Sapphyra

Beacon headquarters lay in ruins. Ruins that I helped make when I tore through the city. Feels like it was just yesterday. Wait, was it yesterday? No, a few days have passed at least.

My thoughts are drifting again. This plan is never going to work if I don’t get it together.

I breathe deeply as I land on the front door steps, tucking my wings in behind me.

I know I haven’t prayed to you in forever, Phereda, and I know I haven’t been the most grateful but if you’re watching…look over Wyatt.

A prayer. That’s what I’m doing now? Pathetic.

As I walked through our old home, I grimaced with each bedroom I passed. Great. Now Liam and Vega won’t have anything to return to…if they return at all.

“I see you didn’t bring your son with you.” Hearing my own voice through the walls sent my stomach into a spiral. I absolutely hate doppelgangers—especially my own.

“Why don’t you come out here and talk to me about it? Come on, let’s have a heart to heart.”

My horns vibrated gently once my hand touched the wall to my right. Its a nifty thing I often forget about, being able to sense other dragons. Even though this one is fake, it’s still real enough to trigger me.

And the closer she got to me, the harder my horns vibrated. And right now? My head felt like an earthquake was rolling through it, which meant only one thing:

She was coming through that wall!

I stepped back at just the right moment, sighing as another wall fell.

“You wanted to have a chat, cutie? Here I am!” She lunged at me, arm cocked back. I’d trained enough against myself to know how to dodge my own moves.

That’s what Sanctuary was built for anyway, training. Not keeping people hostage for 100 years.

Our tails locked in an endless grapple as she tried to get the upperhand. Every punch, kick and sweep just tested my flexibility. I would not let her lay a hand on me, not until I was ready.

“For someone who wants to talk, you sure are silent. Wyatt was silent too…until I had him inside me that is.”

My eyebrow twitched and my gut twisted with anguish. I knew they were torturing him but going that far?

“Oh don’t feel too bad about it. You should be happy! I opened—oh I mean, I warmed him up for you.” Her laugh was creepy, like she belonged in a halloween store and not in my damn house.

Pink and black flames erupted around my feet, engulfing me and the hallway itself shortly after.

Kill.

My dragon roared at me. She might dislike Wyatt but she still cares for the father of our children.

No. I am not killing the puppet master.

Kill the puppet.

What do you think the flames are for?

I smirked as I watched them start to melt through the illusion version of me. She crashed through another wall, running away or rather flying above to safety. But there was no safety from my fire.

“I was hoping, ya know, since you’re me and all—I was hoping you would have a change of heart.” The smirk I had evaporated into an angry scowl. My flames grew, rising higher into the sky. “But since you’ve lost your damn mind, I think we’ll have to come up with another solution for you!”

“No!” Her bright blue eyes widened at me. She was absolutely cooked. No matter which direction she went in, my flames were there. “I’m sorry! Rhea made me do it, honest!”

“Oh I bet she had a hand. That’s why I’m making this quick.”

I snapped my fingers and turned my head. One scream escaped her but that was all that was left. My flames ate every part of her existence and licked up her essence. A scream from below caught my attention, snapping my head in the same direction as Barnaby’s tomb.

That must be Rhea.

Unfurling my wings, I gently took off and landed underground. The overgrown forest down below had been cleared out, no doubt by Rhea and the others.

“Why couldn’t you have just brought Rupert here.” Mnemosyne softly asked, stepping out of the shadows. There was anguish in her voice but she still held that book in her hands, ready to use my own past against me.

There’s one.

“You’ve seen all of my history. How often do I take the easiest path?” I asked her from over my shoulder.

“I’m watching your present, and I have to say that you never do.” Theia added in, floating down from the roof. “Seriously, you know what he’s done to Guy, to you and me…why protect a son you never even raised?”

There’s two.

“Why protect a dying father? I thought dragon culture was all about nature taking its course?” she hissed at my words, standing to the side. Of all five, I knew she would be the weakest physically. And that just made her more dangerous.

“Where is Themis?” No answer. Why did I ever try to be friends with them? Their loyalty only extends to themselves.

“I’ll ask you one more time, where is Themis?” As a show of force, I summoned my flames again but stopped once a cramp hit my abdomen. Shit. I probably used too much taking on my double a moment ago.

The more stress I put on my body, the higher a chance it will harm the baby.

I steeled myself, breathing deeply. Control your breathing and you’ll be fine.

“She’s where she needs to be. Which, at the moment I believe, is guarding your husband's wolf half.” Mnemosyne answered. She walked in front of me.

Noa. Dammit, he and Wyatt are not supposed to be separated for long.

“That said, why are you down here if you’re not fighting and not surrendering Rupert?” Theia asked, peering at from a safe distance. At least safe for her mind. After today, after learning about what they’d done to Wyatt?

None of them would ever be safe again.

“Why am I down here?” I turned to her, a slow toothy grin forming on my face. “For someone with the power to see damn near everything at once, you’re pretty blind to something as old as time.”

“What’s that?”

“A distraction.”
