Wyatt

My eyes were open but I couldn’t feel anything from the waist down. Daily doses of violence will do that to you.

The worst part is: Rhea lets me heal all the damage and immediately puts the twin-bane bindings back on me.

And then we do it all over again.

I hear her footsteps echoing down the hallway but I’ve trained myself not to move. Do not give her anything more than she has already taken. And yet she’s already taken far too much from me.

“Finally up again? Ready for another round or do you wanna cry like a bitch about it first?” I could hear the smirk in her voice, the superiority oozing from her unhinged smile.

My silence was all she would get from me. And just like the day before, it pisses her off. Rhea snaps her fingers and summons another illusion of the love of my life. The first time she hurt me, it nearly broke me but I had to remind myself that it was all a ruse.

Rhea wanted me to suffer for my transgressions. She would learn to get in line behind the rest of the universe.

“Rhea, he’s not talking again.” the false Sapphyra whined in my ear. “I thought he loved me?”

Not you. You’re an abomination of my own making.

“He does, he’s just being stubborn. Lucky for him, I’m a patient woman.” Her feet touched the tips of mine. She stood before me, a different tactic than her last torment.

I didn’t mean to but I let a single shudder escape me when her pants hit the floor. Surely she wouldn’t…the last time had been barely bearable because she used my love against me. Did she mean to hurt me herself this time?!

“I thought I’d switch it up a little this time, ya know? Figure I’d see what all the fuss was about from Sapphs perspective. So,” bile ran up my throat as she changed forms and sat on my lap, “hot enough for you, daddy?”

It didn’t matter if I was or wasn’t, she would force me to be aroused regardless.

I let my mind escape to a happier place as she started. Normally I’m alone here, still expecting Noa to appear. But this time there was someone I couldn’t quite place, looking dead at me.

I had to clear my eyes a little but when I finally made out his features, my heart skipped a beat.

“Guy?” My voice was numb from lack of use. I walked towards him, and to my shock, I actually tried hugging him, my mate.

But I phased right through him.

“No….no, please.” I whispered, panic setting in.

“He’s not here but he’s trying to be here. The only problem is will you let him?” A different voice this time, feminine and authoritative. A woman appeared before me, pale and tall with rustic red hair falling down her face like a waterfall.

“Who are you?” I took up a defensive stance, ready to fight another demon in my mind. At least this one seemed to come from the outside.

“I am Phereda.” Hearing her name, the name of the goddess that failed to save my wife, it poured over me like ice water.

“When I begged God to help me, you were not who I pictured.” I narrowed my eyes on her, wary of any divine bullshit.

“Normally I wouldn’t but one of my children is trying to reach you and he’s praying to me for help.”

“Guy?” My eyes widened and a small smile formed on my bloodied, dried lips.

“Yes. My precious Guy. A mate of yours that I did my best to keep away from you.” Her hands clenched and released. Oh great, a goddess is pissed off at me.

“Why would you try to keep him away from me, if you were the one who gave him to me as a mate to begin with?”

The math was not mathing.

“Hah. That’s cute. As if I would ever hand my children a hybrid abomination for a mate like you.”

“Hybrid?” My brow raised. Phereda raised her hand, my memory played on a screen of my own imagination. It was the trial, the part where my parents were experimenting on me.

“Your father stole the last remnants of a very strong dragon soul and the fool placed it in you.” Her hand sliced through the air, tearing the memory away. I wrapped a hand around my neck, wondering when she would slice through me.

“Ah. I get it now.” It should have been obvious to me but I haven’t exactly had time to think about the trial lately. “You hate me because you have no control over me. Part dragon, part wolf, but not really part of either.”

Seems like the story of my life. I grew up thinking I was wolfless and now I’m learning that I’m not quite wolf either? I’m starting to hate mythical creatures.

“The energy inside you belonged to a dragon I cared for deeply, so when he died—or rather when his body died—any mate that was destined for him became yours instead. And now, I’m being asked to save you for that very mate that you neglect.”

My shoulders dropped and I frowned. She was right. I had to do better for Guy.

“But I can’t care for him if I’m being held hostage, now can I? Do your part and connect us.”

Her nostrils flared, a vein throbbed in her forehead as she pointed a finger at my chest.

“How DARE you! I am—”

“You are Phereda, the woman who failed to rescue Sapphyra from the very same fate I am going through right now!” That made her deflate like a balloon, being reminded of her lack of power.

“That wasn’t…I never meant for her to be—”

“It doesn’t matter. If you care for both of them then do what he is asking you to do. Otherwise,” I took a step towards her, pushing her hand out of my way. I glared up at her. “Otherwise get the hell out of my head.”

Her gaze narrows and I feel every ounce of her hate towards me. I can’t and won’t do anything about it now. Besides, being a nice person has never gotten me anywhere—no need to start today.

“Fine.” Phereda opened her hand. Guy’s form from earlier solidified and his eyes widened once he saw me.

Phereda turned her back on me but not before she said one thing that unsettled me.

“I sent her true mate to rescue her…but unlike you, when he decided to defy his fate, he did it with no regrets. When everything comes crashing down on you, can you still say the same?”

In a puff of red smoke, she exited my mind, leaving me alone with an excited Guy.

“Man, have I been dying to get in here again!” He grinned at me, “so much has happened. By the way, neither me nor Sapph knew about this.”

I held up a hand, dismissing his concern.

“I know. We’re not worrying about that right now.”

Before I lost my nerve, I threw my arms around his beefy shoulders and hugged him tightly. Not even air could get in between us. He wrapped his arms around me and kissed my forehead.

“Can we take a rain check on this?” I looked up at him expectantly.

“I have a plan.”
