Guy
I put on a smile for her, even though I was cold on the inside. Wyatt was back, of course he’d come now after all the hard work was done!
No. I shouldn’t think like that. Whatever energy he used to get here, it was worth the wait. It was worth it just to see Sapphyra smiling and crying.
“Wyatt!” Even though he was a hologram, she threw her arms around him, crouching over him gently. Too much pressure and he’d pop, like a grape. Where the hell had that thought come from? I’m not Rupert.
Sighing, I run my hand down my face and throw on a smile towards Tethys and Oceanus.
“Come on. You two have a lot of work to do to obtain redemption. For now though, you’ll be staying with some friends of mine. Two lovely capps called Silla and Corre.”
Oceanus nodded though Tethys stopped, holding her head.
“Something wrong, my love?”
“Corre, that name. I’m not sure why it’s so familiar.” She shakes her head and shrugs, “ignore me. Please, we would love to meet them.”
“Oh! I’ll take you guys!” Sapphyra, remembering she made promises literally minutes ago, runs over. I barely have time to protest before she shoves Wyatt’s box into my hands.
“Hey! Don’t just—”
“Take good care of him! I wanna make sure these two settle in nicely, ‘kay?” How could I resist her, especially after a quick kiss on the cheek.
I wanted to toss it in the air, just to see how far it would go. I’d catch it of course but still…no, that's stupid—plus he hasn’t made me mad enough yet.
I looked at him. He looked at me. We both looked at his box.
The only thing breaking the silence was the sounds of nature. Frogs and mosquitos buzzing around, the sun had finally gone down for the day, meaning most Capps would be more active. I’d found out a while back that they like darkness and moisture, which is why the majority of them live underground.
“Are you done?” Wyatt asked, pulling me out of my thoughts.
“Done with…?” Oh, there's so many ways he could answer this.
“Done standing around like an idiot. We have work to do back in my workshop. Fly us there.”
The nerve of this asshole. Sapph wants me to make nice, so I’ll hold my tongue. For now.
“Yeah. Sure, hold on tight.” I almost super-sped out of there but thought better of it. I might break his stupid box and then Sapph would be miserable and hate me. Plus…he’s annoying and obnoxious—and arguably evil—but I don’t want him dead.
The ride there is still quick but we don’t take the direct route. I fly over Silla and Corre's house, listening in to their conversation.
“They do what, with the mouths on their heads?!” Tethys squealed. I chuckled, flying past them.
“500 meters and you can still hear through the solid wall? Impressive.” Wyatt mumbled from his box.
“Be still my beating heart, was that a compliment?”
“Don’t get used to it.” There was a smirk in there, I could hear it. But of course, he couldn’t just leave well enough alone.
“The only reason this arrangement works is because my body is missing.” He left that hanging in the air, like I didn’t already know I was walking on a tight rope.
“How can I forget when almost every second is spent looking for your body—which by the way—Rupert knows the location of. You were charging when he showed up at Beacon and cornered Sapph.”
“He WHAT!?” Why did hearing him yell make me afraid? I’m not afraid of him…but his wrath and his genius? That would send me into fight or flight.
“I felt the same way but no, he didn’t hurt her. Apparently he’s her number one fan. Wants to see her rise up as a superhero again so he’s sending all his council goons at us. You just met two of them.”
I landed us a few yards away from Wyatt's place. His hologram popped back out, walking just in front of me at a pace not meant for normal people. Hell, I’m not even sure it was meant for me and I have superspeed.
“Tell me everything. Spare no details, no matter how small.” I easily caught up to him, by floating. I did as he asked, telling everything. He didn’t interrupt me until I told him about the wolf under Rupert's control. By now we were in his memorabilia room.
“He had a what?” He whispered. I repeated. I’d never seen someone turn so pale so fast.
“Fuck.” Wyatt pressed his palms against the counter slowly. His forehead vein was throbbing but I couldn’t figure out why.
“Something you wanna share with the rest of the class there?”
“Not in particular.” He grabbed his file out of the stack and took out a picture fitting the description of the wolf I just told him about.
“Holy shit! Is that your family’s wolf or something? That fucker is huge!”
“Sure. Let’s go with that. Are you sure this is the wolf she was talking about?”
“100 percent.” I scratched my head, trying to figure out what the big deal was.
“That’s bad. That’s tremendously bad.” He slid the file and the picture back into its stack.
“Why? Wyatt what aren’t you telling me?” That made him finally look me in the eyes. There was something soft there, something telling. Whatever it was, it drew me in. I stood closer to him, right by his hip.
“Talk to me.”
He sighed. “You wouldn’t understand, not really.”
“Try me. I was raised by a real psychopath so if it's about family, I’ll definitely understand.”
His dark eyes narrowed in on mine.
“Wyatt, we can’t just be her support. If this is gonna work at all, body or not, we have to support each other too.”
He stepped closer, adjusting his glasses.
“What I’m about to tell you next, you cannot tell Sapphyra—no matter what.”
