Guy
I panicked.
I watched her beautiful ass walk back towards the bar.
She looked like she fucking meant every word. Glancing at Wyatt, he’d paled but he wasn’t fucking budging. I grabbed him by the shoulders and shook him like his life depended on it.
“Moron! Fucking tell her!” I hissed low. I know I should hold to my word but I care more about losing the woman I love than holding on to his bullshit secret.
“I can’t! You think I don’t want to? That every fiber of my being isn’t screaming at me to stop being a fucking coward?” Of course it is but I need you to tell her that, dummy. I need you to fucking man up or we’re losing her.
“She’s the mother of your child. She loves you more than fucking air, Wyatt. You killed 2 million people and she still clings to you like you’re her god.” He glared at me for bringing in such a low blow but it was necessary.
“If anyone is going to forgive you for something out of your goddamn control, it will be her. The longer you wait to tell her the more damage you do to your relationship—and by proximity—mine.” I was close enough that my spit was definitely hitting him in the face but I couldn’t care less.
He squatted low, like he was about to throw up.
“Wyatt—”
“Fine—fuck! Okay…okay I’ll tell her.”
“Well it's about time you two decided to share with the teacher.” I nearly jumped out of my skin as Sapph rounded a corner.
“What? Wait, didn't you go inside—”
She shook her head, smirking. “Nope. Didn’t hear the door bell did you? You two got distracted enough that I just turned back around and moved in the shadows.”
I sighed, running my hand down my face. This woman would be the death of me…but what a way to go.
“Sapph.” Wyatt started. He couldn’t quite bring the words out, if his floundering lips were anything to go by.
“Do I need to tell her?”
“No…just give me a minute, okay.” He blew out a shaky breath, fighting back tears. The second time I’d ever seen him so vulnerable but in front of her, it felt like he couldn’t let go—not fully.
I nudged him with my elbow.
“Open up or I’ll do it.”
He sighed and turned to her, taking off his glasses. Gaze trained on her, lips trembling, he finally got the truth out.
“Sapph, I come from a family of werewolves.” He gulped. She crossed her arms, raising a brow.
“Is that why Barnaby brought up fangs? Are you a werewolf, Wyatt?”
He fervently shook his head no. “No. No, I’m human. The gene didn’t pass down to me but my brother, you met Dire Wolf—he was a werewolf.” He let that linger in the air for a second. I could feel Sapph's mind working overtime as she furrowed her brow and started pacing.
“You could have told me. That can’t be it, I mean I’m a friggin’ dragon. Interspecies love isn’t exactly taboo, Wyatt.”
“It is if they’re not biologically compatible.” She stopped, raising a brow.
“What the hell are you talking about? Of course we’re biologically compatible.”
He bit back a sob. “Maybe. But I tested Barnaby after…”
“After his stillbirth, you can say it. I’m not that fragile flower anymore, Wyatt.” She spoke softly and took his hands, rubbing her thumbs across his palms.
“I didn’t…I tried to put two and two together but…” I should have kept my mouth shut. This was such a delicate moment for them but I ached to help them.
Sniffling, he continued on. “I tested him. He picked up the werewolf gene and the dragon gene. Those two are dominant, they’re not meant to play nice. What if his body…what if he didn’t make it because of me.”
Silently sobbing, Sapphyra took her husband into her bosom, gently rubbing his back.
“Wyatt, I was sick for weeks.” He looked up at her, nodding.
“I remember.”
“No. Wyatt. Confession time. I was sick because I was holding back my body from transforming. It was like an autoimmune response, like an allergy.” It was her turn to cry. I rubbed my chin in thought as something from the dragon archives came back to memory.
“Our dragon form can protect us from foreign bodies.” My heart stopped as the wheels began to click into place for me.
“The baby. It thought the baby was trying to hurt you?!” I squeaked out. Me. A grown man squeaking, how embarrassing.
She nodded. “My body was fighting the transformation so hard, I probably stole all of Barnaby’s nutrients. I just wanted to keep him safe and look how well that turned out.”
“Sapph…” Wyatt whispered, voice hoarse and much older than he really was. “None of that matters now. Your dragon form, my wolf dna…we lost our boy. But Rhea, for some reason, decided to give him back to us.”
“I trust her about as far as I can throw her.” Same here, Sapph, same. “Whatever she says, she wants to break me. Nobody comes up here and gives grieving parents their dead child back to be kind.”
We all glanced at each other, a knowing look passed between us that said one thing: do not trust her.
“How do we break it to Barnaby then?” I asked. He’s not my child but I want to take care of him, simply for being the child of the two people I love the most.
“I don’t know…but we can’t stay out here and pretend everything’s fine.” She took Wyatt's hand and mine. Together, strength to carry forward looped between us and we walked back into Ernies.
“Momma! Papa! Uncle Guy! Can I have seconds?” Okay, I officially loved this kid even if he is fake. His grinning greasy little face was all it took. He handed me his plate and I headed back to the kitchen.
“Did you figure out the truth outside?” Rhea asked, sitting atop my counter top with her legs crossed. I grit my teeth and nodded towards the happy parents.
“Yep and it didn’t break them. His dna, hers, all that matters is that they love each other. You can't break that with your mind games, Aunt Rhea.”
She raised a brow, lips pursed as she moved towards Sapph and Wyatt’s table.
Rhea called out just loud enough for the bar to hear.
“Sapphyra…I’m surprised you found peace. Knowing that transforming into your dragon form would have saved your baby—”
I dropped Barnaby’s plate. Sapphyra…Sapphyra shut down, right in front of me.
