselves behind. And if there was a piece of who I’m thinking of—even just a sliver—that would be more than enough for my plan to work.
Guy concentrated. Beads of sweat formed at his brow and he swayed on his feet a little. As I caught him I nearly gave up hope.
But then his body started glowing.
