Sapphyra
“What do you mean it wasn’t about me? Phereda said you—-”
He snorted. “Fuck her. Her bullshit prophecies and fated mates have caused nothing but trouble for me and my kin.” Even though he says that, he never moves his hand from my belly, almost like he knows it belongs there.
“...I hate that I agree with you. Also, you should tell me your name.”
“Why? As soon as you’re all better I’m leaving and we both go back to how things were before.”
“Okay but it’s rude to not know the name of the person touching me so intimately.” I placed my hand over his and struggled to sit up. Ugh, I’m not even showing yet and I’m already wobbly. Being pregnant sucks, how could I have forgotten?
“Easy. Woman, lay back down before you undo all the work I just did.”
I scoffed and sat up anyway. “You should know by now that I have a problem with authority. Mate bonds are like, the second highest authority I know of.”
“Hmph. And the first?”
“My momma.” He nodded, understanding instantly.
We sat in awkward silence for a while before he finally relented with a sigh.
“Erek. Short for Erekardos.” My eyes widened and I scooted back just a hair. That name practically rhymed with Ferekdos.
“Stop moving. You act like I’m ‘bout to eatcha alive, girl.” If the monstrous shoe fits…
“You’re related to him? To Ferekdos?”
“Yeah.” One word, that's all I got. The look in my eye said that’s not good enough. “He’s my twin brother.”
“Twins.” The word rolled off my tongue as my horns started vibrating. Erek’s head snapped up, glancing at the doorway. His nostrils flared and I’m ashamed to say it but I sank into him because I knew who it was before he did.
“Don’t hurt them.” I mumbled. I know he heard me when he placed an arm on my shoulder and pulled me flush against his chest.
“For your stress levels…I’ll give it a shot.” Yeah, that’s what I figured he would say.
I closed my eyes as footsteps came down the hallway, two sets. I knew one like the back of my hand.
Wyatt.
I heard a gasp but it wasn’t his. Rupert. Great, my family broke out of jail.
“You two better not have hurt Voss.” I warned them. “I was just starting to not hate that guy.”
“He’s fine.” Rupert answered. “Just taking a nap in my cell. He looked all cozy too. Speaking of cozy…”
“Mind your business, boy.” Erek threatened with a strong drawl.”I’m only here to try and stall the poison.” His gaze landed on a very pissed off Wyatt. “Somebody had to step up and help her.”
Oh no. Why the fuck did he say that?!
Wyatt adjusted glasses that weren’t there but truthfully I think he just wanted to flip off Erek. Wyatt ignored him and focused on me with big soft amber eyes. I would not melt for those eyes, not this time.
“Sapph. Princess, how are you?”
I shrugged. “Bout as well as can be, considering you did the thing you weren’t supposed to do..again.”
He frowned. “I know. I panicked.”
“You always panic. That doesn’t mean you have to go to such extreme lengths to try and save me.”
Wyatt took a step forward, arms outstretched towards me. Just as soon as he started, he stopped. His arms dropped, fists clenched. Is he always going to be like this? What the hell did Rhea do to him?
Now his eyes were on Erek.
“Who is he?”
“First name Nunya, last name Business.” Oh, Erek. You’re certainly a character.
Wyatt smirked ever so softly and folded his arms across his chest. I know that look, he’s sizing up Erek. Oh this is gonna be bad.
Meanwhile my son is just watching this with the most amused look in his eye. All he needs is some popcorn.
“So he’s the real mate?” Of course that’s what came out of Wyatt’s mouth. “Classy. Cowboy is a new flavor and you always did like southern boys.”
Erek’s grip tightened ever so slightly on me, I could feel his tail wrap around mine—not for comfort but to hold him down.
“I’d advise you to be careful with the words you throw out around me. I tend to shoot first and ask questions later.” Erek let out a soft hiss at the end of his sentence. It reminded me of an alligator’s hiss.
But why did it make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside?
