Rupert
(Minutes before Sapphyra wakes up)
I never expected to fall in love at first sight. Not in a romantic way, no. What we shared was something deeper than fleeting hearts and stolen kisses. The love I felt for her, for Sapphyra could only be described in one word: spiritual.
As I watched her massive form reach up to the heavens and turn towards my side of the dividing wall, I knew she was coming for me. That roar, those scales, the immense pressure of her power buckled every knee around me. I did not buckle because I knew she had finally ascended to godhood.
“Husband, are you not worried?” Valeria asked me as I trained my gaze on Sapphyra. She trembled next to me, seeking comfort. I was never truly fond of her but I needed her for the plan that was set in motion years ago.
“Worried?” I laughed. “Why would I be worried? For what?”
I could sense her gaze raking over me, searching for someone who was never there. It landed on the jewel on my neck but like always, she held her tongue. I am so tired of meek women.
“Speak your mind, Valeria.”
“You do not fear her coming this way and destroying all you have built and you refuse to take off that thing.” There it is. I knew she hated it.
“Call it by its proper name.” I murmured, lifting it up and caressing the stone.
Valeria wrinkled her nose. “Scentblocker. A barbaric tool that hides your scent from others. It makes it hard for me to find you—”
I sighed and held up a hand, quieting her.
“If I wanted you to find me, then you would have no trouble doing so.” My eyes scanned the ground as I stood atop city hall. My people were forming a small mob in front of the building, no doubt looking to me for leadership.
But why would I continue to lead sheep instead of joining the divine one in front of me?
“She’ll be here in a few more minutes.” Valeria whispers, panicked. “We have to evacuate.”
“You can evacuate them. I’m staying right here where I belong.” Valeria squints and pauses. Her eyes widen like she finally sees me for the first time.
“Is this what you’ve been hoping for, all this time? Sending all of our friends to test her, push her…this is the result you’ve been desiring?” Her voice was rising with each word. Fine time for her to find a backbone I suppose.
The answer should have been apparent but I forget how dense she tends to be.
“Duh.” I said unceremoniously as I watched her topple building and giant mushroom alike, leaving a trail of destruction in her wake. I bet she could tear this entire city down in her sleep, especially in this form.
Valeria's hands hit my chest, pushing me back a step. Normally I would backhand her or reprimand her and send her to the dungeons below. But I’m so happy that I am willing to let it slide.
“Rupert! Don’t you care about anything?! Anything at all other than her?! The people you’ve helped, the experiments you’re conducting for the harmony of Cyran City—”
“They all pale in comparison to what I can achieve with that much power on my side.” Five minutes. I estimated she would be here then, perhaps sooner.
“Rupert, please. I’m your wife.” she pleaded, voice cracking with emotion. “Don’t you care about me, at least?”
My shoulders slumped. To an extent I suppose I did love Valeria. I had my pick of women but she stood out to me. Intelligent and beautiful, traits I liked in my partners. But none of them compared to the power and awesomeness of her.
“Of course I do.” Her face lit up with joy. Good, at least that was taken care of.
A whimper by my side caught my attention. Amber eyes flickered in my direction, buried beneath deep blue-black fur. My pet,one that never left my side, I’d nearly forgotten about him.
He moved closer to the edge of the roof, tail wagging at the sight of Sapphyra. He howled and whimpered for her. Though he flinched at my touch, I leaned down to scratch him behind the ears. A small growl erupted from his throat but it tempered down just as fast.
“I know, boy. I'm excited to see her too. Be patient, she's almost here.”
Sapph roared once more though this one was different from the others. It was not a roar of awesome might or ferocity. There was pain in her roar, as if she didn't want this.
“I understand, Sapphyra.” I spread my arms out wide, as if I could reach out and hug her from here. “You've been in that mortal shell for so long that this freedom must feel foreign to you. But you must keep going! Stretch out your destruction across the city and show them all who you are.”
The grin across my face was so wide that my lips nearly split clean down the middle.
“Come to me and show them who I've always known you to be; our Sovereign!”
Wyatt
(Minutes before Sapphyra wakes up)
It's happening again. I'm losing my wife, again.
We watched her change into her kaiju form, unbridled fury and rage poured out of her like sweat. Everything happened in slow motion. The ceiling collapsed as she tore through Beacon tower but somehow left the three of us alive.
I couldn't breathe.
Guy was saying something, but my ears were ringing. Noa was shaking my shoulders but there was no strength left in my body. I couldn't look at either of them.
I had failed her. For all of my plans, all of my bravado…it amounted to nothing. She overrode the safety measures I had in place.
How?
“WYATT!”
