Sapphyra

“Hey Wyatt?”

“Hm?” He looks up from his book, catching me staring at him like a dope. He smiles and closes the musty old tome.

“I love you.” I’m sitting up on our bed, a hand pressed to my swollen belly. Walking over with practiced grace, Wyatt slides into bed and gets eye level with the baby.

“A surge of hormones again? Or do you need me to speak to Barnaby? He must know his fathers voice by now.” I rolled my eyes, watching him marvel at the tiny hand stretching my taut belly skin.

“Seems like he loves the sound of your voice just as much as you do.” I smiled, wiping a tear away. This was my family, my home. I’d never felt more safe and loved in my life than I did back then.

“Hmph.” He smiled wider than I’ve seen before, even wider than on our honeymoon. His hand gently covered Barnaby’s and a soft tear escaped his normal stony visage.

“Is that a tear of joy I see? Now who’s got the hormonal changes?” He did not like my raised brow and smirk one bit. Pulling back, he adjusted his glasses and took my hand in his, gently rubbing his thumb over my gold wedding band.

“I still don’t see why you insist on wearing such a simple thing. You picked out a diamond ring, but you refuse to wear it?”

“I don’t need all that. Never have. All I need…” I leaned in, kissing him deeply, “is you. Well, you and your promise to never leave me.”

He frowned, “that’s…different. Where's that coming from?”

I glanced at the calendar clock system above our bed. Today was that day. The day my father abandoned me in Hawaii.

“Sapph…come here, princess.” I sniffled and threw myself into Wyatt’s arms.

“I can’t be alone again, Wyatt.” The baby kicked my ribs, making me cough. My heart rate increased—breathing quickened.

“Hey, hey calm down. Easy now. Sapphyra, look at me.” He grasped my chin, guiding my eyes to him.

“You have my word. I swear as long as I’m alive, you will never be alone again.”

How dumb was I to believe this bastard?

I shouldn’t be fighting for him. I should just be fighting him, smashing his stupid face into the pavement. But he doesn’t even have a stupid face to punch…or kiss…or slap.

“Sapphyra, the fire—”

I looked down at my hands, watching the pink and black flames dance across my skin. In Sanctuary, I’d done something like this without paying it much mind. A flex of the power I used to have. Yet, as soon as Guy pointed it out, the flames died down and retreated into me.

Teeth grit, I ran up to Guy or Noa or who-the-fuck-ever and started beating his chest. He didn’t stop me, I doubt I was really hurting him, anyway.

“You.can’t.leave.me!” Those were the only words I knew. Each one emphasized by a pounding fist. I was beyond angry, beyond sad. I was exhausted, and he knew it; everyone knew it.

“Sapphyra.” Guy's eyes widened, and he pulled me into a hug. I bit into his shoulder; he didn’t even flinch, even when I broke the skin. “I’m here.”

“No. I don’t believe you!” I sobbed out, punching and kicking like a child throwing a tantrum. “All of you are fucking liars who only care about yourselves!”

“Sapphyra! I’m here. And I’m not going anywhere,” Guy insisted.

I screamed into his shoulder, biting him again and again. I’ll bite and cut and claw him up. He’ll have to stay, because my marks will be on him forever.

Oh god, I sound so fucked up. But what else am I supposed to do? I’m losing the last bit of my past, my home!

I think I’m losing my mind.

“Listen, Sapphyra! I know it’s not me you want to hit. Wyatt’s your everything,” Guy started. I stopped raining blows down on him, glancing up at him. He was shaking just as much as I was.

“I am here. You’re stuck with me. And you may not believe me, but that's fucking fine. It’s fantastic, and you wanna know why?”

A sob caught in my throat as he cupped the side of my cheek, gently brushing my hair out of my face.

“Why?” I asked, throat raw with pain. “I’m just a fuckup. Noa is right about me.”

“Fuck all that, Sapph. You’re the strongest woman I know—hell, the strongest person I know! If anyone can heal from all the bullshit that is Wyatt, it’s you.”

Deep down I had to ask myself if I really wanted to heal…and I'm so ashamed of the answer.

“Guy. You deserve so much better than me…than this situation.” I pressed my forehead to his chest.

“You ain’t gotta tell me. I know what I signed up for…what I’m still signing up for.” Melting into him felt natural and weird all at once. His love was kind and whole, and my mind knew it was right, but my body? It still screamed for Wyatt, for his toxic lies and manipulation.

I hate myself.

“It’ll take time, but time’s all I have to give you, Guy.” I could promise him that much at least.

He nodded, though I could see the pain in his eyes. One day I’ll be a better person, I swear. I might even become someone worthy of his love.

“That’s more than enough for me, angel.”

“Angel?” I squeaked out, shocked he hadn’t called me Clean-up girl or cotton candy dipshit—his go-to favorites.

He winked at me, a grin popping up. “Consider it motivation to get your wings sooner. I’ll be calling you angel so much that you’ll probably knock me into heaven.”

I grimaced…and laughed. It was short-lived, but it felt good. A meager 5 seconds of me forgetting my pain. That was Guy in a nutshell, I think.

“Guy, I’m sorry I fought you. It wasn’t your fault what Wyatt did.” My shoulders slumped, the shame rolling in.

“Hey, don’t worry about that. Besides, it had already healed.” As his cheeks darkened, I raised a brow…and then put two and two together. I face-palmed.

“Tell me you didn’t like it…” his silence was enough, “Guy!”

“What?! Don’t judge me for discovering a kink at the worst time. All of my experiences are with you, anyway.” He pouts and refuses to meet my gaze.

That was even more weight for me to carry, but fuck it. I laughed again, softer. Not to kink shame him just because he makes me laugh at the worst times. And it’s real.

“Ahem,” I cleared my throat, getting us back on track. I was nowhere near over Wyatt, but at least with Guy here, I wasn’t alone.

“Right. What’s the next building, angel?” His sheepish grin gave me something Wyatt almost snatched away from me.

Hope.
