Sapphyra

Giving Tethys and Oceanus their new class was fun. I wish I could figure out this job system of mine—maybe give everyone a class, but it’s not built that way. Over the next three days, I helped them settle in, showed them where the water needed to be maintained and cared for the most.

At least I helped them when I could get some time to myself.

Guy and Wyatt. They’re scaring me. It almost feels like they’re getting along. Don’t get me wrong, there's still some hostility, but it’s less than before. And they talk to each other, not at each other anymore.

What happened while I was away?

I should just drop it. I’m probably overcomplicating things, but something in my gut is telling me to look a little deeper.

We’re at dinner. Sitting inside Ernie's while Guy cooks behind the bar. Wyatt has a beer in front of him, but of course he’s not drinking it. How long will he keep doing that for my benefit?

Corre and Silla sit at the bar, discussing something that I’m not really paying attention to. Tethys and Oceanus and a few other capps that are trying to get to know them have also filled the bar’s remaining booths. It almost feels like the old days.

A full bar and people trying to kill me? Yeah, definitely like the old days.

“Ask me.” Wyatt says, focusing on my face behind those curious glasses of his. He pushes his beer to the side.

“Why are you acting…nice towards Guy?” Cut straight through the bullshit tonight.

“I thought you wanted us to get along? You know, have your cake and eat it too?” He smirked as I grit my teeth.

“Being civil, yea. What you two have going on now feels beyond being civil though. Almost…brotherly?” That was as close a word as I could describe it.

“I’m sorry for trying to adhere to your wishes darling. I’ll rightfully go back to hating his ass.” The tight line of his mouth made my cheeks warm. I was being ridiculous and he knew it but the whole thing just feels off.

“Fine. Whatever, forget I said anything about it. You two can be assholes or best buddies or somewhere in between, just keep me clear of your bullshit. I have enough on my plate.”

“Did somebody say plate?” Guy slabbed some mouthwatering sizzling meat on my plate. A few vegetables stood next to it but I hardly paid them any mind, devouring the whole plate like an animal—bones and all.

“Damn, Sapph! You should have told me you were starving, mama! I’ll get you a second helping.” Guy shuffled to grab more food but I couldn’t escape Wyatt's narrowed eyes on me.

“What? I eat messy like that all the time.” I answered the silent question.

“I know that.” His jaw clicked but he turned away from me, propping his head up on his chin.

“Say what you’re thinking, Wy.” I hadn’t called him that in years.

“He’s wondering if you’re pregnant dear~” A voice broke us apart, soft, feminine, slightly french. Wyatt and I jumped at the same time, scanning the bar for the source. Yet when nothing came, it didn’t make the night any better.

“We used to be good at this.” I mumbled, eyes peeled on the door.

“What, surveillance or managing our relationship?” He offered, adjusting his glasses.

“Both.” I wish I still had that razors edge from when I was a teen, that sixth sense that refused to leave me whenever I went out. You’d think it would come back in spades considering someone’s out to kill me. Again.

“Looking for me, dearie?” My fist flew to my right, hitting an empty space. She was right there. How the fuck had I let her get that close?

“Did you see–?”

“Blood red hair in a french braid, black eyes, orange flared shirt and black pants. She’s teleporting around the room but it seems like you and I are the only ones bothered by it.” He was analyzing. Good. I need his mind like I need air.

“Teleporting? Like you do?”

“Used to.” He corrected me. “And no. No voice command, no external control that I can see. Must be mental.”

Great. A teleporter with its own set of rules.

“Which titan are you? Figure you guys must be following a theme.” I placed my palms flat against the table and waited with bated breath. I always hated it when bad guys had the upper hand. Then again, they wouldn’t be half as interesting if they weren’t professional.

“It’s about time you asked. Sometimes the best approach is the simplest one, my dear dragon goddess.” I resisted the urge to throw up when I felt a slender and soft arm reach around my shoulders.

Wyatt’s body tensed like a cat ready to spring into action. Guy finally noticed something was off and made his way over, motioning for Corre to step up and take his place.

“Is there something I can help you with…Rhea?” Guy asked through a forced smile. Of course he probably knew about her, another council member. I should really sit down and ask him about all of them.

If we lived that long.

Her dark eyes hid behind a pair of fast forming dark sunglasses. Rhea’s smile met her eyes but it was still creepy as fuck.

“Guy! Look at how healthy you’ve gotten since exile! I thought I’d never see you again.”

“Bullshit. You knew the moment I left with Sapphyra my rebellion was finalized. You also knew that he’d send you here, eventually. The only problem is, I can’t wager why.”

“Someone wanna clue me in on what’s happening here?” I smacked my chest, making sure they hadn’t forgotten me. Because how do you open up a conversation about me being pregnant?

Also why the hell is her arm still around me?

“Oh dear. Forgive me.” Rhea drops her arm, a frown following it that much more closely matches her. “Sapphyra, you’ve been through so much, haven’t you? I don’t mean all this nasty business with Rupert. No, it goes back farther than that doesn’t it?”

A creeping sense of dread started bubbling in my throat.

“No idea what you’re talking about, lady. If you’re here to fight, lets fucking fight and get it over with.”

Please. Let it be just another fight.

She shook her head. “I wish it was that easy. For my trial, you’ll have to come face to face with someone that never got to say goodbye to you. Harsh truths will be revealed. In the end, if you can withstand it, you’ll gain something most people never get: closure.”

My eyes widened, mind going down a list of possibilities. I almost missed a shared worried glance between Wyatt and Guy.

The front entrance bell rang and the door opened softly. I couldn’t see who it was from where I was sitting. So what do I do? I stood up.

“Sapph, wait—” Wyatt and Guy try to hold me back, with words and touches. But something is pulling me. Something they can’t fight anymore than I can.

My hand grips the booth’s corner edge as I lose my battle with gravity upon eye contact with the most beautiful boy I’ve ever seen. His hair is a darker shade of pink—a rose gold, I think, but his eyes…

His eyes are—

“Your eyes are just like your fathers.” I whispered as the tears fell and my voice gave out. I pulled his little body into my arms.
