Sapphyra

The first thing I questioned when I saw the blood at my feet was: where the hell is the hospital?

That should have been the first thing I rebuilt after all the chaos.

I flew back to the med bay with Guy on my tail. I hated having to leave Wyatt behind, but he knew this was more important. Plus, between him and Rupert, the two of them would be able to come up with something to get to safety.

And if not safety, then at least control of the situation.

I landed back at Beacon in a flash and headed to the med bay. It really hadn’t been cleaned up since Rupert was last in here, and I chastised myself for not taking care of that sooner.

Though I laid back on one of the empty tables, my tail grabbed the bucket and mop and started to clean up. Just something about the filth around here made me itch.

Guy looked at me, and I could swear he wanted to yell, but he wouldn’t. Not with me in such a critical condition.

“Are you seriously cleaning right now?!” he asked, his face getting redder by the minute.

“Yes, I’m cleaning right now. I can multitask!”

I lay back on the table and hooked myself up to the machines that barely had any power left. The generator must be on its last legs by now.

Damn.

“Sapphyra, you do not need to be cleaning right now. You need to be worried about what’s going on inside of you.”

I sighed and changed out of my bloody clothes.

“Yeah, I know. But I think I already know what’s happening down there, and it’s bad, but not as bad as you think. In fact, I feel like you’re probably going to be happy. The only one happy right now.”

He raised a brow and took the mop from my tail, taking over my cleaning duties.

“What do you mean?” he asked, furrowing his brow as he set about cleaning for me.

“You’re doing that wrong. It’s counterclockwise.”

He frowned at me again, mouth clearly shaping around some type of insult before he held it back.

“What I mean is that I’m pretty sure that was implantation bleeding.”

“Okay, but what difference does that make? Bleeding is bleeding, right? And you’re pregnant, so bleeding isn’t good.”

I narrowed my eyes at him and sighed, trying to remember that this was his first pregnancy firsthand. At least, it was his first with me.

“Guy, implantation bleeding usually means that another baby is trying to attach itself where it needs to be. Now, what could that mean if I’m already pregnant?”

I looked at him expectantly, like a kindergarten teacher calling on her student. He was a little slower than the rest of his classmates, but he’d get there. And he’d be happy once he got there.

I let him stew for a minute while he continued to mop the wrong way.

Then the mop dropped from his hands, the pole rattling against the sterile tiles.

He looked at me, eyes wide with shock.

I nodded.

He jumped into the air and fist-pumped so adorably that I clapped when he came back down.

“You are…never change, Guy. Please never change.” I laughed a little.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” He quickly raised his palms and tried to get his cool factor back. “It’s just… I’m excited.”

“Oh, I can tell.”

He blushed and scratched the back of his head.

Then, just as fast as the excitement came, it died back down.

“What’s wrong?” I asked him, raising a palm to cup his cheek.

“I’m going to be a dad.”

“Yes. I mean, you’re already a dad technically, but—” I motioned to the bed Rupert once laid in.

He shook his head.

“We don’t talk about that one.”

I laughed to myself.

“Okay, but you’re already a dad to this one as well.” I ran my hands over my still flat belly.

He gave me a measured look and nodded.

“I know. But I don’t know. I guess I’m a little bummed.”

I leaned all the way back as far as I could on the bed and gave him a serious what-the-fuck look.

“No, no, not like that. I’m happy!” He quickly waved his hands. “But I don’t really have anyone to go tell.”

Oh my god.

“Come here.”

I pulled him into a hug and rubbed his back soothingly.

“I mean, that’s technically not true.” He technically had his parents. Silla and Corre seemed like they’d make great grandparents.

“I’m not exactly ready to go talk to them yet. Not in a way that would make all of this make sense.”

“I know, but at some point you’re going to have to bring up the conversation to them. In fact, we’re going to have to tell everyone in Cappville what happened.”

Two million people…just like that, I knew that was going to be one hell of a tough conversation.

But it needed to happen.

They deserved to know. And Guy’s parents deserved to know that their little boy was still alive.

“Sapph, what if they don’t want me?” his voice was small, it broke me.

“It’s one thing being raised with a psychopath that is Rupert. And Barbie too, I guess. It’s all still a little confusing. But if I meet them and somehow get their memories back, what if they remember they didn’t want me?”

I wished I had the answers for him.

I wished I knew exactly what to say that would let all his fears go and give him nothing but confidence, no matter which way the pendulum swung.

But all I could say was, “You’ll never know if you don’t even try.”

Was it corny? Yes.

But was it truthful? Also yes.

He groaned and pulled away from me.

“I’ll think about it.”

“That’s all I can ask.”

“Now talk to System and figure out if it’s one baby or two,” he said, a little too excitedly for my taste.

“You better hope it’s one!”

I could see it in Guy’s eyes. He was probably already planning genders and occupations for the baby. But at the end of the day, I think he was a lot more like me. He would definitely go with the flow, no matter what was happening.

“All right, all right.” I waved him off. “System, can you please confirm my suspicions that implantation bleeding happened and that I am now carrying Guy’s baby?”

[Secondary pregnancy confirmed. Congratulations. Do you think you can keep your legs a little closed now?]

“You know what? Fuck you.” It’s not like I haven’t been trying!

[By the way, there’s something else you should know. When you almost passed out earlier, that wasn’t just the baby telling you to sit your ass down.]

I gulped, trying to keep my expectations even, knowing how much of a sassy pants my System could be.

“Explain.”

[I didn’t want to say anything while you were talking with your mom, but that’s when the symptoms first started showing. And then, once you got to the trial, they exacerbated themselves. Your body has been fighting a war on two fronts. Adding a second baby might seem like a happy occasion, but right now, it’s to your detriment.]

My blood ran cold, and Guy came over to me, squeezing my hand while I listened to her deliver this awful message.

“So what are you saying?” I asked, unable to swallow the ball of anxiety trying to run down my throat.

[What I’m saying is that your body is fighting a war on multiple fronts. Not only are you pregnant with two children, your body is also fighting a lethal amount of Dragonsbane running around your system.]

“What? I haven’t ingested any Dragonsbane, and I haven’t been afflicted with it, so what the hell?”

[You have. You just don’t remember it.]

My blood ran cold.

[Guy, now would be a good time for you to come clean.]

“What are you talking about?” I whispered, unable to breathe properly with this news.

I turned to Guy expectantly.

His skin paled, drained of any bravado and happiness faster than I could blink. And when he opened his mouth and told me the words I didn’t think I ever wanted to hear from him, I think this was finally the day I turned my back on Wyatt.
