Sapphyra

I sat underground in the underwater bedroom Wyatt built for us.

But instead of the bed I was on the floor, staring up at the starry night ceiling.

This is pathetic.

I know it was a fake fight but my feelings were really hurt. I should just go above ground and talk to him and smooth things over. But no it's a bad idea, the last thing I want is to draw attention towards Barnaby's grave.

Standing up, I paced around the room wondering what to do with myself. That's when I decided not to sit with these feelings anymore. I had to get out and do something and exploring the underwater home felt like a good idea.

Okay from this point on I'm calling it the ark. Like with Noah but not…anyway I'm rambling in my own head, that's how bored I am right now.

I checked room after room confirming that they were indeed empty but I knew someone was still watching. But I couldn't tell if it was Theia or someone else.

I knew trusting the Titans was going to bite me in the butt eventually. But you can't make lemonade without lemons or so my grandma used to tell me.

The echoing sound of a loud knock on a door down a set of stairs I hadn't explored drew me in. It led to the lowest level of the ark. And for some reason going down there filled me with a sense of dread.

But if I didn't do it well…I mean what else was I going to do with my spare time?

And I wasn't going to rely on Wyatt anymore for answers. I was just going to have to get them myself.

My hands pressed against the wall as I let my instinct guide me down each step, probably three flights of stairs total. I could have flown down but who's to say he didn't booby trap this part of the ark.

What am I doing?

I'm accusing him of booby trapping the thing he said he was going to use to save people. That's how screwed up he has me right now.

A door large enough to let an elephant in, made of some weird metal that I'd never seen before stood in front of me. On the other side of that door there was a series of bangings.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

“Is this the part where I say who's there?”

The banging stopped.

Oh great now I'm in a scary movie. Well maybe it's a B movie and not a major movie franchise.

There were no handles on the door and there were no sensors on the walls either. How the hell is anybody supposed to get in here?

But then something occurred to me.

What if it was not for anyone to enter, at least not from this side? What if it was only to keep something in? Which begs the question: what the hell would he want to keep down here so locked up that it can only be opened from the other side?

“Hello? Can you hear me?”

I asked, pressing my ear to the door. I got no response for at least 30 seconds then the banging started again, faster this time. It got to a point where the knocking was giving me a headache—my second one in weeks.

Maybe it was a stress headache, I don't know.

“Hang on, I'll get you out! Just uh, knock if you're not going to hurt me and I’ll let you out.”

Now why the hell did the knocking stop?!

I gulped, suddenly regretting coming down here to begin with.

And then one single knock.

That gave me pause, “so you can hear me and understand me?” I asked, placing my ear on the door “knock once for yes two for no I guess? This is confusing.”

After a few seconds one single knock. Okay, now I'm really scared but I don't say the words out loud. I don't know why I'm suddenly scared more of a door and what's on the other side of it versus the monsters that I fought in the past.

Krakens, dragons, trolls all were a breeze but this door? One single metal door is holding me up.

No, I know what this is. It's Wyatt.

Everything that he's done to me has broken me down. I don't even know who I am anymore. I guess that's one thing I have in common with whoever is on the other side of this door.

“Listen,” I started, “I don't know if Wyatt put you in here—” one knock interrupted me.

“Okay I guess that means yes. But he caged me too. I'm going to get you out of here and I'm going to make sure he doesn't cage anyone else ever again. Do you believe me?”

One single knock followed by a second.

“I know you don’t know me but you’ll learn real quick; I stand by what I promise.”

There was a better way to take this door…but I’m not known for better. I’m a fucking hammer, not a scalpel. It’s time I start acting like it again.

“To hell with it.” I declared, letting all the anger festering inside me, all the hurt and the bitterness combine into the strength of this next punch.

It hurt. No, hurt wasn't the right word.

It shattered me. It shattered the bones in my wrists and my hand but the door went down in one punch. I dropped to my knees in tears, unable to let out a single scream because the pain was so excruciating. I've never felt pain like this before, not even when I gave birth.

I wiped the stinging tears from my eyes with the back of my wrist and looked up to see someone never thought I would see again.

Her skin was caked in mud and filth. She wore tattered rags that hung loosely on her body. And she glared at me like I was an alien with three heads. I had to blink a few times, and rub my eyes a few more just to make sure I wasn't the crazy one.

Because it was Barbie that was staring at me.

She had just enough reach from the chains that held her to the wall to hit the door.

“Oh my God! Barbie, who did this to you?”

She opened her mouth but all that came out was a cough. Her voice was gone no doubt from not being in use for a while. With all eyes on her, slowly I stood up holding my limp arm carefully to the side.

I asked again, because I needed to be absolutely sure about this.

“Was it Wyatt?”

She nodded and then her eyes rolled back. She hit the floor hard.
