The way back to Beacon headquarters was an eye opener. Now that we were travelling in the daylight, it was easy to pick out all the broken cars and buildings. Even with giant mushrooms growing through the wreckage, there was still a lot to work with.
My thoughts drift as Guy flies us back, low to the ground.
“Penny for your thoughts, beautiful? Never used a penny by the way, it's something I read in a book once though.” Guy asked, searching my thousand yard stare for something. I snapped out of it and I fought the urge to sit my forehead against his like I’d done too many times to count.
It’s too natural being with him.
“There’s a lot to clean up around here and I’ve been neglecting it. Too busy playing rebel leader and not knowing what the hell is going on.”
“You’re handling it well as far as I can see but uh, you know you can lean on me right? I’m more than just a sexy transport.” I rolled my eyes as we landed. The way my body hummed against his abs, If I wasn’t careful I’d be taking a different kind of ride.
“I know that. I’m just saying, I need to work on restoring the buildings around here. Also the power too. Damn, I kinda wish I was an engineer.”
“Isn’t that what you do already with your recycling powers?”
“Nah. I can take what's broken and fix it if the pieces are there—maybe change the shape or function—but I can’t create anything.”
“I love your ambition but you don’t have to do it all. We can get help.” He hadn’t dropped me yet. Despite the meager distance between our heights, I was a foot taller than him, I still felt like a dainty princess in his arms.
“Put me down.”
He closed one eye, smirking at me. “Say please.”
“When pigs fly!” I chuckled, scrambling to get out of his arms. He let me down, sucking his teeth in disappointment. I knew he wanted more time with me but time wasn’t a luxury, not while Rupert and finding Wyatt’s body hung over our heads like fucking doomsday clocks.
We stood outside of Beacon headquarters, the doors still open the way I left them. For some reason, it hurt going back in. The kind of hurt that you get looking at a neglected pet or plant, like you know you should be doing more but can’t.
“I’m sorry.” I pressed my hand against the doors, walking into more floating dust. At least the darkness was gone thanks to the sun hanging overhead but the emergency lights were still on.
“Okay, Wyatt, we’re here. Tell me where to go.” His gem bounced slightly once I turned to the right, away from the dorms and towards his lab. Of course it was near his workshop.
“You never leave anything to chance, do you…” I let that hang in the air, blocking the memories of our time as heroes as we walked further in.
That ugly burgundy couch was where we used to stay up and watch scary movies. This patio was where we had drinks after a hard fucking battle. And this hallway, it’s where I caught Liam and Vega kissing after fighting a pheromone villain—the whole city was uncomfortably affectionate on that day.
Those two never admitted to it, but I knew and they knew that I knew.
Wyatt's stone grew warmer as we entered his lab. Old experiments, mathematical charts, files typically organized to a tee—they were strewn about like a tornado had come through. It didn’t sit right with me and from the way Wyatt was bouncing on my chest, it didn’t sit well with him either.
“Hang on honey, I’ll fix it. Vacuum…Refurbish.” I emptied out the lab in one breath and put it all back in order with the next. At least it looked neat…and lifeless. Lifeless just like—my eyes drifted down to the gem and my chest tightened.
“Wyatt, where's the power source? How do we recharge this thing? What happens if it goes out—what happens to you?”
My hands tightened around the gem. I’m too fucking young to be a widow, messy relationship aside.
Guy’s hand on my shoulder brought me back to reality but it didn’t stop my gut from lurching.
“Sapph, we’ll find a way to help him. You have my word.” He said, rubbing circles into my shoulder. I wanted to believe him but at the same time a nagging little voice in the back of my head wouldn’t shut up.
What if Guy was just biding his time until Wyatt blinks out of existence? No, that's insane. What the fuck is wrong with me? Guy is wonderful, if anything I'm the bad egg.
I shook my head, clearing the intrusive thoughts away, bumping my knee against a cabinet in the process. “Fuck! Sorry Wyatt. You know how clumsy I am in this lab.”
“It’s fine.” He whispered, appearing out of the gem in a thin ray of dull light.
“Tell me how to charge this thing up, please baby?” I took off the choker, standing next to him with my throat collapsing from anguish.
He nods at the cabinet I just bumped, bending down to point at the one closest to the floor.
“Open this.” I tried tugging it but it wouldn’t budge.
“Not you, princess. It’ll have to be Guy. I built it with your regular strength in mind.” He frowned at me.
“Easy-peasy.” Guy plucked it out like it was a flower from the earth. The inside held a laptop sized case full of small vials. Opening it, I saw four vials of seeds and four vials of green liquid. Just being near it made me a little drowsy.
Dragonsbane.
At least that’s one problem down the drain. Synthesized and seeds to grow it on our own, he really thinks of everything.
I quickly closed the case and turned to Wyatt, “okay, now the charger. Can’t have you passing out on me again. My heart can’t take two attacks in one day.”
I offered him a small smile and he returned it.
Guy shrank back, turning the opposite direction away from us.
“It’s in our bedroom. It’s the—” he blinked out. The gem went ice cold.
“Wyatt?” I whispered, clutching the choker for dear life. My only answer was cold silence.
‘WYATT!!”
