Barbie

I forgot how beautiful Sapphyra was. I thought it was a dream at first, having her find me down there after all this time. And I did sleep , expecting death to finally take me. Yet when my eyes opened beneath a starry sky, all I felt was peace and love.

“You’re finally up? You scared the hell out of me.” Sapphyra said, wiping at the dirt from my skin.

She had my torso covered with a blanket but my arms and legs were wiped clean.

I sat up, glancing at her bandaged arm in a sling. My eyebrows stitched together, confusion in my eyes.

When she noticed me staring, she smiled and waved me off.

“Dont worry about that. You just work on getting better. I'll be fine.” She didn't sound fine. In fact she sounded exhausted.

I reached my hand up and gently touched her face. Her blush was cute. In that moment I remembered what made me so upset with Wyatt all those years ago. It wasn't that he left me at the altar. I mean sure, I was embarrassed and angry but I got over it quickly, especially after I learned what they did to her in Drakkir.

No, I knew Wyatt was a cold bastard. But I was jealous.

Jealous that he got to worship you and no one else.

“Okay. I might be a little tired…and starving.”

“You wouldn't be starving if you ate our food!”

I nearly jumped out of the bed as a humanoid mushroom female(?) walked into the room carrying a tray of questionable food.

She made my skin crawl when she gave me the side eye.

“Silla, I love you for taking care of me but if I eat one more mushroom I'm gonna turn into one.” Sapph chuckled and winced when her arm moved.

Shit. I did that to her. Though I’m missing some details, I know one thing for a fact.

That door was never meant to be opened from the other side and it was not Sapphyra that was supposed to find me.

I pointed at Sapphyra’s arm. She again waves me off but I was insistent.

“Okay okay,” she relented, “it’s hurting just a little bit all right. But you need to focus on gaining your strength, not focusing on me.”

Liar. I furrowed my brow at her but sighed and let it go for now. She’s too self-sacrificing.

As she stood up to leave with the mushroom woman, I grabbed onto her other wrist and tried to pull her back in the room.

She turned to me with a smile and gently freed herself from my grasp.

“Don't worry, I'll be back in a few minutes. Besides, Silla and Tethys are both going to take care of you in the meantime, okay?”

No it was not okay but I didn't have my voice so I was stuck in this terrible situation. And there was no need to stress her out either, her body looked like it was under enough stress.

I nodded and laid back down. Although the name she mentioned struck a cord with me.

Tethys.

Where had I heard that name before? I couldn't quite recall so I let it go. I had much more important things to worry about after all.

Like how to kill her husband.

My memories are a little fuzzy from all that time inside my prison but there's one thought that kept me going throughout the years. It was the hope that eventually I would get my hands on Wyatt and I would kill him.

I watched Sapphyra leave the room, closing the door behind her. The mushroom woman, Silla, was her name? She sat in the corner of my room, eyes closed but I could tell she was watching me. I don't know how I knew that, but I knew it.

I tried to listen to what they were saying on the outside of the door, Sapphyra and this Tethys person. It was faint but I could make out a few words.

Trust, lies, Rupert. Rupert?

I have so many questions yet so little answers. But without my voice I couldn't begin to fight for myself properly.

The tray of food that had been brought in for severe set to my left I got up and I started nibbling on it slow bikes. Tiny sips here and there. I didn't want my body to reject the food after so long without it.

But then I threw it all up violently.

I leaned over clutching my stomach expecting there to be pain but there was none.

I looked over at the mushroom woman staring death daggers at her. If looks could kill I would have been a serial killer once upon a time.

“That food was not meant for you," the mushroom woman said.

I tilted my head at her.

“It was meant for Sapphyra. She is a dragon. Dragon bodies can handle our food easily. Unfortunately humans struggle. Although you seem to be a special case.”

Though it was silent I scoffed at her words. Of course I was a curious case. I was stuck inside of a prison for years. Come to think of it…I stopped my thoughts before they carried me further. But it seems that Silla could read my mind, or at least figure out the same thing I had been thinking.

“I have to wonder, what kind of human are you that can survive a hundred years inside of a locked room with no food, no water, no sunlight, no person to talk to? You are not a descendant of dragon kind. I would know, they have a certain smell to them. But you? You smell like,” she squints at me, “nothing. You smell like something that shouldn't be here. Although I guess I shouldn't say that since you are a friend of the Master Custodian.”

She gaged my reaction before continuing on.

“Master Custodian is what we call Sapphyra.”

I shrugged not caring one way or another what nickname she wanted to be called especially because I couldn't speak and call her that myself.

Sapphyra opened the door and glanced at me with a smile, warm and bright as she always is. She nodded at Silla.

Silla stood up with concern in her voice she asked, “what's going on? Are you going somewhere?”

“I am,” Sapphyra answered. “There was an explosion at Beacon earlier. And I haven't seen Wyatt or Guy or Noa since it happened.”

She frowned but with an understanding look she nodded.

“All right I'll stay here and care for your friend until you come back.”

“Thank you,” Sapphyra nodded at her with a smile that didn’t reach her weary eyes, “you are one of the greatest shroomies I have ever met.”

Silla rolled her eyes, “no I am the greatest shroomie you've ever met and don't you forget it.”

The amount of ego stroking in this room made me sick. I crossed my arms, eyeing the throw up on the floor.

What could have made me do that? I chewed slowly and I drank even slower so I didn't understand.

“Barbie” Sapphyra called out to me, “give it some time.”

Did she read my thoughts too? No, I'm just being paranoid, Silla brought in some clean equipment but then this oddly colored Tethys woman came in behind her. Sapphyra left and Tethys eyed me like I wasn't even there.

As if she could see through me into my past into my soul even.

“Silla,” she started, “can you give us the room?” Silla stood immediately. I could just feel the relief in her pale smile as she walked away.

“Gladly,” she answered.

And when Silla closed the door it wasn't a seconds later that Tethy's hand was wrapped around my throat. She pinned me to the bed. Tethys growls like a rabid dog ready to bite down on its prey.

She looked me dead in the eye and I could see it, the killer's intent. She asked me one question.

“You! What the hell are you doing out here so soon?!”
