I was already halfway to our bedroom when Guy reached for me. Didn’t have time—had to save Wyatt. The ugly truth was that he was all I had left in this world from the past. Maybe that’s a shackle, maybe it's a rescue but it’s mine.
Wyatt is mine and he always will be.
“Bedroom. Come on Wyatt, don’t give up on me yet baby! Talk to me, where is it? What’s it look like? Give me something !”
Miserable silence. No light, no warmth. He might as well be a paperweight now.
“Fuck!” My tail lashed out around the room, accidentally hitting Guy in the back of the head.
“Shit, Guy, I’m so sorry.” He waved it off and started tearing through our dressers. I took the closet, anything that looked like it could be a charger or have an indent for the choker—it was in my hands. Frustrated, I tossed old boxes and gadgets made by Wyatt—the man loved to take his work home with him.
“This isn’t working.” Grit my teeth, staring at the mess around me, no closer to the solution.
“Sapph, where did you find the choker to begin with?” Guy asked, pulling out the last dresser drawer without a second glance.
“It was in a box on the dresser…” Oh shit, I’m such an idiot! Wyatt, why did you ever marry a meathead like me?!
I grabbed the box it came in, just as Guy picked it up to give it to me. I’d apologize later—right now I needed to save my husband's life. Pressing the choker back into the specific, flat way it was found, I held my breath waiting like my life depended on it.
In this case, Wyatt is my life whether I like it or not.
“Come on…do something.” I whispered, praying for a signal that he was okay. My knees gave out after 5 minutes of waiting. I stopped breathing after 10. This was it. I never got to tell his dumbass goodbye. Fuck me…the tears cascaded down my face as my tail started lashing out in agony. I placed the box down and curled into a ball beside it, content to sit there forever.
It’s what I deserved.
“Sapph, look! It’s lighting up!” Guy smiled, holding it out to me.
Wiping my face quickly, I looked towards it. He was right. Wyatts stone glowed in intervals of 5 seconds then 10 seconds of darkness. He really was charging, just like a phone.
“Oh thank God!” I hugged Guy, throwing my arms around his neck. I needed his touch, needed him to anchor me. Wyatt wasn’t dying—not yet at least. A hysterical laugh poured from me as I let it all crash down on me like a tsunami.
A little over a month and I hadn’t stopped, hadn’t processed this reality. I didn’t have time—fuck me, I still don’t! But I can steal this one moment. I can have some relief even if it’s in the arms of another man.
“So…you got your man back.” Guy softly mumbled, caressing the top of my head. I pulled away from him, frowning.
“Don’t say it like that. Like you’re making me feel ashamed for—”
“Never.” His eyes narrowed on me. “Sapphyra, I will never shame you for loving him. You two are linked through time and experience.”
I raised a brow, tilting my head. Where the hell is he going with this.
Running a hand through his silky black hair, he continues.
“Just don’t shame me for loving you too. And—” he closed the distance between us, cupping my chin between his warm, firm fingers, “make no mistake: I want him saved. I want us to find his body and put him whole.”
I swallowed the fear and arousal growing in my belly. So not the fucking time, body, get it together.
“Why?”
“Because I want him at his peak when I make love to you again. I want him to watch as I take you and put you on the throne you deserve.” His thumb rubbed across my lower lip, making me shiver. “He all but handed you to me on a silver platter last time. Next time though, I’m not waiting on permission.”
Was this really the same Guy? When the fuck did he get so dangerous…so hot? Who am I kidding, it's always been there bubbling beneath the good boy exterior. I’ve just been too distracted to notice this…this hunger in him.
Okay karma, whatever I did to you in a past life to send hot dangerous men my way…I’ll probably do it again, not gonna lie. Thank you.
I cleared my throat and placed my hands on his pecs, pushing him back. Boy, he was sturdy as fuck—I’m in trouble.
“Wrong place and time, Guy.”
His one dimple showed, but I’ll never look at that cute exterior the same way again.
“Right. I get it. Look, today’s a win. Wyatt’s back to charging, soon his ol’ condescending ass will be back before you know it. And we got the Dragonsbane so now we can set traps for the council.”
I squint at him, waiting for a cheeky comment about celebrating. And celebrating with him absolutely meant sex.
“Wanna go to Ernie's to celebrate? There’s still some good booze in there. We could grab Silla and Corre too.”
Oh, okay I can be wrong too. But his idea actually spawned a new one in my head.
“Hm…yes to grabbing them and yes to Ernies. I need to grab a few things from here first but I’ll meet you there, ‘kay?” I kissed his cheek, chuckling at the disappointing whine that followed.
“Fine. But if you’re not there in the next half hour, I’m coming back to get you.” I rolled my eyes and gave him a mock salute.
“Aye-aye captain. Now go.” The only sign that he’d left was the super speed rush of air leaving the room with him.
I kissed Wyatt’s stone and placed him in my pocket. Thanks to the vials of Dragonsbane and a few of the things around the room, I knew what I had to do.
Wyatt once told me I don’t use guns. At the time he was right except for one: tranquilizers. My step father Barry, used to take me hunting—I had a voracious appetite as a kid but I couldn’t stand the blood and gore. Look at how far I’d come from that.
“There you are.” I picked up the gadget Wyatt had made before but couldn’t convince me to use: a suped-up tranq gun fitted for vials just like the one he’d hidden away. Part of me thinks that this is all happening for a reason.
I slide a vial in place into one of the guns and smile as it clicks.
Whatever reason it is, I’m glad it required me and Wyatt to work together. Now, we might actually have a future together. We might actually win.I’m not sure how I—
The sound of a deep, wall shaking growl broke me from my thoughts.
“What the hell?”
I walk out of our bedroom and come face to face with something truly odd: one wolf the size of a horse covered head to toe in midnight black fur with glowing golden eyes.
And it was held on a leash by Rupert.
My heart sank, tears sprang free as his face lit up like a kid on Christmas day.
“No…” I whispered, feeling my heart punch my throat.
“Thank the goddess. I thought that boy would never leave. Hey. Sapph?”
My knees nearly gave out as he stepped towards me.
“Let's have a fucking chat.”
