“Purification Breath!”

I watched and I waited as I sprayed both Oceanus and Tethys down with the white glittery cold breath spewing from me. I never thought this would have so many uses but I'm glad I found another one; changing whatever these two have been back to human.

Around 10 minutes later, they both sit up looking around , blinking in confusion.

“Where are we?" she asked me. Her eyes widened as she took in Guy and I. “You! I remember now, I remember what you did to me and what you did to my husband.”

Speaking of her husband Oceanus, he scrambled to stand in front of his wife, glaring at me and Guy.

“Why did you leave us alive? What do you intend to do with this now?”

“Well honestly that's up to you two.” I answered with a yawn.

They look at each other, then back at me as if testing the waters for something.

“What do you mean it's up to us?”

“I mean exactly what I said. It's up to you two. I have questions for you. You can answer them and then you can go. The deal was that I played the game and I beat you and I did. I don't have to kill you. I don't want to because that's not who I am. Whatever Rupert has put in your heads? Listen to what I'm telling you now because this is the truth, not that statue he put up.”

I could tell they didn't quite believe me but they were alive so they couldn't dispute that. Sitting back on the sidewalk they stayed close together and held hands. If it wasn't for the fact that they just tried to kill us I’d think they’d be really cute—couple goals even.

Honestly they reminded me of the early days of me and Wyatt.

“That is illogical. We show no mercy to our fallen foes.” Oceanus started.

“We’re descendants. Descendants of your glorious race of dragons. Ruthless and efficient, that’s how things have always been.” Tethys added.

My fist clenched, I had to bite my inner cheek to hold back the vitriol piling up in my throat.

“All dragons aren’t like that. In fact, you’re looking at the number one dragon of kindness and mercy.” Guy leaned in, eyes nearly popping out of his head. Wait, is this really so uncommon? Mercy?

“Whoa, Sapph, are you sure you wanna spare these two though? There’s no telling what will happen if they get back to Rupert and regroup.” Guy asks, placing a hand on my shoulder.

“You do not have to worry about that.” Oceanus said, raising a hand. “We lost. To return to him now would be a death sentence.”

Tethys pouts, folding her legs beneath her. “Though now that we’ve lost not only the battle but also a push in our power, what are we to do with ourselves now?”

Words flashed over their heads—[Water Maintenance]. It flashed twice, giving me pause. A new class? This one seems more generalized than mine or Guys. Either way, I’m not offering it to them without all the knowledge they have first.

“Tell you what, since you can’t go back, you could stay on this side. I can even give you some work.” A non-flirtacious wink managed to make them both blush. It shouldn’t surprise me that Tethys nearly passed out.

“Sex work was not my field of expertise but if our dragon goddess insists–”

“Whoa! Hey, hold on, no. I do not insist. That’s not the kind of work I meant. Anyway, just tell me what Rupert had you doing on the council. Maybe from that, I can gain a little insight on why things are the way they are.”

Not that my goggles weren’t good at insight, just not that kind of insight.

Crossing his arms Oceanus goes first.

“He had us manipulate the water in some strange machine of his. It would produce a ghoulish green glow and anything it touched would turn toxic—like a sewer full of chemicals.”

I nodded, watching the pieces fit together.

“And the people he tested it on? Did you see them?” Come on, give me something.

Tethys shook her head and frowned. “No. I’m sorry. He never did live experiments with others watching.”

My eyes drift down to their gills, now tiny slats against their skin. “You sure some of that gunk didn’t get on you two?”

“Oh, no—” Tethys sat up straight.

“We surely would have known.” Oceanus added, dropping some bass in his voice.

“Uh-huh. Then when did your skin turn blue? Because if nothing was wrong with you—my purification breath wouldn’t have changed you back.” I crossed my arms, waiting for the pushback. People don’t like to be told they’re wrong, and sometimes it takes a few tries to drill it into their skull.

“It turned blue after we ate a banquet with High Dragon Rupert. Err….I guess just Rupert now? We’re too disgraced to serve with him.” Tethys mumbled. Oceanus pulled her into a hug, tugging again at my heartstrings.

How many times had Wyatt consoled me like that?

“Beloved, if we changed after eating his food…perhaps Sapphyra has a point.” He spoke softly to her. Her eyes widened, she shakes her head—resistant at first. Eventually the fire in her eyes goes out and her shoulders slump, heavy.

“Yeah, betrayal sucks. I get it. Listen, I don’t know why he poisoned you—maybe to make your powers stronger? Maybe to control you better, who knows.” Standing up, I dust off my pants and hold out my hands for them to shake. “But I can promise you this: if you choose to stay here, I won’t treat you the same way.”

Oceanus raises a brow, “the job that you mentioned? Why would you offer it to strangers like us—whatever it may be. We’ve hurt the creatures here.” He hangs his head low, guilt in his features.

“I am not sure we are worth your mercy.” Tethys added, laying her head on Oceanus' shoulder.

“No one is…”

My breath caught in my throat as the familiar voice called out.

Wyatt appeared, fully formed, no glitches. He smiled softly at me.

“But she still gives it anyway.”
