“How is this possible?”I slightly pull back, brushing the hair from his face. His smile, he’s got my smile. I wanted to hold on to him as long as possible, hold on to this feeling but it's never that easy. The tiny voice in the back of my head was nagging at me.
He couldn’t be more than 4 or 5. Why that age?
Not to mention my tail. It was gently pulling away at my arms and I hissed at it. It snapped at me twice, eventually relenting back behind me.
“Momma? Are you okay?” his voice was just like I’d dreamed.
“Barnaby…mommy’s alright. I’m just so happy to see you, is all. Where have you been all this time?” I knew whatever he’d tell me was a lie but I didn’t care. I’m fighting through my tears, through my instincts, because I need this.
His brow furrowed and he licked his lips in thought, just like his father. “I don’t know. I just woke up when Ms.Rhea said so.”
Wyatt. He hadn’t moved since I hugged our son. I turned back to him, giving him a ‘what the fuck?’ expression. He gulped and eventually made his way over, crouching low to see his son.
Barnaby grinned, far more excited to see Wyatt than I. I wasn’t mad, how could I be? He wrapped his little arms around Wyatt's neck and held him closely.
“Papa! You’re here too! I’m so happy.”
Wyatt swallowed, an awkward smile gracing his lips. “Heh. Yeah, me too.”
“Look. Papa, I got my fangs—” Wyatt's eyes widened as Barnaby pulled back and stretched his lips back, revealing elongated canines, “just like you!”
My tail hit me on the back of my head aggressively. I reached up and grabbed that bastard, strangling it at the tip. Yes, I know something is very fucking wrong here but I just want to enjoy the moment. Is that such a big thing to ask?
Barnaby must be confused though.
“Fangs? Oh, honey, the fangs you’re growing are coming from my dragon side. Your daddy’s teeth are about as dull as they come…no offense honey.” I sheepishly smiled at Wyatt but his awkward smile never left.
“N-none taken, princess.”
Guy leaned over the seat, I can’t help but wonder why the fuck he’d broken out in a cold sweat.
“You alright, Guy?”
“Me? Oh, yeah, I mean why wouldn’t I be? Hehe. I’ll just go back to the grill…” he shuffled off like his pants were on fire. Mouth set in a line, my gaze narrowed and bounced between Guy and Wyatt.
“Oh this is interesting.” Rhea softly said in my ear, teleporting yet again. I jumped so high I nearly hit the ceiling. Barnaby giggled at me but kissed my forehead, pausing my rage a bit.
But only a bit.
“Rhea, I swear to all that is good in the universe if you sneak up on me like that again…” I didn’t need to finish the threat, she’d already backed up behind Barnaby and raised her arms—palms spread, the universal sign for nonaggression. She might be nonaggressive but I’m not.
“Easy, dragoness. I simply wanted to give you what you’ve been needing.”
I wheeled around on her, pointing a finger at her. “And who the hell are you to tell me what I need? Huh?”
I felt a tug on my pants. “Momma, you’re scaring me.”
Shit. Rhea just smiled, not creepy like Rupert but knowingly. I think I hated that version more.
Squatting down, I pull Barnaby into a hug. “I’m sorry baby. Momma’s just tired and confused right now. Hey! Are you hungry? Uncle Guy made you some really yummy food.”
Guy mumbled something I couldn’t make out but he made a small plate of meat and veggies for Barnaby, setting it on the table. Barnaby looked to me, then Wyatt as if asking for permission. I nodded and set a fork in front of him but he ignored it, tearing into the hot slab of meat with his bare hands.
“Bet you’re proud he took after you.” Wyatt mumbled ruefully though he smiled anyway.
“He’s smart like you, I can tell. That’s what I’m really proud of.” My tail wrapped around my wrist and squeezed it twice. Untangling itself, it then pointed towards the door then at Wyatt and Guy. I groaned, knowing what it wanted.
“Corre, Silla. Do you mind watching my son, Barnaby? I need to talk to my partners…alone.”
Corre and Silla had to get over the initial shock of meeting my boy, but the moment was short-lived. They peppered him with kisses and attention, offering more food and mushrooms—to which my son wrinkled his nose and shrunk in his seat. Hehe. He hates mushrooms, just like my mom did.
I dragged Guy and Wyatt out by the hand.
“Whoa—easy, what did I do?” Guy asked, eyes darting back to the bar. I didn’t let him go. Unlike Guy, Wyatt took his punishment with grace and stood tall.
“I don’t know. You two need to tell me what the hell is going on here.”
“I’m just as clueless as you are! One minute we’re talking—”
“And on the verge of arguing.” I interrupt Wyatt.
He steps back, frowning. “I didn’t think we were arguing.”
“You could have fooled me. It’s like something changed between us but it stopped between you and him. So, whatever it is, you’ve gotta let me in.”
They paused, turning to each other then quickly averting their eyes. The veins in my forehead were popping.
“Are you two in a secret relationship or something?!” A nuclear question but its definitely needed for this fuckery.
They jumped like they’d been burned…although Guy was a little less excited in his explanation.
“It’s not that–” Guy started, running his fingers through his hair.
“How could you even think that?” Wyatt spread his hands and walked towards me but I flinched at his touch, pulling away.
“I don’t know. I left you two alone for a couple hours the other day and ever since then it's like there's a secret club going on. If it's just you two bonding, why do I feel so off about it?” My shoulders were shaking, fists clenching. I had to get myself together.
“Shouldn’t you be more upset with the woman who’s playing tug of war with your heart? She’s using our son for god sake, Sapph!” Wyatt. He always finds a way to bounce the subject in his favor. But we’re not playing some dumb sport and I’m only playing one megalomaniacs game today.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. I had to steel my heart for the words I uttered next because they would change everything.
Opening my eyes, I turned to them, voice as calm as possible.
“If you two don’t tell me what you’re hiding, consider this our divorce for what was—” I turned to Wyatt, “ and what could have been” Guys face fell as I walked away.
