Wyatt

On some level I knew that this was inevitable. That one day all my karma would catch up to me, yet I was nothing if not prepared. That was one of the things Dante drilled into me as a child. Prepare for anything, even the unexpected.

Which was complete and utter bullshit but I mastered it anyway.

“Are you done daydreaming or have you actually thought of a plan on how to escape this blasted bubble?” Barnaby…no, Rupert prattled on beside me. Barnaby was a name reserved for the little one I’d buried with my wife, not this cretin to my right.

“I’ve thought of three plans. None of them involve you and your mouth.”

A low chuckle grated on my nerves. But it didn’t come from him, it came from his kidnapper.

“Whatever plans you think you’ve made, they won’t help you here. As soon as Sapphyra is stabilized she will build that prison and happily lock you up in it.” Barbie’s smile gripped something feral in me.

I’m gonna rip that bitches throat out. Shift, let me do it.

“How do you plan on doing that exactly? We can’t teleport out and we can’t claw our way out either.”

“You’re the one who said you’d thought of three ways to get out!”

“And all three involve patience and timing. I swear, it’s like you have no eye for tactics at all.”

“My tactics are simple but they work. Go for the throat.”

I shook my head at his barbaric plan. I’d let him drive our body into this mess to begin with, functioning off of pure rage and yet it did nothing but set us exactly where Barbie wanted us. But perhaps that was for the best.

The crowd of onlookers cared more about Rupert’s death than his imprisonment. As I listened to Barbie plead his case, I felt something tug inside my chest. Worry, anger and finally heartbreak. I placed a trembling hand over my clenching stomach.

“Mate!”

“She’s fine. She’s with Guy—”

Is what I started to say until I saw him fly back to the audience and take his seat. To say he looked glum was an understatement.

“Barbie.” The official from earlier came back.”We will place them both in holding cells in a guard tower for the night. In the meantime, please leave everything to us.”

Barbie’s eye twitched. A crack in her perfect facade.

“What?” She asked, incredulously.

“This is our city. The fate of these men is up to our justice system. And though we appreciate your information and you speaking on Rupert’s behalf, ultimately you are not necessary to their outcome.”

I could kiss that old man if I wasn’t so worried about Sapphyra. If only I could ask Guy directly.

“We have a mate bond. All you have to do is reach out to him telepathically.”

“It can’t be that simple. Otherwise we would have done it already…right?”

“Only one way to find out.”

I’ll be damned. It was exactly that simple. I thought of him and just like answering a phone call, Guy picked up.

“What do you want, Wyatt?” I know we haven’t always been on the best of terms but that was certainly a rough greeting, even for me.

“I want to know about Sapphyra. Why do you look so melancholy?”

“Because I told her what you did.”

I gave him a second because that was a very vague statement and I had a very long list of sins.

“About the dragonsbane in her eye. Wyatt, goddammit man. I really wish you hadn’t done that.”

“What’s wrong with her? We feel something sour happening in the mate bond.”

“That would be her crashing the fuck out because her babies are in jeopardy.”

My blood turned to frost and the air left my lungs.

“What are you talking about?!” I demanded.

“The dragonsbane you put in her eye when she was in big dragon mode didn't take effect then, but it’s damn sure taking effect now. It’s killing her and them, Wyatt.” Guy said with a note of finality.

Noa howled in my ear, rage and anguish pressed on top of us like a suffocating pillow.

“And the two people she needs the most can’t come help her.” Guy added bitterly. “She doesn’t want us around and can you blame her? Look what we’ve done to her.”

“Wait…did you say babies, as in plural?”

I caught Guy smiling, quick and small.

“When the hell did you have time to—” The hotel in Cappville. That’s the only timing that made sense but it was so recent! I knew she was still fertile but could her gestation time be affected by the system's remnants in her body? Perhaps the emotional triggers or the dragonsbane still dancing in her blood. Any number of reasons, not much I could do about it now I suppose.

“The one highlight of my day until it was snatched away from me. Yeah. She’s carrying another pup. This one is mine.” He sighed and leaned forward in his seat. “A lot of good it does me to know I’m expecting when my mate wishes me dead.”

“She doesn’t wish us dead. She wishes we would ask before we act. Not a hard fucking concept.”

Noa may be crude but he had a point.

“Right. Sit back, I’ll get out of here and—”

“And do what? She doesn’t want to see you right now. Hell, I barely wanna see you right now.”

“If you’d let me finish. I mean to say that I will find a way to use the frozen Monolith above Cyran City to remove the poison in her body.” I’d been working on the equations needed in my spare time. Monoliths were living bodies of energy that had once been human—at least that is what my findings have taught me. Their energy signatures are nearly identical to Sapphyra’s own. Naturally there is a way to use it to heal her, considering dragons all have regenerative properties on their own.

But I’ll never get to heal her if I’m stuck in prison.

“Rupert.” I glanced at him. He didn’t acknowledge me but I knew he was listening. “When they move us to the holding cell, I’ll escape. I need to take care of your mother.”

His ears twitched. For all his bravado, I know Rupert cares about Sapphyra on some level. Her love is infectious like that.

“No.” Guy blasted in my head. “No jail breaks. You need to sit your ass in there until some time has passed. Not just for what you did to Sapph but to show that you can hold yourself accountable for your crimes.”

I narrowed my eyes on him.

“I’m the only one that can—”

“You’ll walk me through what I need to do or I will personally throw you back in prison every time you escape. Is that understood because I’m not repeating myself.”

Damn. Using my own words against me. I respect it.

“Change of plans Rupert. I’m going to trust my mate with this.”

“Guy?” Rupert sneered at the name. “He’s an idiot.”

“He’s also your father in law.” The corner of my mouth ticked up as Rupert made gagging noises.

“Whatever. Just let me know when the breakout is happening. And I get the left half of the room.”

“Fine.”

“Alright Guy. Listen closely…”