The ringing in my ears finally stopped, just for me to be deafened again by Guy screaming directly in my ear. I don't bother turning to him.
“What do you want?” Speaking feels foreign to me. My jaw doesn't seem to want to cooperate.
“I want you to wake the fuck up and help us bring her back to earth, for one. For two, I need you to listen closely to me.”
Guy huffed out some air and lifted my chin, forcing me to lock eyes with him.
“You were right.”
“Right about what?”
Guy grit his teeth and huffed again. This must be hard for him to speak on.
“You were right to try and save her. I might not agree with your methods but unlike the rest of us, you saw what was coming and you tried.”
I shrugged and reached up to adjust my glasses on autopilot, sad to feel an empty space where they once were.
First my glasses, now my wife.
“It didn't matter in the end. My plans and my promises—they didn't stop this. Now she doesn't even have the system as a failsafe to help her. The city will be destroyed and it will be my fault.”
I clench my fists, trembling with self loathing.
“She trusted me to protect her, even from herself. When she wakes up and sees all the damage she’s caused— ”
“You all sure do talk alot.” Zeke said, stepping off of the steps, arms behind his head at a 90 degree angle. He wore one of my old shirts and pants, they looked uncomfortably tight.
“You look like you’re one sneeze away from bustin’ loose.” Noa smirked, holding out his hand towards Zeke's head once he got close. Zeke growled at him but there was no bite to it. I was surprised he let Noa touch him at all, let alone rub his head.
“Shouldn’t you be worried about the dragon tearing through the city right now? Especially because she’s pregnant?”
I scowled at the boy. Leave to my bloodline to have loose lips.
Of course Noa had his suspicions no doubt from years of being in my head but just like me, he wasn’t going to say anything unless she did.
“I highly doubt she’s pregnant.” Guy snorted, cracking his neck.
Oh this poor sweet fool is in denial. I actually feel bad for him.
“Anyway, he’s right. We have to bring her back to her senses somehow.” Guy started floating above us.
“Have you not seen her? There’s no way we’ll be able to calm her down now, especially now that she hates me.”
“You’re sounding real pathetic there, brother.” Noa caught me by surprise. “All hope seemed lost the last time she monster’d out, right?”
“Yes, and the only reason she stopped then was due to her love for me. A love which I have apparently tainted.”
“Well then, it’s time for you to redeem yourself. Starting with that key you were talking about before.” Noa nudged me towards Barnaby’s tomb.
“Key?” Guy asked, “key to where?”
A small smile graced my lips as I pressed my palm against the bottom of Barnaby's bed. Beneath it, a tiny compartment opened up. Four translucent patches, no bigger than my thumb, presented themselves.
“What are those?” Zeke asked, scratching his head.
“These would be my key,” I glanced up at Guy, “my key to anywhere.”
“If I remember correctly, each of those patches gives you a dose of your old power for about 30 seconds at a time.” Noa softly added. I nodded and turned to the others.
“I could give each of you one, and for 30 seconds you could teleport anywhere you’ve ever been or ever seen…”
An idea hit me. I scrambled to put on a patch on the back of my neck.
“What?! Why are you using yours already?” Zeke and Guy asked in unison.
Noa facepalmed. “Because he has an idea and no time to explain it, right?”
“Wrong. I’m going to grab the dragonsbane I had hidden away from Sapph, and give her every dose we have.”
“Wyatt—” Guy growled, I knew he wanted to stop me.
“Sorry.” I mumbled. Vanishing before his super speed could catch me.
25 seconds.
I headed to the underground bunker, the ark, specifically our bedroom. Another compartment beneath our bed held ten charges of dragonsbane left. I gripped them and teleported directly onto Sapphyra’s face next. We were up so high, my ears popped and it felt like my lungs were going to collapse.
15 seconds
Her massive blue eye spotted me.
“Shit! Princess just wait—” Her tail stretched up and rolled over her snout, looking to sweep me up like a tidal wave. I teleported over it and into her eye. Now I’m fighting her closing eyelids. Why can nothing ever be easy for us?
10 seconds left.
“This should help, love.”
I twisted off the caps and splashed the solutions in her eye, hopping out just as she closed her eye.
5 seconds.
She roared in pain, like all I’d done was manage to piss her off even further. A feat I did not think I was capable of doing.
I teleported to the one place I knew she would go in that state: Cyran City Hall.
The moment I landed in the dragon Archive room, because of course I’m attracted to the room with the most knowledge, I knew I was in trouble. Not because I ran into Rupert or one of his cronies, no, I couldn’t be that lucky.
Of all the people in the universe I thought I’d run into? Barbie wasn’t it.
