Guy

“She’s not moving.” I sit in the grass of our…what was the word Wyatt used, mind-scape? Whatever. We finally managed to get a view of the outside world, to get a view of Sapph—just in time to see her collapse.

I was there. Standing right by Wyatt's side as he backed away towards the fog, wiping the tears from his eyes.

“What did you just say?” I asked him, nerves on fire. My feet carried me to Wyatt but I don’t remember the journey.

The sting of my hand across his face though? I remember that well enough. His glasses fell, lenses cracking against the dirt. He was bent over, holding his face.

“Guy–”

“You didn’t think I’d let that kick slide forever did you? Now then.” I grabbed him by his expensive-ass looking coat and picked him up off the ground, staring him dead in the face.

“Tell me why the hell you just said that to her and I swear to the goddess it better be a good reason.” I felt a presence behind me. My skin tingled when an unknown hand touched my shoulder blade.

“Because he wanted to draw me out.” Noa. Somehow I know that name but I don’t know him, not really.

I dropped Wyatt—the coward hadn’t given me the time of day anyway.

“Who the hell are you?”

“I’m what happens when you put a sociopathic genius with a hotheaded golden retriever.” He bows, smiling softly. Why did I want to kiss him and then punch him in his perfect face?

“Now that I get a good look at you, you’ve got features from both of us.” Oh, now Wyatt decides to speak up. Typical.

“What the hell does that have to do with how you’re treating your wife right now, huh?!” Am I the only one that isn’t crazy?

“Guy. Wyatt fought my control enough to hurt her. He knew it would weaken my control so you two could swap out if wanted.” His brows furrowed and he grasped the side of face, digging his nails in. “Although, all he had to do was ask! This was wholly unnecessary.”

“Says the one who couldn’t leave well enough alone.” Wyatt adjusts his cracked glasses then frowns and takes them off, squinting.

“Will one of you two start making sense?”

“We are.”

“We are. You’re just not listening.”

I scratched the top of my head and sighed. Sometimes I hated this man and now it felt like there were two of him. Phereda, help me.

“Wyatt. You’re a colossal fool if you think this will go as planned.” Noa’s mouth formed an upward slanted line of disgust as he glared at Wyatt.

“Trust the process.” Was all that idiot said, still holding his cheek.

“I won’t.” Noa shook his head, sitting down on a nearby stump. “I was trying to be delicate but firm, coax her into making her own decisions. But you, as per the norm, do what you think is best. Damn anyone else.”

“I did what was necessary! I always do what is necessary. My love for Sapphyra and her love for me will only hold her back. Look at how hard she’s pushing herself for my sake! She will die if she doesn’t move on from me.”

Noa sighs heavily, slamming his hands against the stump hard enough to shake the earth.

“Not like that.” He spoke softly, full of regret for something he didn’t even do.

Part of me wonders if I shouldn’t have just let Wyatt die…but looking at her now—hearing how she’s breaking down without him? It would have been crueler to leave her all alone like that.

I turned to the two of them. I wasn’t sure whether to curse them, beat 'em up or both but it’s clear I was the only one thinking about our partner.

“I’m going to talk to her.” I say to Noa. He rubs his chin. For a moment I think I’ll have to fight him for it but then he just nods.

She’s mumbling.

When I open my eyes again, I’m looking down at Sapphyra. She’s curled up in a ball, tail wrapped around her body like a snake security blanket. If this wasn’t so sad, it would be kind of cute.

“Sapph?” I reach out a hand to touch her. This isn’t my hand though. My arms are too long, and when did she get shorter?

Oh. I’m not in my body…I’m in his. Noa’s. This is gonna take some getting used to.

Sapph doesn’t move. She might have been mumbling before but now she’s silent. I think the silence scares me more than anything else.

Fuck this. I can’t take it, seeing her like this. If those two are content to break her, then they never deserved her in the first place.

“Sapphyra…I got you. Hold on, Clean-up girl.” I gently scooped her up in my arms, holding her close to my chest. Her eyes were wide, frozen on the trauma she must be replaying in her head. It made my heart ache. Made my fists wanna break something.

“Guy?” She finally whispered.

“Yeah, it’s me.” I snort, and give her a small grin. She flinches. Damn, that's right, not my body. Noa doesn’t seem like the kind of guy to grin and mean it anyway.

“So it’s true? He’s really leaving me?” Her bottom lip trembled. I couldn’t answer her right away—for once, I didn’t want to fumble.

“He…” I pause, forming the right words on my tongue because it’s not just about telling the truth, “he’s doing what he always does: what he thinks is best for you. Wyatt thinks he’s holding you back so he’s taking a step back…for now.”

“Who told him that?” She finally blinked. I had to set her down. Heat started pouring out of her, like the girl was a mini-volcano. I didn’t know where it was coming from but I nearly burned my—Noa’s hands.

Wait, why does this feel familiar? I’ve seen this somewhere before…in our dreams maybe?

“Ouch! Sapph, you’re on fire!” I tried pointing to her hair that was catching flames. She ignored it, tilting her head to look at me with a blank stare and an unholy aura.

“Who told him that?” She repeated. Her hair was no longer on fire. Instead her whole body lit up with pink and black flames. The building she’d just refurbished was dripping in sweat, it would melt before long.

“Sapphyra,” I spoke low and measured, I prayed she could even hear me, “you’re chasing down his body. That’s why he—”

“No!” Her jaw opened and closed. The blank stare was gone, all that was left was fiery determination and something more. Something sinister.

Oh boy. I’m in danger, aren’t I…

“Who told my husband he could leave me at all?”