“I’d like to see you fucking try and keep me away from my wife, lizard breath.” He took a step forward.
Who was this man and when did he replace my husband? More importantly, why did Rupert find this moment to be the best time to mention the elephant in the room?
“The same wife he poisoned with ten doses of Dragonsbane…to the eye, mind you.”
I shot daggers at him. I hated his triumphant little smile. If I had time to reach over and choke him I would…but I’m too busy holding Erek back.
“You fucking what?!” Erek snarled, barely held back by my arms. Rupert smugly stepped back, watching it all unfold. I’m gonna kill him.
“I had to! She was pregnant and destroying the city.” That was Wyatt to a tee.
“You didn’t think to lead her out of the city? Huh? What about trusting her fucking dragon?! None of that shit occurred at all to you, motherfucker?! Ten doses—I don’t even know how big those measurements are but any amount times ten is damn near a death sentence to us, let alone a pregnant dragon!”
Erek was foaming at the mouth and I couldn’t blame him.
Wyatt’s gaze hardened but there was a flicker of doubt in his eyes.
“Erek, that’s enough.” I said in his ear, pulling him back. “Whoa!” He swiftly picked me up bridal-style and placed me on his lap. He tucked me under his wing and I hate that it was so comfortable, like the world's best blanket.
“I’m not gonna kill the father of one of your eggs. But I’ll damn sure break every bone in his body if he tries to touch you.”
At this point I’m not sure who’s more possessive, him or Wyatt.
I couldn’t see him from beneath the wing so I tugged it down, tucking it beneath my chin.
“He’s not gonna touch me right now.” I murmured softly. On some level he seems to be repulsed by me. “He should absolutely still be in jail. Why are you even here, Wyatt?”
“I felt you in here.” Wyatt tapped his chest, right over his heart. “Not sure if it’s the mate bond but all I felt from you was hatred.”
Probably directed at him.
“Gee, I wonder why.” I narrowed my eyes at him and coughed up a little blood. Erek dabbed at my mouth, wiping the blood away.
Rupert’s eyes widened and he slowly started backing out of the room, a frown permanently etched into his handsome face.
“You’re…you’re dying?” Wyatt whispered with haunted eyes.
“You didn’t know?” I bit back. “You’re the man that knows everything, aren’t you?”
“I didn’t know this would happen. I swear, Sapph, I swear on my life I didn’t know. If I had, then I never would have given you any at all.”
I could hear the pleading in his voice, the desperation. He was probably telling the truth.
“It’s a very good thing I’m planning on leaving again when you heal up, Sapph. Otherwise I’d have killed this pretender for his crimes.” Erek grumbled softly.
“While I appreciate the display of irrational macho-ness, I’m gonna need you to calm down—”
“No.” He stared me dead in the eye.
“It’s not his first time doing this and it won’t be his last.” I shrugged. Wyatt has a problem and his problem is always going to be me.
“Then I need to be twice as mad for you because you can’t afford to be. Someone that is your mate, your husband? They don’t do the bullshit he did. Fear drives a man to be courageous but it drives a little boy to be reckless.” He spit out those words with a wisdom neither Wyatt nor I could ever hope to achieve.
I wanted to argue back, stand up for Wyatt. He even glanced at me like he expected me to come to his aid.
“How many times have I defended you, Wyatt?” I sighed and shook my head. “I can’t defend you, not this time. We lost our baby before and that was just awful luck…but this?”
My trembling fingers spread across my belly and I rubbed it protectively.
“This one is on you if anything happens.” A sob broke free from me and Erek pulled me into him again, covering me with his wing.
He barked one word to Wyatt. “Go.” He didn’t raise his voice, Wyatt was already moving backwards towards the door. His eyes never left me until he rounded a corner.
“I’ll fix this. I swear I will.” Wyatt promised right before he ran.
That’s when Guy walked in with a grin that immediately dropped when he saw me and Erek bundled up together.
“Uh…did I miss something?”
