Guy
I nearly lost track of time.
As I glanced up at the sunlight trying to break through the orange clouds, I turned to Noa.
“We gotta go.”
“What’s the rush?” Noa asked as he scribbled something down on a notepad Wyatt had taken.
“The rush is that Rupert’s trial is today, and I’m pretty sure it’s happening right now. I think they had it set for sundown.”
“Damn.” Noa pocketed his notes. “Yeah, we need to go.”
I walked over to him and placed a hand on his shoulder. A second later, we teleported back into Cyran City, right in front of City Hall.
I was surprised by what looked to be a notice board. Brand new and already filled with various objects.
But I’d come back to that later.
Right now, we had to focus on getting to Rupert’s trial.
In the middle of the city, everyone had gathered. It wasn’t hard to make out Sapphyra’s large form among the crowd. Her pink hair and black horns were probably noticeable from space.
That was one of the many things I loved about her.
I started walking toward the trial, but I stopped once I noticed Noa wasn’t following me.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, turning back to him.
“It’s Wyatt. He doesn’t want to go.”
I frowned at his words, but I understood.
“Listen, Wyatt. I know you can hear me. This isn’t about you right now. It’s about Sapphyra and it’s about your son. And technically about my father. Goddess, that’s still weird to think about.” I shook my head and kept going. “Anyway, we can sit and talk about you healing from trauma, but we can’t do that without her, and you know that.”
I stopped, giving him time to process what I’d just said.
Noa shook his head, a frown forming on his rugged features.
“He’s a stubborn son of a bitch. He’s not even letting me teleport us over there.”
I tapped my chin, then shrugged.
“Okay. I guess that means I’ll just have to carry you.”
Noa took a step back. His eyes widened in alarm as he glanced down at his feet. I could see the vein in his neck throbbing from the strain.
“He’s fighting me really hard! I don’t think this is a good idea.”
“I get that,” I said, continuing to walk toward him. “But right now, he doesn’t really get a choice. He wants to distract himself with monoliths and experiments, but he doesn’t want to get closure with his wife and his son? Yeah, no. We’re not doing that today.”
Noa took another step back and tripped over my tail. Before he could hit the ground, my tail looped around his waist, and I took off into the sky quick, fast, and in a hurry.
I didn’t stop until I landed next to Sapphyra, but I was careful to make sure my body was between Noa and her.
“Hey, babe,” I said softly, turning toward her.
Her eyes landed on me first. Then she smiled, eyes going all soft with love.
Gosh, she was so pretty.
But then that pretty face took a turn when she saw Wyatt. She looked like someone had kicked her puppy and stolen her lunch money.
Wyatt, for his part, flinched. I could see his eyes changing back and forth with Noa’s, like they were both fighting for control. It looked like Noa was going to win, at least for now, which was good.
They needed to be here for this.
“The trial is about to start,” Sapphyra softly said. “You haven’t missed anything yet.”
“Well, he certainly missed something,” a familiar voice called out.
“Voss?” I raised a brow, turning toward him.
He certainly looked different. Normally, I would say appetizing or delicious, but lately my taste had been all about my angel.
Still, he looked really damn good.
Wait.
I noticed the name tag on his chest.
He beamed brightly, flipping his hair over his shoulder.
“You’re damn right I did. You’re looking at the new Guard Master for Cyran City.”
I turned toward Sapph with a raised brow.
“Did you get the system back? Can I be a superhero again?”
“Easy, Guy. Let’s save the questions for after Rupert’s trial, okay?”
“Oh. Sorry about that,” I sheepishly apologized.
She had a new way to give out classes again. That meant I could be back. Guy Dynamo could come back.
Gosh, that would be great.
I tried to contain my excitement. Today was not a day to be cheerful and bubbly. It was hard, but I could still do it.
Sapphyra’s fingers intertwined with mine, and we took a seat. She reached over, trying to place a reassuring hand on Noa’s shoulder, but he flinched at her touch and yanked himself away.
The heartbreak on her face damn near broke me.
“It’s going to be okay, angel,” I whispered in her ear, squeezing her hand gently to reassure her.
“Yeah,” she choked back a sob. “I know.”
That was all I could get out of her. Not that I could blame her, with all the trauma she was going through.
Not forgetting my other mate, I reached over and squeezed Noa’s hand, knowing Wyatt could feel me.
“I shouldn’t be here,” he whispered in my ear.
“Deal with it,” I whispered back. “I don’t know what you’re going through in your mind right now, but I know that if you need support—and you damn sure look like you need it—this is the place you’ll get it.”
I lifted his hand and kissed the back of his palm.
It warmed my heart because that brought a small smile to his face.
Soon, one of the city officials whose name I couldn’t remember for the life of me stood up and took the stage next to Rupert’s kneeling body.
“We are here today for the trial of Rupert Domingo. Once the leader of Cyran City, he now stands as a disgraced tyrant on trial for his crimes against his own people. Is there anyone here who stands in his defense?”
Not a peep from the crowd.
Sapphyra squeezed my hand, and I felt a tremor in Wyatt.
Rupert shrugged. Knowing him, he would probably prefer to defend himself.
Then a voice I hadn’t heard in quite some time broke free from the crowd, and someone dropped onto the stage.
“I’ll defend him!”
We all turned our heads and collectively gasped as Barbie appeared, standing next to Rupert.
