Sapphyra
The first thing I noticed was that my eyes no longer worked, and that I was definitely not on the ground anymore. I was floating; that can’t be right. I was just talking to Wyatt and System and…
Barnaby’s tomb. It must have triggered me into this state.
“Hello?” I called out and immediately felt like a dumbass. I’m probably inside my head right now, so if anyone’s gonna be answering me back, it'll be me.
“Damn. At least let me see what my body is doing…” Yeah, let me see all the chaos I cause in the name of my son. What a disappointment I must be to my mother and stepfather, the ones who trained me to use my powers for good. To have mercy for the weak and give justice to those the system failed. Some superhero I turned out to be.
Wait.
“System?” Maybe she was still around.
No.
It was System's voice, but it wasn’t hers. This was a warm and quiet voice, unlike her normal sassy one.
Well, shit.
“Okay, if you’re not System, then who are you?”
You.
“I mean, obviously, but what are we talking about here? Is it an inner demon kind of deal or a repressed voice, perhaps?” I could work with either.
No.
I sighed. “You’ve certainly got a smooth way with words there, disembodied voice.”
Remember.
“Remember what? You've got to be more specific than that.” A rush of hot air hit my face, blowing me back far enough that I hit a wall. It didn’t feel like a normal wall; it was soft and warm like a big hug. My fingers reached out and ran over the surface of my new plushy. Scales tickled my fingertips, and I smiled.
Right before the panic set in.
I pushed myself off of it and turned around, using my tail as a steering wheel. My vision came back, and though the room was still pitch black, I knew who I was looking at before they adjusted.
My dragon. Me. Bigger than life—almost as big as a monolith, covered from head to toe in silky pink scales. Giant claws steadied me as I moved on two legs. My wings and tail had both elongated, longer than three football fields each. I couldn’t make out the face, but I just knew that my dragon was staring down at me.
“It’s you.” My heart leapt into my throat as I recognized what that meant.
“Oh goddess. I’ve given up control to my dragon…” I whispered, fingers trembling as they covered the scream that ripped from my mouth. I’d lost control before and Wyatt brought me back that time, but this time? Fuck me, I must have handed over the reins completely.
The boys. They’re in danger.
“You have to give me back control.” I cleared my throat, trying to summon my backbone beneath this behemoth.
No.
“Don’t you fucking tell me no! This is my body! Give it back!” I screeched, kicking her in the pinky claw. It’s like an ant kicking an elephant.
No. No more cages.
She finally says a complete sentence and it completely sucks the wind out of my sails. Of course. Wyatt. She’s mad about what he did and I mean, she absolutely should be livid. I would be too if I spent 100 years locked away—I mean I am livid.
Right?
“Listen.” I started, speaking firmly but soft. Arguing with myself never did me any good. “I know you’re pissed off about Wyatt but you have to give me back control. We’ll end up hurting innocent people otherwise.”
The room shook with her roar. I had to cover my ears or else my head would have popped.
“Yeah, you probably don’t care about people. I get it.” Just like Wyatt, she…I’ve got tunnel vision.
Barnaby…my little…wyrmling.
I started crying like a faucet, falling to my knees as I listened to my mighty form’s heart break all over again. My heart hurt…would it ever stop hurting?
No more cage. Protect new wyrmling.
Well that confirmed my worst fears. I placed a hand over my clenching belly, feeling phantom kicks of my little one already.Leave it to me to get pregnant by an illusion of all things. I’m sure the baby will be a topic of debate for later
“I didn’t think I’d be a mother again so soon.” Soon. More like ever. Stupid heat threw everything out of whack for me. My self control went out the window like a side piece trying not to get caught. Still, at least it was with one of my mates.
Not mate.
“I beg your finest pardon?” Squinting in the dark, I tried to guess what she would look like. “Wyatt is absolutely our mate, for better or worse.”
Not mate. Not Goddess pick.
Phereda said she gave me two mates…then again, she never said who they were.
