Barbie
They blocked me. I can’t believe that these idiots blocked my plan. They claimed I’m not a citizen of Cyran? ME!? Are you kidding me? And then they go and commit the greatest sin against me.
They let some weak, pretty boy guard allow my son and ex to escape prison!
He’s not your son. You stole him. Zeke firmly reminded me mentally. I scowled at him as we lay in the grass half dressed. His arm wrapped protectively around my waist kept me in a state of infuriating calm.
“Get out of my head. You know I hate it when you read my mind.” We’d been over this a dozen times.
“Maybe if your thoughts weren’t so loud, I wouldn’t be able to hear them so easily.” He chuckled and tucked a stray strand of hair behind my ear and my bottom lip trembled.
Smacking his hand away, I swiftly moved away from him, pretending that I didn’t miss his embrace.
With a huff, he moved with me, no doubt exasperated with my quest for revenge against his great-uncle, Wyatt.
“You know, it’s rude to fantasize about another man, especially when that man is my family.” He paused, adding quietly, “and by extension yours too.”
“Ohoho, hell no! I am not claiming him based on some carnal connection we have.” I pointed a finger at him, pushing him back—only because he allowed it. “Wyatt is the devil and—”
“And what does that make you? An angel?” Zeke snorts, crossing his arms over his sizable pecs. “Hate to break it to you, but you are not the hero in this story. Neither of you are.”
And here I thought the mate bond would keep him so easily manipulated.
“No rose-colored glasses for you, hm?” I smirked, pulling my clothes back into place.
“I’m an honest man. And I’m telling you, as your man, that if you want him to fail then just sit back and watch. My grandad used to tell me all the time about how badly Wyatt fumbled whenever his wife got involved.” Zeke yawned and threw a ratted hoodie over his head.
“I know that. You don’t have to remind me of how blind he is for her.” I mumbled, recalling how he left me at the altar on our wedding day for her.
“I wouldn’t leave you waiting. You know that, don’t you?” Zeke murmured, pulling me flush against his chest. Biting the inside of my cheek, I held back my emotions. This stupid mate-bond is distracting me. I have plans…but everytime he touches me I lose another hour of my life ,wailing like a banshee beneath his powerful hips.
I shake my head and push away from him, breaking the cycle.
“Tell me about the person who freed you from your prison.” Avoid eye contact Barbie, do not give in.
“You’re changing the subject.” He cracked his neck and leaned against a nearby half-crumbled wall. “Besides, I already told you. Tall, white hair, red eyes. Hard to miss him, even with a mask on. He talked like he came straight out of the south.”
He paused a moment before quietly adding, “he burst into that cave and ripped out a chunk of rock big enough for us all to get through. But only I went.”
Any other time, I’d ask him why. Right now we have more important things to do though, like spying on our enemies.
“I’m surprised you know much about that, considering you were held underground for so long.” I squat low, watching Wyatt and Rupert leave Beacon from across the street. Here I am, feet buried in the muck and disgusting bugs all but for a glimpse of how to take them down.
They spoke softly to each other but Wyatt was in deep distress. His white hair stuck to his forehead and he punched a wall. Rupert rolled his eyes and walked off without him, calling out something over his shoulder.
“Sapphyra is sick.” Zeke announced in my head. I was just about to tell him to get out of my head but not for this. For once, I’m glad he’s disobedient.
“How sick? What happened? You can hear all that?”
Zeke nodded and flexed his claws. Ah, yes, werewolf enhanced hearing. His frown disturbed me.
“She’s dying…and Wyatt is the one who’s killed her.”
I quickly shoved my fist into my mouth, biting down on it to muffle my scream of anguish.
“I was right! I knew it was only a matter of time before he suffocated her to death! Oh no…poor Sapphyra.”
“There’s more to it.” Zeke added, closing his eyes in contemplation. Why was he so sad?
“What aren’t you telling me?”
“She’s pregnant. Two pups. Apparently Wyatt dosed her with dragonsbane when she went monster and tore the city apart. Ten doses to be exact.”
Ten fucking doses? Even I’m not that cruel.
I sighed, running my fingers through my hair. The worry was gnawing away at my soul, what little of it was left anyway.
“I wanted to be right, but not like this.”
“What do you plan to do now?” Zeke asked, placing his hefty head on my shoulder. Absent-mindedly, my hand reached up to scratch behind his ears. Normally I’d stop myself, but I’d say he’s earned this simple pleasure.
“Now? I enact my plan. Admittedly, the plan would have taken a lot longer if not for her wish board in town square.”
Zeke scrunched up his nose, confusion in his eyes.
“The what board?”
I hid my smile behind my hand.
“Just follow me. We’ll take a route away from them and meet back up at the city square during nightfall.”
“Okay? Wouldn’t you rather check in on her?” His nose turned up as he sniffed the air a few times. “Oh…oh I know that scent.”
He nodded towards Beacon.
By now, Wyatt had vanished into the city, no doubt following Rupert. I can imagine why. It must feel like shit when consequences finally catch up to you.
Couldn’t be me.
With a soft hum, I stood up and dusted myself off, turning towards Beacon, a determined look in my eye.
“Alright. She’s not going to like it but I think I know a way to smooth things over so she doesn’t sic her pets on me.”
Zeke’s eyes widened, he tilted his head to the side.
“You’re really about to tell her that?”
I smirked, “just watch me.”
