Guy
I didn’t think first. I just swept up Silla and ran. No extra speed like with Sapph, no hovering. What the hell is wrong with me? It’s like my powers don’t work when I’m on my own.
The creature growled behind me as my legs pumped for dear life. Why did it sound closer than before? Was it running too? Can’t turn and look—I guarantee it that something bad will happen. Silla clung to me, burying her three-fingered hands into my shoulder but her eyes were glued to the thing chasing us.
Who could blame her. If something like that happened to Sapph—or anyone I cared deeply about I’d…I don’t know what I do.
Because I’m pathetic, a weak descendant who can’t fly or breath fire—stop that! My teeth clench as I chase the bad thoughts away with a shotgun.
Wait!
As if someone slapped me with a fish, I remember I’m fucking armed and dangerous. My hand grips my sub-machine gun as I dive into one of the empty rooms, tossing Silla onto a mattress. Her eyes widen as she takes in my stance, legs level with my shoulders, hands steady as I take aim at the door.
The next thing to come through, gets a bullet.
I heard its roar around the corner, closing in any second now. The sound of its fat feet hitting the see-through floor set my nerves on edge.
Its shadow came, then its body. I fired and my finger never left the trigger as a roar for survival ripped from my soul.
“Corre!” Silla whined as I made swiss cheese out of her mate. I hated to do it but it was him or us. By the time his body dropped to the ground, I almost had a sense of relief wash over me. But any hope I had turned into dread when Corre's body twitched and started rising. Each hole slowly started closing itself before my eyes.
Fuck me sideways!
I grabbed Silla again, tossing her over my shoulder to run as I put a few more bullets into it, keeping it down. My clip would empty before it was dead—if that was even possible but that wasn’t my biggest fear.
Dying before warning Sapph, was.
Sapphyra
My blood ran cold as gunshots rang out. It was faint but I knew which direction it came from. The way Guy and Silla went. I didn’t give Wyatt a chance to protest—and I was so thankful that he didn’t—we were on the move. Each door became a blur in my peripheral.
“He’s fine.” Wyatt barked like it was such an obvious thing.
“You have no way of knowing that, Wyatt.” My heart leaped into my throat as I ran. I’ve never been the fastest person but I used to be at least as fast a car at top speed—on foot anyway.
“No, but I know you. You don’t pine for weak men, Sapphyra.” He wasn’t wrong but we didn’t have time to discuss it. Every second mattered for Guy and Silla. I just prayed Wyatt was right.
“Princess!”
“What is it now?!”
“Easy. Look at what you’re doing right now.”
“Getting my cardio in for the day?” I gasped for air between big strides. If the ceiling was higher than double my height, I’d just super jump the whole way.
“You’re still thinking like a superhero!” I hated that he was right. He’s going to nag me about this until I die or get my wings back.
“What would you have me do, Wyatt? Mop my way to him?”
“You have a super breath, use it!” He glared at me, frustrated with my shortcomings. Honestly, I’m pretty frustrated with them too but right now he wasn’t making any sense.
“None of my powers can help me run faster, Wyatt! My void is empty, I can’t spit up anything with Recycle. I—I do have…shit.”
I’m such a moron.
I grabbed a mattress out of a nearby room, sat on top of it and aimed my face at the floor—facing the opposite direction I needed to go.
“Purification Breath!” Hot white and slightly sparkly smoke pressurized and blasted in a beam at the floor, pushing me back so fast that I nearly got whiplash.
“Never doubt yourself honey.”
I flicked his smug ass off, unable to fuss at him or kiss him for being right.
It was honestly pretty fun! The only problem was that it didn’t come with brakes!
We smacked into two objects hard, knocking them off balance and me off the mattress and into the air. Losing concentration made it impossible to keep up the purification breath, so I came to a hard stop—making a me-sized hole in a nearby wall.
“Ow…” I moaned softly, feeling my spine try to rearrange itself in real time. Trying to move at all only made it worse, my ass was stuck for now. Blinking at the sparkly-white chaos down the hallway, I raised a brow at what I saw.
Silla was kissing a blushing Corre on the ground. Wyatt was smacking an incapacitated Guy awake…much harder than necessary. I could hear the slaps echoing through the halls.
“Ow–hey what the fuck?! Stop that!” Guy yelled, bolting upright.
“Oh good…you’re still alive.” Coming from anyone else, that might have been relief talking…but not from Wyatt. He didn’t have to make his distaste so obvious.
“Yeah, you guys alright? I uh–blurrp–heard gunshots. Excuse me, that was gross.” Not just my spine—now my stomach was in knots too. Is this a cooldown effect? Sounds about right so I’ll leave it at that.
“Great one—er, I mean Sapphyra! You saved my dear Corre!” At least she corrected herself.
“Wait, what?” Guy's hand was on his gun, eyeing Corre suspiciously. He didn’t intend to shoot him…did he?
Wyatt stroked his chin as he examined the Shroomies. I could hear him put on his detective hat as he pointed at something on the floor I couldn’t see.
“Green goo and bullets…Sapph, I think your purification breath might have just given me a major piece to this puzzle.”
“Purification breath? Like the one she used at town hall?” Guy’s eyes widened but I couldn’t figure out why.
“Will someone explain what just…what ju…happened—” White spots danced in front of my eyes and I tumbled out of the wall, smacking the ground hard enough to rattle my teeth. I heard them calling me but they all seemed so small, so far away.
I faded away, finally realizing how tired I actually was.