My cheeks darkened as heat rose up my neck. “We’re getting off topic. I need control of my body back. I won’t say it again.”
Funny.
Right because what the hell could I do with her in control now?
“You could assure her you won’t let her be caged again…least of all by your human.”
I knew that voice. I groaned and closed my eyes as she appeared next to me.
“Why are you here, Phereda?”
“I came to help you, you little twat. Maybe be a bit appreciative.” I smirked. There was something soothing about making her angry.
“Well,” I heard her rustle next to me, no doubt crossing her arms, “you are in quite the predicament. You should have taken my offer before.”
“Did you come here to gloat or to help me?” I was beyond tired of everyone’s bullshit.
“A good goddess can do both. Now then.” She paused, leaning in close to me. My skin tingled wherever her hair touched me. “You must make a vow to your dragon—which is really a vow to yourself. I mean, really, this entire environment is a figment of your—”
“Okay! I get it, damn!”
Phereda chuckled.
“You need rest.” That’s a fucking given, but I don’t have time. “No excuses, Sapphyra. You must rest and you must grieve. Grieve not just for your lost child but also your lost trust in your…lover.” The disdain on her tongue gave me pause.
“You really didn’t give me Wyatt?”
“No. I would never gift you with that kind of megalomaniacal energy. I can be a little rude, yes, but I am not cruel—least of all to you.” There was a smile in there somewhere.
“I will never understand your fascination with me…but alright. Fine, I promise—cross my fucking heart and hope to die—that I, Sapphyra, will sit my ass down and rest. I will heal and learn to move forward with my life.”
Moving forward…the idea of moving on from Wyatt has bounced around in my head but lately.
“Sapphyra, you’re backpedaling.”
“He’s my husband.”
“A husband that caged a side of you.”
“I know what he did…and I heard him try to do it again. Wyatt—” I’m still defending him but this time it feels different, “he’s afraid. He lost our Barnaby, same as I did but he’s had to carry us both emotionally and mentally for so long. Wyatt makes terrible decisions out of fear, and I’m no better. Look at me, I gave in to hatred and rage at Rupert and let my control fly free.”
Phereda pouts. “Rage at him is understandable but it is Wyatt who started your stress, he manipulated you—”
“And he kidnapped me to stop me from throwing my life away in a last ditch effort. And again when he saw me spiraling into this, he tried to help me the only way he knew how.”
Her eyes widened. “Tell me you don’t forgive him,”
Do I? The answer came faster than I thought it would.
“I do.” It was like a wave of relief washed over me with those words.
Phereda groaned, clearly disappointed.
“I do forgive him because I understand him. But I can never trust him again. I’m no fool. And I don’t condone his actions because I forgive him. I’m forgiving him for my peace of mind because carrying that anger and hurt has poisoned me.”
“Well that’s fine for what he’s done to you. What about others? What about Barbie?”
My nose twitched.
“Wyatt Hart doesn’t do things for no reason. If he says that she is connected to Barnaby’s body being taken, then I believe him.” Granted , I’ll be keeping an eye on him at all times but Wyatt has already tried to show me he can change. As long as he keeps his word and lets Noa lead when we finally find his body, then maybe there’s hope that he can change.
Until then.
“I will always love my husband, even when I can’t trust him.” I placed a hand on my stomach, feeling phantom kicks again. The baby hadn’t grown that big yet.
“You’d be surprised how fast hybrid babies grow. Dragons hatch slow but grow rather fast when in their element. Wolves just grow fast in general.”
“Thanks for the biology lesson I guess. So then, I made my vows.” Phereda had vanished, leaving me all alone. I waited for something magical to happen. “And I meant them. How do I—”
My surroundings changed. No more darkness, no more dragon in front of me. Phereda was gone. All had changed to Cyran City hall which is good because that’s where I wanted to go.
But my hand was around Valeria’s throat and not Rupert’s.
Not good, not fucking good at all.
